    I have raised Rhodesin Ridgebacks for over 30 years. And I can absolutely contest that they are they are the greatest breed of dog in the world. I love Ridgebacks.

      Mine was about average which means about 3 weeks before total success. She had a hard time wanting to go out for potty when it was raining. Out of frustration (as I knew she knew she was supposed to go outside) the last time she pooped in the house I bagged it up and placed it next to her breakfast. That tricked worked and the house is now poop free.

      Ridgey Didge I'm a novice dog owner and I plan on getting one and I have a few questions. Every list says that they are stubborn and hard to teach, is that true? I'm a highschooler so I won't be home all day is that also fine? And which one is better for someone like me, a German shepherd or a ridgeback? Thanks in advance =)

    I had a ridgeback from 6months, from the RSPCA, until she died 11yrs later. Abit of pitbull & mastiff in her blood too, but she basically looked like a muscular ridgeback. Saved my life from a home invasion once. Best of the 4 dogs i ever owned.

      Actually the mutts make for the best. nature takes the best of the breeds that are mixed. Unfortunately cannot say that for humans that are mutts.

    Absolutely love my ridgeback, he loyal to the end and as soft as the come, unless he senses my angst, he will protect my family from anything. He a complete athlete and loves the outdoors. With a little bit of training and a lot of good social interaction they really are a perfect pack member. Leo looks like a fabulous dog, just like mine, always has a curious expression on his face analysing everything.

    I'm from Zimbabwe back then was known as Rhodesia. We had a Ridgeback for close to 18 years. Loyal, well behaved, very intelligent could cross a busy street on its own.
    Once our dog was stolen and taken 20kms away from our home and some how found his way back home, so shows how smart they are.
    They get along well with strangers, cats and if we'll taken care of will provide a great companion

    Our puppy seems to be a German Shepherd/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. We got her from a shelter and she's amazing. So smart, sweet, obedient and athletic. We walk her three times a day and give her lots of play and attention. My wife was dead-set against a dog before we got her (at my insistence), but our sweet Sunshine has melted all those objections away.
    Your Leo (appropriate name!) is gorgeous, by the way.

    My Lola is 17 years old. Best dog I've ever had. Ridgies are terribly sensitive and astute as it gets. We've been in the forests of So. Oregon and No. California her entire life and she's done great out here. Even with other critters she's got a way. Only regret I've got is we don't have another 17. It's been a real pleasure.

      Mine had a very prominent marking. I wish I had taken more pictures before he passed away. He was actually older than I was (I was 11 and he was 13, very old for a ridgeback) his name was rowdy and he was the most loyal dog I’ve ever had the privilege to call mine. He knew boundaries and when to be goofy and when to be serious, I ran with him around my grandmas pasture to get him some excessive which is what I think made him to live so long.

    I own a Ridgeback. He is now ten years old and still going well. I totally agree with the video. However, I do not recommend a ridgeback for first time dog owners. Ridgebacks are hounds and hounds are bread to be leaders. Ridgebacks like Bloodhounds tell you where to go to find the prey. This means that it takes time and commitment to fully train them but once they are trained you will have the best possible dog (actually friend) there is. They are really exceptional dogs. I feel privilege on having the experience of sharing my life with my Ridgeback.

  • @julieknight196
    @julieknight196 8 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    I'm on my first RR and they are not a breed for everyone. Intelligent but obstinate as they have to be able to think for themselves while out in the field. Training is something that shouldn't ever be forced with this breed but rather encouraged through positive reinforcement. I can teach my herders (corgi, Auzzies, healers) in 10 min what takes 1 week for a Rhodie. But the Rhodie will study a door and watch someone open it and will learn how to open the door from that. Herders look at a closed door and think, "guess I should stay here." They are rather cat smart. My RR adores children but they are so big and strong that it's easy for them to knock over a little one. Exercise is a high must. We go from 3 to 12 miles up and down steep hills every day. They do shed, anything with hair will do that but their shed out is easy to deal with. They are extremely affectionate and love to snuggle in spite of their size. My Rhodie does not like cold weather or cold water, she's a sissy dog when it comes to that and wears rain coats and heavy blankets. I decided on a RR because I hike a lot where there are mountain lions. She did her first "tree" when she was 8 months old. We've gone through obedience classes and one rattlesnake adversion class. I love my girl and would love to include another when the time is right.

