No an easy fix, but as long as the spud drain is level and not cross threaded, should seal very well. If it keeps giving you problems sell the house, lol

Now, I have to go exchange my stopper to an inch and half. What I got is half inch bigger for some reason.
@@alleggs5098 Probably some crazy amount. I had to go back and forth 4 times to get the correct size. The box say 1.5 inch but it's bigger. Don't know why the size is different than what the description says, but finally installed it.

Thanks for your good comment, this is something you may want to replace often especially if the tub is on the second floor because any leak could cause lots of water damage to the downstairs ceiling.
@@LadyKimberly1 I've seen a couple of videos where the replacement drain kit came with a gasket wrapped around the drain threads. Some recommended removing it and using it as a shoe washer, others used it in lieu of plumber's putty. So hard to find consistency between all of the videos.
My 2 cents: I’ve thought a lot about it and I don’t think water can physically get past the rubber washer between the tub and the drain flange with the two pressed tight together. As a matter of fact there should be a smooth surface for the rubber washer to touch the tub for good seal, and Inside the tub is guaranteed to be smooth as you clean it and inside the tub is very smooth by manufacture. On the contrary, Underneath the tub might not be so smooth and we cannot see there. Hard to clean that surface UNDER the tub. Could be dirty under there-which if so, would make the rubber gasket not seal well.

I wish the plumber who roughed in our tub when the house was built (looks like the same fiberglass tub, in fact) had positioned the shoe correctly so the shoe gasket worked. I pulled the old cruddy drain out yesterday to find that its skewed quite a bit so they had to glob silicone adhesive on to fill the gap created
The drain SHOE gasket is placed UNDER the tub between the tub & drain pipe flange. Use a wire brush or your roommates toothbrush to clean all exposed pipe threads. Thanks for watching.

Well, you can place a rubber gasket also between the drain and the TUB..sometimes that's a good fix, sometimes plumbers putty is better and provides a better 'seat' or seal.
@@kaycee3v16 Use a plumbers gasket or putty that is recommended, glue may become a permanent solution but hamper taking the drain apart to clean, remove hair, or replace parts. The drain should remain easy 2 remove to replace new parts when the need arises.
If you are just a homeowner doing this, just throw that tub of putty you have left in the trash because by the time you need it again it will be a rock. I really wish they would sell that stuff in homeowner sized quantities.
Lookup TUBSHROOM a filter used to trap hair and keep it from clogging your bath tub drain..available at home depot & Amazon. About $12.+ Could save you lots of time and trouble having to cleanout your tub drain clog. Have seen this tubshroom item at CVS recently.

Your bath tub drain pipe does not have a flange so placing the shoe under the tub is not effective. I imagine the wrong pipe was used during the tub installation. I would place the shoe on the tub (instead of underneath.). It will hopefully work better than putty.
If the drain pipe did not hav a flange, the gasket or shoe would have just slid down the pipe. but Not 2 worry, this property was sold. Must a slow Friday night to be commenting on plumbing videos.
when I'm installing the new spud, how tight is tight enough? I don't want to over torque and break it, but also don't want to have it too lose and water get under the tub. I tightened mine until the plumber's putty oozed out the sides, then kept going until the screwdriver i was using to turn the installation tool started to bend slightly. Did I do it right?
The Lowmein, you may have tightened it a bit too tight..too much putty may have oozed out. You may want to redo / replace the putty, start over. Just be sure to not cross thread the spud. It's sumtimes helpful to turn the spud counter clockwise to line up the threads then proceed to tighten / turn clockwise. You saved yourself lots of money by doing it yourself. Be proud !!
Not sure of exact name, tub drain or spud remover.tool . available at Hm Depot .. You Can also use an opened ended wrench, put it inside the drain spud cross bar, then spin it out using a screw driver inserted into the closed round wrench opposite end. Much success, save money, DIY
Can you install a steel mesh basket under the drain so that it is permanent? As opposed to just laying it on top and risking a child walking off with it. Thanks
Training a child to not damage or walk off with items is a difficult task. Keeping hair out of the drain to keep it from clogging can be challenging.. I do not recommend raising other people's children / step kids. Clearly your problem is not so much clearing a clogged drian, as much as the proper training of tiny thieves with sticky fingers. I've noticed that sum children are destined for life as an inmate no matter what obstacles parents place in their way.

