Imo the price is just too expensive. If the reason for jacking up the price was to reduce demand of the product, that means the steel watch itself with a basic 40h movement, 50m WR just isn't worth that much. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater and I was ready to jump the boat on this release if the price was right.
Have you tried the Cubitus? I suspect not. My mind changed when I saw cubitus and tried it on. In two years from now, I know which one will be in more demand a waiting list - and it won’t be the 222
After checking both in person, I definitely prefer the gold version. Visually the gold one blends in my wrist much better than the steel one; and I love the heft of full gold.
Nice watch but three main problems for me: 1. 37mm is a bit too small for this style, at least for me. 2. No seconds hand. 3. $32,000 for a very simple steel watch. Around twice the original price of the Overseas when it came out.
I can’t imagine anyone who buys this watch wearing it to wash their hands let alone needing 100m water resistance! 😂 Also, this is the first time I appreciate a non dial matched date window. The splash of white looks great.
I really like this. I would love for this to be a way of getting into VC. Like you could buy this in order to get an overseas retrograde, and then an American 1921 or Cornes de Vache 1955. I hate that this will only be for certain people to buy and sell for $20k over retail.
Not a bad idea, but I think in reality things might be the other way around where you'll need to buy a Cornes de Vache to be in contention for a 222. ~Jamie
Vacheron Constantin 222: Is gold the real steal? Or is steel pure gold? Answer: The Vacheron Constantin 222 is a copy of Tissot Powermatic PRX only way over priced.
Great watch. More dial options will probably come, not sure if they will do the smaller size. Its shape lends to adding complications if they want to. It’s a great design.
There is no simple ultra thin three hand model in Overseas line to compare, but you need to pay a lot more in order to get a ultra thin Overseas. From this len, 222 Steel is good value
The gold is extreemely limited in production run ability. I am certain this in Steel will be a lot easier to keep up with orders and perhaps means the average buyer will get an allocation if they have the right wallet
$35k for a steel VC is insane. I hope it doesn't sell because of this. They're doing this as a value prop because you can't get an AP Royal Oak at retail. Same with the Nautilus. This is ridiculous. $17k they could have killed it with this gorgeous design. There's 1000 watches I would take over this if I had the budget.
I'm a VC fan, but this is just a tad too lazy/cynical. The real VC lovers are waiting for another Royal Chronometre, or at least another historiques, or a complete overhaul of the pretty dull Traditionelle/Patrimony watches, which have really lost their way in a some late 90's/early 00's doldrums.
I disagree. I think they have positioned it perfectly considering how scarce it will be and as a highly exclusive model, where there is no intention of making it available to anyone and everyone, having a higher price of entry mitigates the queue and elevates collector allure. Also it is a holy trinity integrated design priced on par with the jumbo/5711. So I think it is where it should be, especially considering how much the vintage models are going for $$$$ -Z
@@Timeandtidewatches i understand but I still think it's distasteful. Basically They're trying to capitalize on hype and exclusivity by jacking up the price. I don't think this watch will hold its value because they swung way too hard. Time will tell. For the record I think it's a beautiful design.
I'm a bit confused. If the original 222 had water resistance of 150m and the new one only has 50m, then what did they improve over the original? Or is this a remake that is *worse* than the original? If the remake is worse, isn't that embarrassing?
He was lying cuz no one was going to buy the gold version and wait for the steel one. Unfortunately they are both over priced by 25% in comparison with the market. I’m not sure why these companies are making their prices close to each other. It’s simple. If your product is not in the same demand, then sell it for cheaper!
Having seen both in person, they're very different. The sunburst and lacquer on an Overseas is very different to the powdery matte blue of the 222. There's also not an easy 1 for 1 size comparison. You probably wouldn't need both in the collection though. I agree with Zach that it would've been cool to see a grey dial on the steel 222 but the blue is pretty nice - like a nice pair of denim jeans kinda vibe. ~Jamie
I think Vacheron have absolutely nailed it. True to the original, and stunning....Interesting to see the historical ad, seems that Vacheron made the "Cubitus" back in 1977 with that square 222 model 46004/411
The finishing and delicacy of 222’s movement is on a whole different level than overseas’, and that’s why it is not priced as an entry level model for VC. Spec wise, sure 50 wr and 40hr pr a bit lame for a “sport”watch, but this one is more on the dress side due to the thinness and the look
True but I see this as playing in the legit sports field for someone with the right size wallet so the wr factor is an area they could lift in the future.
@@marcusflack1523yea i am fine with the 40hr pr because it is quick to set time without a seconds hand, but would be great if wr is 10bar (i just checked the original 222 had 120m WR so the remake should be able to make it to 100m at least, what a shame)
No thanks. I am better off wearing my 35mm GOLD PRX quartz which cost me less than 400 USD. The gold logo of this VC222 should have been in the center of the dial instead at the outer case.
I dunno, super cool looking, but the bracelet width and boxy case make it far to cuff like for my preferences. Very futuristic though and looks cool, just not for me.
Wow at complete opposite ends of the football field but yeah I see where you’re going with that. But one is worn by the water boy , the other by the coach.
I think only the hardcore collectors of Vacheron Constantin will be interested in a SS 222 at that price point. I would have preferred it come in a silver dial to match the SS material (like the gold 222 did), and maybe slightly less at $30k. 20% more than a 3-hander Overseas, not tied to the halo blue dial in any way, but still pay homage to the original 222 for that premium (albeit it inferior material and technology behind it).
The IWC ingénieur was considered madly expensive … and the steel 222 is 3 times the price but that’s ok? Oh it’s highly exclusive and part of the holy trinity…. 😂😂😂
The movement is just so lazy - I've a first gen Overseas, with a Chronometer rated GP-derived ultra thin automatic, only 1/2mm thicker overall, and 150m water resistance, 46 hrs power and a guilloche dial. This current VC movement is pedestrian to say the least.
Well the original PRX was from 1978, VC 222 1977. That being said, two very different price points and propositions though they have shared visual cues. -Z

It looks better in Gold. I'd be happy with either one, if I could afford it.
Yeah I agree in gold it’s simply perfection. But I would not kick the steel out of bed for sure.
Gold is Stunning. This is just Very Nice. To my eye.
I'd take this over a Cubitus any day of the week.
