One of the main things that helped the Giants' improvement from the 1983 to the 1984 season was that Phil Simms was first of all able to play a full season. Second, he had more depth at receiver with those receivers having more big play ability and explosiveness than they had in '83. In 1983 he had just Earnest Gray, a solid possession receiver in his own right, but in '84 he had rookies Lionel Manuel and Bobby Johnson, a revitalized Zeke Mowatt at tight end, and Byron Williams who took a back seat to Gray in '83 but who stepped up more in '84.

Was stationed at Fort Ord CA and watching this team. I knew they would get better at that point.

Wow. Fort Ord was a army base back then that was shut down after the Cold War was over. Now it's a university. I some times drive on hwy 1 going to Monterey. I salute you for serving our country. I was a very young teen that 1984 season and my team was SF. 1984 49ers was the season for them after they lost in 1983 NFC Champship vs Washington on a bad call on Eric Wright. 1984 was a great season for the NFL. Hi Mike are you still living in California?

@@edgarteran1894 No I went back home in late 1985. It was sad to see what's left of that place when I went back last year. Thanks for the salute. A long time has passed, almost 40 years and that was real football played back then, unlike today's Hollywood, scripted outcomes. All fake.

@@uy7munir Pretty much taken over by commies, sadly, it's not the country my family fought for.

They would soon be great. This was a year to build on. And build they did.

No penalty on LT against the Rams, it was a clean play by him.

The fact that LT’s referred to as a living legend in his FOURTH SEASON, though...

Even when he retired he still was better than 1/2 the linebackers around.

Yup, he redefined defensive football. Arguably the greatest defensive player of all time, certainly in the Top 5 of best PLAYERS of all time. And yes, obviously the best Giant of all time.

In his 6th season Phil Simms finally played well but he and his family are way jealous of Eli Manning still after all these years let it go Phil

Phil Simms played in an era where QBs were fair game on defense. Eli Manning played in the Sports Entertainment, "protect the QB" era of today.