Old drain is missing a stopper on a condo my kid just moved it. I am thinking of replacing with a new drain plug since I cannot find a stopper that will fit the old plug.
How do I know when to stop twisting it in? I’m using the pliers to twist it and it keeps turning but I worrying about over tightening. And it seems like a lot of the plumbers putty has squeezed out. I tested and no leaks (and see in basement) but the water pools around the the edge of the drain and the tub. Does that mean it’s not all the way tightened yet?
By now you may have realized that the spud / drain is flush with the bottom of the tub floor. You want the drain lip close to parallel with the tub floor. You can always start over. Sum putty is going to squeeze out. Water pooling around the drain sounds normal..you can also use a rubber gasket under the tub drain spud lip instead of putty. Be sure not 2 cross thread.

I think my problem is that the underside of the tub where the washer would seal against has a lip on half of it. So I continue to work on it.
steve diprinzio, tape is not necessary. Any leak will occur due to a leaky gasket, they expand and rot then leak. Putty or another gasket under the spud is fine whatever works 4 you...thank you
Talk to the reps at the hardware store, tub drain pipes are usually the same diameter, the shoe washer gasket is made to fit the pipe drain. The pop-up may take another size gasket for example. Change out the overflow gasket at the same time. Take it apart, take it all to the hardware store to find the correct parts. Good luck
At around 7:50 it looks like the gasket is put around the bottom piping. This is not right, right? The gasket should stay on top of the bottom piping and held in place by the drain plug when we screw it in. Isn't it? Thanks.
You can also use a rubber gasket under the drain spud, i used putty..but no..a gasket must go under the tub. You have to 1st fish out the old gasket, then replace it with a new gasket. Any plumbing guy at HD can also explain it to you next time you go back to HD or Lowes. Since you cannot see it, you must feel below the tub thru the drain and get the old one out just like I did. Good luck, follow the process.

I explained this b4, you need gaskets in both places. The waste pipe that is unseen hidden under the tub has to have a flange becuz thats how it compresses the spud together between the tub. The spud is a common name for the drain piece that is easily replaced by a homeowner. Using putty or another gasket is your choice. So two gaskets are needed or 1 shoe gasket and putty. Savvy ?
Can anyone actually explain why that washer can’t seal just as good on either side of the tub? I put mine right on top of the tub under the drain screw. You’re squeezing the gasket tight between the tub and shoe or the tub and drain screw either way. The science of it if there is any would be nice
Not sure, I think the nub, it can cross thread and become off center a bit. Starting the rotation backward counter clock wise seems to line up the start of the threads...once it clicks rotate clockwise.

I hope we also have that lower rubber gasket, ha, I'm having an issue where the "o ring" metal ring is loose so you can actually pull on it and see the upper rubber gasket (not the lower one you and I were discussing above). My comment earlier was when I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on. I haven't removed the drain flange/fitting. I recently discovered our guest bathroom tub drain has a very loose metal "lip" to the point that you can pull it up and see the upper rubber gasket (I guess a lot of people use plumbers putty there instead of a gasket, but this has a gasket there and, presumably, in the spot we were discussing earlier). Anyway, I was hoping it wouldn't be a concern that that metal ring is so loose, as long as both rubber gaskets are snug, but based on the research I've been doing, that seems to be an issue! Thanks for the info, and any advice about that loose/bent upper part having "give" would be appreciated!
@@InstazomeASMR the spud drain should not be loose at all. Maybe replace it. Remove the spud, then feel below the drain for the old gasket, remove it, then replace it with a new gasket. But fer sure a gasket goes under the tub, that's is the principle fix objective.

