I'm currently reading Lost Man's Lane! It's set in the author's Indiana hometown (where I've also spent half my life) and is full of 90s nostalgia.
For a recommendation, Darcy Coates' From Below. It's unlike her other novels and follows a group diving to a sunken ship to film a documentary, but it also follows a second timeline explaining how the ship sank. Truly the perfect horror for anyone frightened by the depths of the ocean!

Stolen tongues is genuinely scary. It made me nervous to take my dog outside at night.

I agree it got to me in ways a horror story hasn’t in so so long, I’m not sure why haha

Horror novels are a delight that I firmly advocate should be read all year long.
You said Ronald Malfi and I immediately said “It’s gonna be Black Mouth” 😂
Stolen Tongues is a fantastic book
You should read “How to Sell A Haunted House” by Grady Hendrix…I think you’d like that one and Horrostor because everyone should read that one

I listened to Stolen Tongues on audio. The first chapter or prologue (can’t remember which it was) terrified me and I had to listen to it in chunks. The rest wasn’t quite so scary but it was really good! There’s nothing like a horror book on audio, literally someone just telling you a scary story like you’re around a campfire in the woods. The best!

Have you read or heard of _Our Share of Night_ by Mariana Enriquez and _Tender is the Flesh_ by Agustina Bazterrica? I think you might like those two books ; for me they were brilliant and very disturbing !!

I enjoyed the characters in Lost Man's Lane. I think this one will resonate with you.
Black Mouth I thought was good. It's a horror this time, lol
-- I see a little Wicked This Way Comes vibe from it, too. I think you'll see why when you get there

Ooo Lost Man's Lane is great and I definitely think it'll be up your alley.
For only good Indians, most people I know "nope" off the book because the indigenous dialect can be a bit hard to read for those who aren't used to it.

Sphere definitely caught me off guard, and it creeps back in my mind more often than I ever thought it would. I'm not even afraid of the ocean, so it wasn't even that aspect for me, but I don't want to spoil anything for anyone!

I'm halfway through The Queen by Nick Cutter (it drops today). It's definitely weird ;) Shoutout to Nat Cassidy's Nestlings. It dropped on Halloween last year, which is kind of cool, but misses out on all the people who only read horror for 'spooky season' and for people looking for this season, it's a year old :P

I liked Grady Hendrix’s TFGSG, but A LOT of people don’t… so I don’t know what you’ll think of it. I’m definitely a fan of Grady Hendrix and can’t wait to read more of his work!

I will slide a recommendation to you Mike. I recently discovered the author Brom and he does incredible gothic art. But I saw his book Lost Gods and I started reading it and this guy is hot on my radar. He also wrote a Krampus book which would be a great horror read for the Christmas Holiday! I hope you look him up and check out Lost Gods or Krampus by Brom. He might become your new favorite.

Excellent Selection! I love Michael McDowell and will be reading Blackwater soon. I highly recommend Gone To See The River Man. It has atmosphere in spades and is an amazing story. It is classified as extreme horror, but besides being a disturbing and sometimes uncomfortable read, it is not overly gratuitous when compared with other books from the genre. I have also recently discovered an author by the name of David Sodergren, loved everything I have read by him, especially The Haar and Maggie's Grave. Happy Halloween! 🎃

Only Good Indians is mostly hated as Jones' writing style is very unique and can be hard to follow. I'm not sure how much you'll like it - it's very stream of conciousness. It's a 5/5 for me though

If you want to try Peter Straub book I think Shadowlands would be probably better choice for you. A coming of age horror/fantasy that's very well written and and you would probably like the characters more. That said Ghost story is also great and one of his best.

The only good Indians is my favorite book of Jones’. I think you’d like Mongrels though. It’s werewolf coming of age.
    Fun facts:
Jones’ was my dad’s college roommate. I grew up on his stories, just my dad told them and they won’t be written down.
He grew up in a town near Midland and went to Texas Tech. His most recent book takes place in a town an hour from Lubbock (Levelland). I haven’t read all his books but he has a tendency to write in small town in west Texas. Give your fellow Texan a chance.

I read Grady Hendrix’s How to Sell a Haunted House and Ronald Malfi’s The Narrows during Spooky Season this year and liked both a lot. Definitely want to read more of both authors. I have read two of Ania Ahlborn’s novels in the past including Brother. Her books are truly scary and I’ve got two more of her books queued up. You are the inspiration for my own Spooky Season reads (thanks!) and I do read the genre all year long.

“We sold our Souls” by Grady Hendrix was a fun read similar to Best Friend. And it will give you some great Rock and Roll vibes. “My Heart is a chainsaw” by Jones has great Final Girl vibes. 😊

I downloaded and read Adam Nevill's Before You Sleep, a free download of three of his ghost stories and was impressed enough to buy an omnibus of his novels, I've literally just spent the best part of four hours reading The Ritual, very good! As for a recommendation, I really think you'd like The Ocean Dark by Christopher Golden, he's quite an underrated novelist and writes comics like Hellboy as well.

You've mentioned reading Blake Crouch in reverse publication order, just keep going until you get to his early horror novels. They are fantastic. He did a lot of collaborations with JA Konrath (who I also recommend), and they were vicious together.

Have you read Silvia Moreno-Garcia's horror novels? I just finished Silver Nitrate, and loved Daughter of Dr. Moreau & Mexican Gothic. Brother is SO GOOD.
After Silver Nitrate, I just started on The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne as part of current project of alternating horror and fantasy.

I'm currently reading Ronald Malfi's Small Town Horror. I read Black Mouth, and it felt like another of Stephen King's book, but definitely not like IT . . . in my opinion. And I'm one of the DNF people concerning The Only Good Indians.

Grady hendrix is great read the whole catalogue and mbfe was definitely the best…. Another newer horror author I like is Paul Tremblay(cabin at the end of the world) and Catriona Ward(last house on needless street)(I think she is British) super great stuff you’ll love but also the best nostalgia book for 80s/90s that isn’t horror but is sci-fi is ready player one
