Striking Gold Landscape Photography Scottish Highlands

  • In this video, I strike gold twice while searching for subjects to photograph in and around the Glencoe area of the Scottish Highlands.
Last week I hosted one of my many workshops at Glencoe. As always during my workshops, I always add on extra time to venture out in search of new locations to photograph.
In terms of search and reward, this was one of my finest trips in a long time. I struck gold not only once but twice!
Striking gold to a Landscape Photographer in case you were wondering is when you happen onto a location that not only looks amazing but has plenty to go at in terms of composition opportunities.
    Hope you enjoy the video
    Gary

I am not a photo "purist" by any stretch of the imagination. But yanking ferns that were there before you is not a bit of housekeeping. Take them off in post or work the camera into a different position. You do NOT kill part of the landscape you are photographing, regardless of how much longer they have to live. What's next, chop down a dead tree that gets in the way? Heck, its already dead so what difference does it make? I'm a big fan of your videos and will continue to watch them, but today I am stopping at the 7:55 mark. Sorry.

Was in Glencoe from 23-26 Sep with Mike Jenkinson from Batley Camera Club!! Wet & windy! Only one half-decent sunrise over Rannoch Moor and no sunsets worth capturing. Deleted half of my images due to raindrops on the lens!! Spent a few evenings in the Clachaig Inn to drown my sorrows! I'll be off again in Jan/Feb if the wife lets me!

I do my fair share of 'housekeeping' Here in the USA you have to be kind of careful to know where you can housekeep and where you can't. Lots and lots of public lands you could end up with penalities - in Minnesota, USA alone we have National Parks, State Parks, National Wildlife Areas, Scientific Natural Areas, Water fowl management areas, Water Management Areas (and those are the one I think think of off the top of my head) - none of which allow housekeeping (or drones for that matter). Interestingly in Water Management areas you can pan for gold as long as you leave the water like you found it
Country Parks, private lands, and simple non-designated public owned lands (like Bureau of Land Management lands) are all ok for housekeeping.
It is a confusing mess of regulations.

I just got back from a ten day hiking trip to Scotland. I think I took more great photos in 10 days than in my last 71 years. Stunning, awesome scenery everywhere you turn. Glencoe, Balquhidder, Balmoral, Skye, Glennfinnan and all points in between, absolutely gorgeous. Photographers paradise? More like photographers nightmare! Sensory overload! SO much to see and appreciate. At least two weeks, next time. Once isn’t enough.

Gary, wow, wow and wow. What beautiful photos of that waterfall. Also the pictures of the lake. It remains and is a pleasure to watch your videos. They are educational and your light-hearted way of presenting makes it fascinating. On to the next video and expect an invite for the weekend.

Great video again Gary. I know this area well as I live close to Glencoe and that waterfall is a stunner! After watching this I’m itching to get back there with my camera. That house always catches my eye when driving past. Such a glorious place to live with an ever changing view.