      Wow! This comment was soooo helpful! Thank you!

    • @MakeWay4CJ
      @MakeWay4CJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am completely confused by this comment. Let me explain.
      I'm assuming that when you say "adopt one" that you mean that they should adopt one from an animal shelter or a rescue. However, the dogs at animal shelters are rescues and are usually dogs that have been abandoned or are mistreated - which means that their temperament is going to be drastically different from the temperament of their breed and it also makes them more difficult to raise. Therefore if somebody went to a rescue and adopted a RR then s/he would not only be harder for them to deal with but the new owner wouldn't even have a reliable source of reference on how to properly take care of him/her behave because that dog is not going to act like a true RR. That would be a nightmare! You get what I'm saying?
      At the same time I understand your concern about allowing a new pet owner to walk away with an RR so if I were breeder (an established breeder) I might consider making a stipulation that if a new owner wanted to purchase a RR that they would have to get trained in how to raise Ridgebacks or have raised a similar dog from a puppy to adulthood first. Now granted there is probably very few (if any) training programs of this kind but at the same time, have you ever thought about using this as an opportunity to start training new owners on how to raise RR's? Or maybe a series of videos that touch upon different topics on how to raise them? Not only would that be helpful to the dogs but it would also generate an extra source of income. That sounds like a win-win. Just a thought.

      Makeway for cj i just found this comment underneath this video :) about adopting
      Leo is absolutely gorgeous! I happened to come across a Ridgie years ago at my local shelter. I was leery of him initially as he was so quiet and guarded. I felt bad for him because he had been returned twice to the shelter (through no fault of his own.) I can confidently say he was one of the best dogs I've ever had. He was THE perfect dog. Protector, clown, cuddle boy, knew when you were sad/depressed and needed cheering up. I just adored him and he adored us. I used to get onto my youngest son when he wanted to lay on Jake ALL THE DAMN TIME! I would say "Will you please leave that poor dog alone?" But then Jakey would get up and go lay by my son. LOL He was incredibly tolerant! He's been gone now about three years. My Sweet Jake just got old and his body was worn out. I can't wait one day to see him at the Rainbow Bridge some day!

My vet is concerned about all the junk dog food companies are putting in the food. The vet said he thinks the cancer rate in pets has gone up from what he seen. My vet has been around for 40 years and pretty experienced.

      Sorry for the Delay. Both Leo and our Doberman are on Science Diet for large breeds. Been through several brands till we found the right fit for them both. Make sure you pick a brand that doesn't switch ingredients based on the fluctuation in commodity price of the grains. We are very careful with treats....avoid anything made in China or too many "additives."

    My Ridgeback Lazlo, was definitely the best 30 dollars I've ever spent. Got him at a year old from a shelter and he was a biter, so training him was probably the toughest thing I've even done, but he's turned out to be the best dog I could ask for. Incredibly loyal, he follows me EVERYWHERE, and he's great with children and other dogs. One thing to look out for in a Ridgeback is that they are VERY stubborn dogs. They can be as obedient as you can get them but the moment food, dogs, or people are in the picture, be ready for them to charge after those. A very loyal breed, I'll be a ridgeback owner for the rest of my life!

    Great breed. I have a 9 month old RR.He is so loving, but needs to be with me. So if you want one, make sure you are retired or have a lot of free time.
    No need to train him off the lead, he's always looking for us and will follow. He will do anything we want, however squirrels and chasing food off the kitchen counter are another story!
    Everyone comments on him being beautiful and gentle. The video made me laugh because RR will wonder why they are being made to sit? But they will do it.......eventually......
    I've always had Labradors or Retrievers but theres no way I would go back. I was braced for puppy chaos but he immediately knew how to be toilet trained (we had one mistake from 8 weeks) and never destroyed his toys. This dog is loyal & instinctive. He has changed everything.

      Great idea Jonathan. Supporting your local rescue organizations are a great way to make a difference in your community. The are rescue organizations for many breeds and the best way to find the local Ridgeback rescue organization in the US and Canada is at: www.ridgebackrescue.org. If you are getting a pup from a breeder make sure you do your homework and check out the reputation and ethics of the breeder. Avoid puppy mills as they are not only bad for the dogs but also for the breed.

