Ambela Compaign 1863 of British forces against Yousafzai Tribe.

The Ambela campaign in 1863 was one of many expeditions of Frontier area (this area was formally renamed the North West Frontier Province in 1901, present-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This campaign was against local Pashtuns of Yousafzai tribes of the border region.
The local Pashtuns were vehemently opposed to British colonial rule and frequently attacked British forces. The Syeds of Sitana, Malka and Takhta Ban always lead from the front. In 1858, an expedition led by Sir Sydney Cotton drove the Pashtuns from their base Sitana They were fortified in Naranji of Mardan district, now a days in Swabi district but disbursed by Guide platoon led by Sir Sydney Cotton. By 1863, however, they had regrouped around the mountain outpost of Malka under the command of Syed Mubarak Shah. A force led by Neville Chamberlain planned to destroy Malka. They want set up an operational base in the Chamla valley accessed by the Ambela Pass, but they were bogged down a numerically superior local force. Reinforcements drafted in by the local Commander-in-Chief of Frontier force eventually broke through the pass, received the surrender of the local Yousafzai tribes and went on to burn Malka. There were disputed claims from both sides about causalities during war, British claimed the expedition saw 1,000 British casualties and an unknown number of Indian casualties. But locals claims some 3000 British men killed and double from that wounded.
The Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab authorized an expedition of 6,000 men under General Neville Chamberlain to destroy Malka. The Lieutenant Governor acted without consulting the Commander-in-Chief of the Frontier Force. Chamberlain chose the Chamla Valley as his operational base and the Ambela Pass as the main access. He chose this valley as the access as he believed that the local Bunerwal people were friendly to British forces, this turned out to be a false impression as the Pashtuns had persuaded them that the British would annex their land if they failed to put up a defense.
The first Peshawar column reached the Ambela Pass on 20 October, after struggling on rough terrain, but failed to reach the base because local tribe’s men attached in Ambela Pass. British forces reached a place where a Police Post is situated now a day’s called Ambela Check point. British forces stayed and fortified there.
On 22 October a reconnaissance was attacked by some Yousafzai tribesman gathered from different areas of Bunir, Swat, Dir, Bajawar, Swabi and Mardan. They set a side there differences and decided to fight against British forces under Syed Mubarak Shah. As a result, Chamberlain proceeded to fortify his position in the pass on two rocky outcrops, he named it Eagle’s Nest and Crag Piquet (local people called it Qatal gat or Qataal Gat) because both sides lost a big number of men there. Eagle's Nest and Crag Piquet could only hold small numbers of men. The Pashtuns had amassed a force of local tribesmen consisting of some 15,000 men. The two outcrops were the scene of fierce fighting. On 30 October Crag Piquet was the scene of fierce hand-to-hand fighting. Crag Piquet fell to the Yousafzai Pashtuns three times in the next four weeks, but was retaken by British forces on each occasion. On 20 November Chamberlain was seriously wounded. Reinforcements were gradually drafted in on the orders of the Commander-in-Chief Sir Hugh Rose and he replaced Chamberlain with Major General John Garvock on 6 December.
When the war prolonged then the British contacted two Khans of Sudham Rustam namely Ajab Khan and Aziz Khan and give them 13000 rupees to contact Khans of Bunir local Jirga. They contacted Zaidullah Khan of Dagger Bunir. He played a big role to disbursed local tribesmen and British forces under Major General John Garvock entered Chamla Valley of Bunir.
The Local people surrendered to Major General John Garvock on 17 December and he sent a party to burn Malka. The British had restored peace but at the cost of heavy casualties. British forces stayed in Chamla Valley only a day after burned Malka.

ناٹیان ایک انگریزی لفظ Naughty On سے نکلا ہے۔ جب مجاہدین کے ایک چھوٹے سے دستے نے ناٹیان کے مقام پر پہاڑوں کے درمیان سے گزرتی انگریز فوج پر پہاڑوں کے ٹاپ سے بڑے اور درمیانے پتھر گرانے شروع کئے، تو نیچے انگریز فوج میں کھلبلی مچ گئی اور وہ چیخنے لگے کہ Naughty on, Naughty on!! یا شاید پورا جملہ ہو جس میں سے یہ دو الفاظ مجاہدین نے لئے اور اس جگہ کو ناٹیان کا نام دیا۔

And after zaid UAllah this act zaidullah was killed by Darviz khan son Aro khan in his house daggar.
