    That positive/negative line of sight concept threw me back to your map drawing video streams. Really interesting idea to break down the dynamics of information in an encounter.
    Excellent video :)

    Thank you, sir! This combined with Darkness and Light really add a lot of atmosphere to an encounter. Simple elements become potentially deadly. Line of Sight and the different party members' ability to see shouldn't be ignored. I don't know but I think Sun Tzu probably used terrain and miniatures to do some tactical studies research ;)

    How I get around "tank and spank" is to fundamentally change the nature of movement, by making the little-used "5-foot step" more powerful. Assuming that you haven't otherwise "moved" yet as part of your other actions on your turn:
    Effects that grant you extra movement (such as the Chronocharm of the Horizon Walker) have no effect on your eligibility to take a “step”.
    The "step" can be up to half of your racial base land speed (round down to the next 5-foot increment, minimum 5 feet), minus any speed penalties, split up as you please before, after, or inside of (in the case of a full attack action) the other actions where you don't "move".
    If you move more than 5 feet in this way in your turn, you provoke AoOs after that 5 feet like any other kind of movement. However, you gain a deflection bonus to your AC against these AoOs equal to your Base Attack Bonus (BAB).
    All rules and effects which affect the original 5-foot step use the new distance for all calculations except for multiplying the distance of your step (which instead uses the original 5 feet). No effect which increases your step distance can cause it to exceed your full racial base land speed.
    This results in combats where the enemy will frequently attack and then take a "step" to get away from a PC before they can all crowd around, and will position initial engagement at 40-70 feet away so that the PCs have to take a double-move just to get into melee range. They'll use the "withdraw" action liberally to get behind cover.

    I would like to see a Room Design that shows non-typical line of sight scenarios so we can visualize and think outside of the box. It seems no matter how much line of sight areas I think of, the players just move back and forth from cover to cover. I think practice sketches in a notebook would help conceive these plans better. I struggle tremendously from making traditional line of sight combat that they easily avoid or exploit and remove the challenge altogether.

    It always annoyed me that fighting in D&D often turned into people walking up to one another and trading blows, or people standing away from each other exchanging arrows/bolts/fireballs. Making an encounter feel dynamic is one of the biggest challenges for any table top game, and I appreciate your addressing this topic as one piece of solving that puzzle.

    I kind of accidentally did this in a game I was running last year in the Fallout universe. The players were taking on a town occupied by a bunch of tech cultists to capture a key enemy agent, right, and the agent in question had a bodyguard in the form of a heavily cyberneticized gentleman with a big fuckoff laser rifle(like the old school ones, not the ones from 3 onwards). He put the fear of god in them, which being a tech cultist was close to literal seeing as how he worshiped the company which made his gun. He could pick them off from across the map and they couldn't do *shit*. It was a lot of fun seeing them figure out how to get at this guy, was good times.
    In the end, they figured out that if they just took out the rest of the cultists he would fall back to go get his charge and skedaddle since, you know, he might be a cultist but he's no dummy. So once he bolted, they cornered him and he presented much less of a threat after he was tackled by an angry tribal with a deathclaw gauntlet.

    Thank you hank!! Question. How would I show the players the threat without blasting them? I would I tell them that the lizard will spit and that the spittle is deadly so that they will at least consider that they should hide?

    • @opposumness3107
      @opposumness3107 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd like to know too. Maybe a 'test drive' in that it splatters a creature or a part of an object while the players are in line of sight (no pun intended) of it.
      Seeing the lizard engulf something, which then is utterly destroyed

    • @patrick.s3356
      @patrick.s3356 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First reply is a great idea. Showcase the danger at the start, like a grand entrance, describe just how deadly the opponent looks. Another idea is suggest to the players to roll wisdom or knowledge, and if they succeed the difficulty based on the rarity of the opponent (or maybe you can just tell them because a pc might naturally have history with the opponent type) than tell them that "you are aware that this creature spits a big glob of vicious acid venom that can melt a man in one hit." ...but maybe the pcs dont have this knowledge, in which case theyll have to find out the hard way ;)
