In hindsight, ZT2 is up there with Skyrim and Fallout in the terms of how a community managed to push the game engine and its capabilities to the extreme. The game got modded to hell and back, some groups managed to update the graphics to modern standards, people programmed entirely new expansion packs complete with scenarios and unlockables, the animal coding and modelling got tweaked until it allowed to do flying animals and squids, something that even BF said it couldn't be done. Too bad the community is super toxic, but it's up there with some of the greatest modding ones in PC gaming.
There’s only one that I know of, which is Aurora Design’s Save the Saigas. It isn’t terribly difficult, but someone had to figure out how a scenario works (at the programming level) and reverse engineered it.

It was a mad competition among them, with groups routinely hacking each other and causing massive user wars based on popularity and which site hosted specific Downloads. There was this group spawned from a forum (cant remember if it was Zoo Tycoon Volcano) named Ch0des who terrorized a bunch of users and doxxed them back in 2010/2012.

Wish I could get a chance to work with a team on recreating this game from scratch or making a third installment for it , I would spend every drop of sweat in me and every mollecule and every ounce of passion in me in it to make it a true zoo tycoon game and give it that raw animal kingdom feel because I grew up with it and know exactly how it feels to spend hours upon hours playing.. Nowadays developers don't get it , it's not about HD or good cgi it's about the gameplay a game's willing to provide to a player , it could be a lifetime memory which he'll always cherish like this one !
Planet Zoo is a great sucessor, but if you want a 'recreation', you can download the Radical Remake mod. It updates most of the animals in base game and the first two expansion packs, modifies the UI and makes it look closer to a modern game.
reading the comments is making me realise i never had an original experience LMAO i used to spend so much time playing this game growing up :') i even still have the disk and have played it from time to time on my current pc, and honestly im both surprised and not surprised that it still holds up to this day. like, it's so enjoyable and fun to mess around with!! definitely still one of my all-time favourite games
@@cheepmovprod I bought mine virtually (it was from Amazon or eBay one of those two) instead of a physical copy, so that’s how I recommend you buy it. And if you have trouble installing it like I did, I installed it to the desktop because that’s the only place it would work, at least for me.
Probably one of my favorite things to do with this pack is to mix extinct mammals with modern ones to recreate the pleistocene and I also occasionally mix similar biomes together to get better mixes of species Mixes include (boreal +tundra=Siberian steppe Grasslands +deciduous forest =oak savannah Scrub+savannah =serengeti You can pretty much mix any biome together but probably stick to 2 biomes but I've had success with mixing boreal, Grassland and wetlands to recreate an upper midwest ecosystem
One of my favorite things I used to do with any of the expansion packs was to make a 4 or 5 star zoo with lots and lots of guests… but then release one of the animals and let it roam around xD All of the guests would freak out, start running, and then the rating of your zoo would get lower lol
The nostalgia is hitting me like a truck. I used to play the hell out of this and I didn't really understand english when I was playing this all those years ago so I did whatever I wanted to and it was a mess but I had so much fun. This was my first and only expansion pack I had for this game. I wanna play this game again... Also, this is my favorite theme.
I remember loving this game and I was sad that they stopped updating it later and it didn't work on modern windows but I'm also happy that now planet zoo exists which is pretty much just an upgraded, modernised version of it
Tyrannosaurus Rex 2 needs more space! JK, but in all honesty, Zoo Tycoon 2 was the best of Zoo Tycoon. The new one is a mess. But unfortunately, the series will never return the way it was, as Blue Fang games is now closed down :(
Don't worry we have 2 games that are spiritual successor to Zoo Tycoon 2 (and Extinct Animals DLC) 1. Planet Zoo from Frontier, the same company that makes Planet Coaster Imagine Planet Coaster freedom but creating a Zoo instead of Amusement Park 2. Prehistoric Kingdom, an indie that focused on creating Prehistoric Zoo not just Dinosaurs, there's also Mammals and eventually expand to cover more species.
I find it baffling that Microsoft didn't actually continue this franchise, it was a behemoth of a franchise that so many people enjoyed in some form, now they have to eat rocks since Planet Zoo is filling that niche that they could've continued to fill, but chose not to for completely baffling reasons.
Zt Freak yeah I remember when the website was closed down, I believe in the summer of 2012. It made me sad because ZT2 was my life and I visited its site every day.

The announcement trailer for Planet Zoo (from the same team behind Planet Coaster, coming to Steam later this year) was released recently and it looks amazing, maybe that can live up to the legacy of the original Blue Fang Zoo Tycoon series.
I got this for Christmas when a was a little kid. I did not understand the concept of "expansion packs" back then and so was unable to play it, not owning the base game :D
@matthewninja I actually like the Bluebuck (in general), but they could've changed it's design a lot more. Maybe they could've done both, that would be fine too. But if anything should've been replaced, it's the giant warthog and the giant camel ( A Brachiosaurus and a Kronosaurus).
They should release Zoo Tycoon 2 and all of it's DLCs on the Xbox 360. Because all of the Zoo Tycoon 2 DLCs and the orginal Zoo Tycoon 2 support Xbox 360 controller. It says so on the back of the dvd case if you don't believe me. Which a lot of you should if you own the game or still own the case to the game itself.

@matthewninja What's so great about the dodo? All it is is just a penguin/hornbill mutant. I don't care much for that animal, the kentrosaurus was better (so was the bluebuck in my opinion). Either way, I'm just glad they used the Triceratops and new gameplay.
@matthewninja I agree but they should've added the Spinosaurus, Atlas Bear, Herrarasaurus, Brachiosaurus, Kronosaurus, Plesiosaurus, or something else. And the 5 minigames MORE than make up for that. In my opinion African Adventure had the best animals out of all the expansion packs (except the pygmy hippo, hate it), promblem is: if you already have endangered species, there's no new gameplay. It would've been much better if it offered more gameplay and a few more animals.

I on the other hand liked it and think it's the 2nd best of the 4 packs. It had the best choice of animals out of the 4 in my opinion (except the Pygmy Hippo and Masai Giraffe), but they shoulda used a Spotted Hyena and a Cape Fur Seal. I liked the Meerkat & African Zoo missions, but I hate the Secretary Bird Mission.