      Leo lives in a hot climate, not sure about a tropical climate - still, they have short coats and tolerate heat - maybe in-country breeders could advise?

      I live in Oudtshoorn, South Africa and have 6 ridgebacks on our farm. We regularly experience 40-45 c in Oudtshoorn but as long as they have a bowl of clean, cool water available they appear perfectly fine. Another good thing to know is that they are immune to most insect bites. Also, because they are hounds, they will chase so keep your yard well fenced and train your dog to obey basic commands before letting him off the leash when off your property. They do take time to train but once its in it sticks. They can be lazy but a small alert dog such as a fox terrier or skipperche make a great companion when you need them to guard something. Remember they are hunters, not guards and a little yapper to act as an alarm works wonders

    I had one 12 years and they are not a dog for many owners. they are a working and protecting hound with a lot of physical energy and are intelligent. They need leadership and attention to their care. Most owners are not willing to do that or to even take their dog through one obedience class. I handled dogs in and out of rescue for 25 years and 3 of my own through CGC certification. Get an easy to care for smaller dog and don't fall in the 'he's so handsome' trap if you are like 90% .

    our staffordshire terrier female was in heat so she was locked in her pen. 8 weeks ago we woke up to find our neighbors Rhodesian Ridgeback in the pen with her. now we have 6 half ST half RR pups. I must say they are very good looking. a couple have wgite on them. 4 have the ridge, 2 don't. The 2 that don't are solid brown and look just like a RR. Probably going to keep one of the males.

    Stars, but I love the Ridgeback! One of the few things that make me want to not be in a wheelchair is my lack of dog exercising abilities. I'd have a Ridgeback were I able to properly care for a dog. They're the best in the world!

    I need a dog I can bring on long hikes with me. However, I live in an apartment. I want a dog I can train and spends loads of time with and will be protective of me but not one who will freak out and bite everybody. I'm a small person. I'm 4'10 and I only weigh about 115. I'm not sure what kind of dog to get. I've never owned a dog either. I also want a dog that won't topple over my nieces and nephew. Any suggestions?

    The only Ridgeback I've encountered was one tough dog and with an idiot owner. He was extremely hyper and bumped into people (me included) in the dog park while chasing other dogs. At some point, he managed to break some teenager's leg doing so.
    He wasn't violent, just extremely rough for other dogs and humans to handle.

    • @carolineedmistoncooki3fair631
      @carolineedmistoncooki3fair631 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ridgebacks are very easy to train. Super smart dogs, they respond best to positive reinforcement, harsh training will not work. They are hounds, not retrievers, very different, but in my very biased opinion, the best breed.

    Stuart, what do you feed Leo ? Do RR's thrive on any particular kind of diet/protein source ? (kibble vs raw , etc...). Do they like raw meaty bones like those big knuckle bones ? Also, what do good RR breeders usually charge for pups ? btw he's a good looking boy !

    • @Jammil2477
      @Jammil2477 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mitch Cumstein in the UK ridgeback range from between £500-£2000 depending on breeders, quality and demand.
      I've always fed mine on the raw diet, it has worked perfectly for him. He has about 1 1/2 hours exercise free running every day with the odd day off a week or fortnight.
      Keep his mind active and his body too, it ensures they'll be less prone and o destruction in the home.
      Im lucky, I got an amazing one. He's sat here with his head on my lap after eating his dinner. No dog better on the planet. Great companion and he gives me a lot more than I could ever have asked.

    • @robertspies4695
      @robertspies4695 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Variable but around $2200 for a ridgeback and about half for a ridgeless pup. I feed mine a stew of cooked ground pork, potatoes, carrots and broccoli morning and night and a bit of dry food at noon. I make up the stew once a week and refridgerate in small cups. MIcrowave about a cup or a bit more for 45 sec. They love bones too as an occasional treat.

    Two -probably very stupid- questions from an owner candidate :
    1. I'm voting for Weimaraner and my girlfriend wants a Ridgeback. Can they live together and/or which one would you suggest and why?
    2. I'll be spending time both hunting and fishing (blue water). Which one would suit better for around 30 C temperatures...
    Incredibly beautiful dog by the way. You sure must be a proud owner!
