  • Our survey of Planet 806.4616.0110 continues. What is the advanced species responsible for these electromagnetic transmissions?
    Parallax is a five-part series of video essays that wonders what an entry in Carl Sagan's Encyclopaedia Galactica might look like. What do we learn when we step outside of our myopic, planetary view and see life from a different perspective?
    Find out, in this survey of an alien world.

      @@AdamWestbrookArt I love how there's another race out there studying us. But I like most, is how these aliens focus on our species' potential.

    When I first visited the Shibuya section of Tokyo, I remember having this uncanny sensation that I was witnessing a sort of paradigm shift. In the same way that collections of unicellular organisms living close together in a symbiotic relationship eventually became a single multicellular organism, I thought I was seeing the beginnings of a shift where the human species changed from a collection of individuals living together to the parts of one gigantic social organism. It was a moment of high terror for me to think that the internet might be the beginnings of that thing waking up to its own form of consciousness.
    Anyway, what I'm trying to say is I don't think that lady was wrong to identify the paradigm form of what is "human" to be on the level of something larger like a corporation instead of the individual persons. Maybe when we make first contact with alien life, it won't be human organics talking to alien organics, but our cities talking to theirs.
    Great videos, by the way.

    Well done!
    But probably not all that accurate on how aliens would determine the "most popular language" on the planet.
    Yes, the order of actual speakers may be Chinese-Spanish-English, but that's merely by raw numbers of people born into it and speaking it as a first language. Since our aliens would presumably be savvy, and knowing that the languages would be mutually incompatible among the speakers, they would probably look at how many of the organisms went out of their way to learn another language as a 2nd language (for intercommunication), and they would clearly come to the conclusion that English is the most popular (total of 510 million learners vs. only 178 million Chinese and a mere 70 million Spanish)
    (reference, see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_total_number_of_speakers)

    • @AdamWestbrookArt
      @AdamWestbrookArt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! This is right, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's what the aliens realise. They only have our TV signals to base everything about us on and they might not be receiving all of it. Similarly aliens might not interpret information in the same way as us either (we can't assume alien "intelligence" works like human intelligence). It seems dumb to us to imagine waves mean the ocean is alive, but if you've only ever seen still water (or have seen a planet where the oceans are alive) then it's a more natural conclusion.

    • @tabbyheraclitus7835
      @tabbyheraclitus7835 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speculation is always fun :)
      As for TV signals, I'm not sure how that would pan out, but I have a hunch that the majority might have been in English up to at least the 1980s (largely due to the post war economic boom in US where everyone could afford a TV, leading to the largest wave of on-air production being in English).
      They might not manipulate info in the same way but it seems that since the laws of physics are cosmos-wide we could assume their intelligence would have to be able to interpret the same laws and solve the same problems we face, so that they'd have hit upon solutions not too unlike our own. After all, if they were able to decipher our "linear languages..." :)

  • @Myuroh
    @Myuroh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's a nice series of videos, but I was annoyed by the sentiment that carbon is not a good basis for life. It's an extraordinarily good basis for life. You can (or so I am told) do more complex chemistry with carbon than all other elements on the periodic table combined. There are scientists that spend their entire career just on carbon chemistry - they're called organic chemists. This is why you will sometimes hear scientists saying they detected organic molecules in space. They're not saying they found "life", they're actually saying they detected carbon-based molecules.
    The video also says water is not a good basis for life, which again is wrong. Water can dissolve lots of molecules important for life, which means it's a great way to transport nutrients and waste around a body and let molecules intermix with each other. Water also remains as a liquid over a large temperature range, which means life in water has a wider margin of error. Finally, water ice floats and is a good insulator, which means pools of water do not turn to solid ice, killing everything inside, which again increases life's margin of error.
    Having said all this, I appreciate the creative idea of the video - that it's about a life form we cannot even imagine commenting on the human existence. Even still I want to take this opportunity to show people how the more we learn about life, the less surprising it is that life exists. In fact one could suggest that life is almost inevitable where the conditions are right.
