Westernisation comes with some drawbacks. Praising some western movies and directors is an old trend and it's an easy way to showcase your intellectuality. I am a big fan of Martin Scorsese, Nolan, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino etc, but I never forgot our legends with brilliant story-telling abilities. When we talk about Indian films, why do we show ourselves as less creative? Why do we shy out to talk about Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, Bimal Roy, Adoor Gopalakrishnan etc? Martin Scorsese admires Satyajit Ray a lot and he was the one who took the initiative to convince the juries to vote for Satyajit Ray for Academy Award. If you watch Martin Scorsese's movies like Taxi driver, Shutter Island etc. you'd clearly see the influence of Satyajit Ray in direction. The main problem is our mindset that Indian films mean Bollywood and others are regional movie industries, such as Telegu, Tamil, Bengali etc. We have to get out of this mindset otherwise we will always underestimate our legends.

Har baat pe colonial.Whats wrong with having a preference ?There are many others who respects and are inspired by Ray.Honestly,I know many people who absolutely love ray's mastery and many doesn't like it and that's alright. Its called preference.
Don't consider yourself smart by saying everyone a colonial mindset slave! It's the older generation's fault which barely saw ray's cinema and talked about it! Due to that, today's kids may know sholay, But still don't know apu trilogy and him
Hey friends, if you all can get the point that I want to convey!! Point is, if you are an Indian and you are discussing about greatest of all time directors like Scorsese, Nolan & then switch to discuss films in India (which is the case in video) & still can't remember Ray, Adoor G.,Gurudutt etc. & only thing that you remember is hum kewal roti, kapda, makan me phanse hain & then there are about 150 comments below your video literally debating the best directors ever walked on planet(irony is, they all are Indians) BUT STILL Ray doesn't come to your head - - - that says a lot about you, about your self-respect (& your mindset, which is colonial!!)... It's true that we don't make sci-fi films but then it's also not the single most criteria that you are a great director only, if you are making exponentially high budget sci-fi or complex films(which seems the case here with the understanding of who is greatest director). We can't compare Nolan & Ray based on their polar opposite films but we surely can compare Scorsese & Ray (if you are not afraid enough😉) but sadly we won't because either we haven't seen Ray (& Gurudutt & Gopalakrishnan etc) or we don't want to hurt popular opinion (& invite unnecessary criticism) that all the best things happen in west.. P. S. most people on this planet know English & hence watch English films..

1:50 I think this is only person who mentioned Dunkirk, I'm sure the interviewer liked this film and wanted to talk about it. And they both did. When some people say Nolan is great, they always talk about Dark knight, Inception. No one talks about Dunkirk, Memento, Following. Nolan shows his original style in these movies and not in Dark Knight series. He should be back with his original style with Oppenheimer. And then people won't like the movie, even if it's made by Nolan.

People have wierd obsession with Nolan. Sure he is good, probably one of the best of 21st century directors. But I have seen work of directors who are far better than him. For ex. - Satoshi Kon. His film Paprika served as an inspiration for Nolan's most talked about film Inception. Infact some of the scenes were same. Similarly, there are so many film makers about whom people should talk. The more you see the more your horizon will expand. Film makers like Satoshi Kon, Stanley Kubrick, Robert Eggers, Coen Brothers, Michael Haneke, Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho, Quintein Tarantino, David Fincher, Deninis Villeneuve, Alejandro Inarittu, Mamoru Oshii, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Terry Gilliam, Paul Thomas Anderson, Nicolas Winding Refn and Alfonso Cuaron to name a few should be talked about as much as Nolan if not more because all these are either equal or downright better than Nolan especially Oshii, Kon and Kubrick.
@Jeremy Grant 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Dr Strangelove were definitely better than anything that Nolan's put out. Same goes for other directors that I have mentioned. They have made movies which are far better than any of Nolan's work.
Lol ask each of these your so called great directors, that even they get inspiration from other piece of work, you guys just wanna look different and cool.
There are so many sci fic movies better than Interstellar like 2001 A Space Odyssey, Star Wars 5, Terminator 2, The Matrix, Dune, Back To The Future, Blade Runner, Alien, A Clockwork Orange

Why are you soo toxic about it I don't know I always see indian act like kids getting pissed for no reason, chalo theek hai uske man mei jo movies aaya usne bol Diya
2001 A Space Odyssey (1968) is far better than any of Nolan's Sci fi films. Nolan's Science Fiction may be the best among sci fi movies today, but they are second rate. The greatest sci fi stories have been written by HG Wells, Olaf Stapledon, Isaac Asimov or Arthur C Clarke which are yet to be adapted to cinema. As far as cinema as a whole is concerned, modern directors like Nolan have yet to reach the heights of Satyajit Ray, Ingmar Bergman, Kurosawa and their contemporaries. Cinema like all other art forms is dead.
It might be your opinion because art is subjective. I loved and adored 2001 but when I recommended it to my friends, they said it was a piece of garbage and I was like did we see the same thing? But soon I realised that everyone has a different taste when it comes to movies and we can't really rank movies or directors because for everyone its different. While its concerned with nolan, he receives the love he gets because while being complicated his movies are still easy to watch for newer audiences and are still good, whereas movies like 2001 are an acquired taste and not everyone will appreciate it because not everyone watches movies with that mindsets and as far as 2001 being better then any nolan flick, it really depends on what you prefer to see in a movie. Anyways have a great day/night

Storytelling is precious Art.❤
Nolan just plays with time 💥

I've watched all of his movies. Following, Insomnia, Memento, Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises, Prestige, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet. I've watched all of them. Hey fella Indians( still languishing in colonial hangover!), with utmost respect to Nolan Sir, do you even remember the phenomena of SATYAJIT RAY!!!!
EXACTLY
Har baat pe colonial.Whats wrong with having a preference ?There are many others who respects and are inspired by Ray.Honestly,I know many people who absolutely love ray's mastery and many doesn't like it and that's alright. Its called preference.
I was born in 1995
If internet wasn't here ,
I would not even know mr. Ray..
And it has nothing about colonialism..
Don't consider yourself smart by saying everyone a colonial mindset slave!
It's the older generation's fault which barely saw ray's cinema and talked about it!
Due to that, today's kids may know sholay,
But still don't know apu trilogy and him
Hey friends, if you all can get the point that I want to convey!!

Still its growing . Get the right stuff out
It might be your opinion because art is subjective.

I can enjoy a scene from a movie like Inglourious Bastards just as much as I enjoy a musical scene from a movie like Asuran(Tamil) which goes very well with the story.
