Hey Sarah (sorry I hope I'm spelling that right)! I was wondering if you knew about getting the opportunity to insert a NG tube in nursing school. I never got the opportunity to do this in school and I'm starting my first RN job in a month. I'm a little worried about not having done this skill by myself. I have done a bunch of other skills (IVs, Foleys, Central Dressing change) but just never seemed to do a NG tube. Is something that's expected for a new graduate?
Hello :) During nursing school the only time I got to insert an NG tube was on a manikin and doing it on a manikin and on a real person are two different things. IVs, Foleys, and central dressing changes are way more common in the hospital setting than NG tubes (plus it depends on what type of floor you are working on....a GI floor is going to have tons of them...while a cardiac floor, maybe every once in a while), but yes, you may encounter them as a new grad. If it does happen I would ask some of the experienced nurses on your floor to assist you with it. When I first started out I had to access a subq port, and I asked for help from some of the other nurses who walked me through it. Remember you are not alone and our co-workers are really some of the best people in the world to help you. So, just always ask for help!