everbrite tub drain instrux say to fill tub w h 2 0 immediately to test drain. some plumber putty mfgrs says wait 2 days before using tub. tho you can use a sink etc immeidately. . which is correct ? all i know is, a 'professional plumber' installed the everbrite drain kit, then filled tub w h 2 0and it did not leak on install day . then 6 months later tub drain was leaking every time someone took a bath OR used the shower.... what a mess.
Yes the leaks cause lots of damage to ceilings, and basements below the tub.. sometimes a rubber gasket is a better solution. If you can cut an access panel on the opposite side of the tub valve wall. You can inspect the hidden drain pipe beneath the tub. Then install a door there as a permanent inspection access. They sell these common access doors at HD, Lowes. 12 X 12 inch or bigger doors.
Sure, read the putty instructions.. makes sense, try not to step on the drain when taking a shower, that compression weakens the putty, makes it squeeze out.
I just replaced the drain yesterday. There was no putty under the old drain, there was just a deteriorated gasket. The new drain has a rubber gasket, but the one you are inserting doesn't. Did you remove the gasket and just use putty? I ran water after replacing it and didn't see any leaks, but this morning my wife sent me a message when I got to work. She said she heard dripping so I have to check it out when I get home. Should I have discarded the gasket and used putty or used putty as well as the gasket?
Reuben Hubert, did you replace the gasket UNDER THE TUB? I did not use the rubber gasket that came with the drain pop up becuz I get a better seal with putty. I can tighten the assembly down a bit tighter using putty. and that means the SHOE washer UNDER the tub is also tighter and creates a much better seal for me. al
I did replace the one under and the overflow gasket. When I got home to check it out the drip wasn't coming from the drain at all. I cut out some more drywall and found the drip coming from a failed CPVC joint. So another trip to the store for pipes and fittings and now it looks like problem solved. [First somebody said that the leak was probably from a bad tub valve, but after cutting a hole in the drywall (the laundry room is behind the bathroom, so it was easy to get behind the tub) we saw the valve was OK. It looked like the leak might have been coming from under the toilet so I replaced the wax ring and bolts, but after the leak persisted I peeled up a floor tile and saw that the water came from under the tub. That's when I replaced the gaskets (the guy who said it was the tub valve told me he would have to raise the tub to get to the drain. I went into the laundry room and cut a hole at floor level to get to it) Now I'm getting a piece of plywood, putting a coat of stain on it, and screwing it to the wall to cover the hole and allow easy access in the future.]
lots of things can cause a leak under the tub, i cut a hole on the opposite wall to make sure the our tub drain was o.k. easy to patch the hole, texture and paint. Good job !
The opening I ended up with is bigger than that. It's 15" x 35". I'll cut a piece of plywood or underlayment and stain it. It's only going to be seen in the laundry room.
Yup plumbing ain't easy or pretty, must be slow Saturday nite at your place 2 be watching plumbing videos. I'm happy to have saved hundreds of dollars in repairs over the years.
What a job to replace pipe under tub.Didn’t want to remove toilet to get in trap door. Brother in law did 27 years ago.Also didn’t want to cut out kitchen ceiling.He built Sheetrock then paneling then trimmed like a door.Had to carefully remove trim then paneling then Sheetrock then remove old drain from tub then leaking drain pipe.What a day
@John Kramer if the drain pipe under the tub has a wide flange then a rubber gasket should also be placed under the tub to provide a patent water tight seal
Jeez--this guy is too slow. Did not explain how the shoe gasket goes on under the tub. Did not mention a spanner works to take off the base of the drain instead of a special tool... But still a helpful video if you have plenty of time!

When I do mine, I like to wrap some teflon tape on the threads as well. Nice video.

Spinning it slowly backwards a few times like he said helps a lot with that.

I just used a screw driver to push down on the drain pipe, then felt below for the gasket under the tub.
I used the grips of a pair of channel lock pliers. 👍

Well the tool should fit inside the drain very well as long as the drain has the cross bars intact, sumtimes the metal rots away.

Change out the overflow gasket at the same time. Take it apart, take it all to the hardware store to find the correct parts. Good luck

Not sure, may be a late response but some times the drain needs to be cut out. If you can do it carefully without damaging the female threads.

At around 7:50 it looks like the gasket is put around the bottom piping. This is not right, right?
The gasket should stay on top of the bottom piping and held in place by the drain plug when we screw it in. Isn't it?

You can also use a rubber gasket under the drain spud, i used putty..but no..a gasket must go under the tub. You have to 1st fish out the old gasket, then replace it with a new gasket. Any plumbing guy at HD can also explain it to you next time you go back to HD or Lowes. Since you cannot see it, you must feel below the tub thru the drain and get the old one out just like I did. Good luck, follow the process.

If the tub drain pipe does not have a flange, the gasket should be placed between the new shoe and the tub (instead of underneath), and the plumber's putty is not necessary!
I explained this b4, you need gaskets in both places. The waste pipe that is unseen hidden under the tub has to have a flange becuz thats how it compresses the spud together between the tub.
The spud is a common name for the drain piece that is easily replaced by a homeowner.
Using putty or another gasket is your choice. So two gaskets are needed or 1 shoe gasket and putty. Savvy ?

Take it apart and take a look & see, have the shoe gasket, putty and things you need available when you get in there.
Can anyone actually explain why that washer can’t seal just as good on either side of the tub? I put mine right on top of the tub under the drain screw. You’re squeezing the gasket tight between the tub and shoe or the tub and drain screw either way. The science of it if there is any would be nice
Not sure, I think the nub, it can cross thread and become off center a bit. Starting the rotation backward counter clock wise seems to line up the start of the threads...once it clicks rotate clockwise.
I don’t think water can physically get past the rubber washer between the tub and the drain flange with the two pressed tight together. As a matter of fact there should be a smooth surface for the rubber washer to touch the tub for good seal, and Inside the tub is guarantee to be smooth as you clean it and inside the tub is very smooth by manufacture. Underneath the tub might not be so smooth and we cannot see there. Could be dirty under there.
Weird, my rubber gasket is not tucked inside like that, it's just directly below the "metal lip" at the top of the drain flange/fitting
There's another rubber gasket under the tub, that goes there... That you cannot see. Pay close attention to what is being shown.

I hope we also have that lower rubber gasket, ha, I'm having an issue where the "o ring" metal ring is loose so you can actually pull on it and see the upper rubber gasket (not the lower one you and I were discussing above). My comment earlier was when I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on.
I haven't removed the drain flange/fitting. I recently discovered our guest bathroom tub drain has a very loose metal "lip" to the point that you can pull it up and see the upper rubber gasket (I guess a lot of people use plumbers putty there instead of a gasket, but this has a gasket there and, presumably, in the spot we were discussing earlier).
Anyway, I was hoping it wouldn't be a concern that that metal ring is so loose, as long as both rubber gaskets are snug, but based on the research I've been doing, that seems to be an issue! Thanks for the info, and any advice about that loose/bent upper part having "give" would be appreciated!
@@InstazomeASMR the spud drain should not be loose at all. Maybe replace it. Remove the spud, then feel below the drain for the old gasket, remove it, then replace it with a new gasket.
But fer sure a gasket goes under the tub, that's is the principle fix objective.

everbrite tub drain instrux say to fill tub w h 2 0 immediately to test drain. some plumber putty mfgrs says wait 2 days before using tub. tho you can use a sink etc immeidately. . which is correct ? all i know is, a 'professional plumber' installed the everbrite drain kit, then filled tub w h 2 0and it did not leak on install day . then 6 months later tub drain was leaking every time someone took a bath OR used the shower.... what a mess.
Yes the leaks cause lots of damage to ceilings, and basements below the tub.. sometimes a rubber gasket is a better solution. If you can cut an access panel on the opposite side of the tub valve wall. You can inspect the hidden drain pipe beneath the tub. Then install a door there as a permanent inspection access. They sell these common access doors at HD, Lowes. 12 X 12 inch or bigger doors.
Sure, read the putty instructions.. makes sense, try not to step on the drain when taking a shower, that compression weakens the putty, makes it squeeze out.
I just replaced the drain yesterday.
There was no putty under the old drain, there was just a deteriorated gasket.
The new drain has a rubber gasket, but the one you are inserting doesn't.
Did you remove the gasket and just use putty?
I ran water after replacing it and didn't see any leaks, but this morning my wife sent me a message when I got to work.
She said she heard dripping so I have to check it out when I get home.
Should I have discarded the gasket and used putty or used putty as well as the gasket?
Reuben Hubert, did you replace the gasket UNDER THE TUB? I did not use the rubber gasket that came with the drain pop up becuz I get a better seal with putty. I can tighten the assembly down a bit tighter using putty. and that means the SHOE washer UNDER the tub is also tighter and creates a much better seal for me. al
I did replace the one under and the overflow gasket.
When I got home to check it out the drip wasn't coming from the drain at all.
I cut out some more drywall and found the drip coming from a failed CPVC joint.
So another trip to the store for pipes and fittings and now it looks like problem solved.
[First somebody said that the leak was probably from a bad tub valve, but after cutting a hole in the drywall (the laundry room is behind the bathroom, so it was easy to get behind the tub) we saw the valve was OK. It looked like the leak might have been coming from under the toilet so I replaced the wax ring and bolts, but after the leak persisted I peeled up a floor tile and saw that the water came from under the tub. That's when I replaced the gaskets (the guy who said it was the tub valve told me he would have to raise the tub to get to the drain. I went into the laundry room and cut a hole at floor level to get to it) Now I'm getting a piece of plywood, putting a coat of stain on it, and screwing it to the wall to cover the hole and allow easy access in the future.]
lots of things can cause a leak under the tub, i cut a hole on the opposite wall to make sure the our tub drain was o.k. easy to patch the hole, texture and paint. Good job !
the hardware stores sell a pre-fab door about 18" inches square to fit between the studs, to allow easy future access to any pipes located there.
The opening I ended up with is bigger than that. It's 15" x 35".
I'll cut a piece of plywood or underlayment and stain it.
It's only going to be seen in the laundry room.

Yup plumbing ain't easy or pretty, must be slow Saturday nite at your place 2 be watching plumbing videos. I'm happy to have saved hundreds of dollars in repairs over the years.

What a job to replace pipe under tub.Didn’t want to remove toilet to get in trap door. Brother in law did 27 years ago.Also didn’t want to cut out kitchen ceiling.He built Sheetrock then paneling then trimmed like a door.Had to carefully remove trim then paneling then Sheetrock then remove old drain from tub then leaking drain pipe.What a day

@John Kramer if the drain pipe under the tub has a wide flange then a rubber gasket should also be placed under the tub to provide a patent water tight seal
