The superb thing about Carpool is how it manages to get the interviews to sound like chats. The interviewees don't appear to be promoting anything, and Llewellyn hits the perfect spot of not taking the conversation over, but guides them to keep them interesting.
I love how you can tell that David has a real interest in history! I love it when he really gets into the subject he's talking about! Love David Mitchell!! :D
Thoroughly enjoyed this. The environment seems to catch people far more intimately than even Parkinson could. Showing celebrities as real people with real thoughts and voices goes along way towards breaking the media driven 'celeb culture' in this country. Its good to finally see celebs as real people when they're not falling out of a nightclub, or getting out of a car with their legs open! The future of internet tv could learn from this.
I wish TH-cam showed the dates for these videos more prominently...still, thoroughly enjoyable and glad I found them (via a fully charged/carpool hybrid show).
Hey Robert, just wanted to leave a quick message here, to say how much I'm enjoying this show... only found out about it a few days ago, but I'm absolutely loving it. It's enormously cathartic to see such a relaxed approach towards genuine conversation here, rather than some scripted nonsense. Keep up the great work, sir.
I do agree Kryten doesn't get the credit he deserves. But I quite like Corden. Might be an affection to 'Smithy' from Gavin & Stacey. Watch his George Michael comic relief sketch. It's amazing!
If it wasn't for Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David Network TV would have still kept on churning out the same old derivative bland shit. However I'm sure Jerry will be devastated a nobody who never had an original thought is not impressed.
Woot! I have seen a lot of Mr.Mitchell's work here on youtube and am, I guess it's fair to say so, a fan of his now! Thanks, Mr.Llwellyn, once more for your great series of interviews - no matter if I know your guests, it's always interesting to listen to you talk with them! :)
"We're all lucky not to be a Chinese peasant dying in the 4th century A.D. at the age of seven. 'Cause that's about par." Dear lord, I love this quote and the man who uttered it.
I loved what he said about his experience at uni and how he wasn't really an academic. That essentially summed up exactly how I feel about being at uni, and I'm fourth year doing history too!
I love that the driver misses an exit because he's enthralled with David's rants. If I was given the task of driving him somewhere, I'd probably miss every exit for the same reason and end up driving into an ocean somewhere.
I began watching Carpool as an Canadian RD fan, before I had a good grasp of who its guests were. Since then I've become an avid anglophile, and a big fan of most of these people. David Mitchell in particular. Fantastic comedian, who could be my doppelgänger for his attitudes on most things, though better stated with wonderful pithy observations.
because there is something really good about conversations in cars that makes them so much more comfortable than a face-to-face chat, and because this format doesn't cost the interviewee any time - they'd be travelling anyway.
The show concept is very simple. How could I get to talk to interesting but generally busy people for a super low budget, experimental online series? Somehow I stumbled on giving people a ride, it grew from there. It has never been on the BBC, it started and continues on the net. Thankfully it worked, the combined download figure for iTunes and TH-cam now exceeds 7 million. (This is Robert writing BTW)
@TheBogangle Yes, it is that guy from Scrapheap. This show is called Carpool, as seen on Dave in the UK, and the bloke is Robert Llewellyn, also from Red Dwarf
David Mitchell is absolutely right about the horrors of privatisation. Putting public utilities in private hands has been the hallmark of greedy, irresponsible conservative governments for decades. You don't have to be jeremy Corbyn to figure that out.
+Rex Mundi Makes me wonder what you put here first as I see you've edited the above. Surprised you made it to the part about privatisation if you believe at least one member in the car was a "boring twat" as you've written above?
Yet the media is all Tory propaganda and they get idiots blaming everybody else for what Tories cause. People think all the Thatcherite ex Tories in UKIP and anti EU Tories care about British people, but they will keep saying there has to be a hard Brexit as an excuse to kill off anybody who isn't any use at being a slave for the few at the top and their tax dodging corporate donors.
I love watching David Mitchell on Channel 4's Ten O'Clock Live show, it is clear to see that not only is he very funny but also very intelligent, witty and honestly knows what he is talking about.
Great stuff. Let me get this straight. You went inside my brain, via your computer interface, using my TH-cam comment and discerned the fact that I misunderstood what was said. You are a genius !
I've watched a few of these carpools and have never come away disappointed. if this is 'make your own television' then bravo! keep making them. the idea is incredibly original for a one to one chat show. problem is...guest hosts? please, no.
yeah I am really enjoying this concept too. always interesting. it would be cool if they had a website where you could follow them on a map/gps so you could follow it on google maps at street level to see what their drive was truly like.
Do I remember correctly that Robert goes way back with Douglas Adams? Good question for The Unbelievable Truth ? Wow I love the lively conversation from whatever the perspective. The waste is the flaw, David.
I'm currently living outside of the UK and we get BBC World and BBC Entertainment (formerly known as BBC Prime) on cable. The latter used to consist of an excellent mix of documentaries, comedies and educational programmes, but since about three years ago it's just soaps and puppet shows for toddlers (the latter being the more intellectual alternative, I guess). It almost makers me wish for some commercials.
Did you forget that he was in an episode of red dwarf, Robert? One of the ones later where the crew were alive again. I think at around the same time as Bruiser.
The idea of carpooling is an alien concept to us country dwellers. Up here in cumbria, we think it entails cutting the roof off your car, sealing the doors with silicone and filling it with water.
Love revisiting these videos when I have nothing to do. Will you be making any more any time soon? I do a similar thing on TH-cam, except by myself and on a motorbike...and no celebrities...
It's brilliant, how do you get these wonderful people to drive with you. I would love to talk to David Mitchell, Stephen Fry,Brian Cox and Sir Patrick Stewart.
@DrownedBeliefs The confusion probably my fault. The refining process is highly efficient, no argument there. Sure it uses a lot of electricity which very few people factor in, but that's not what I'm talking about. When you burn fossils to produce power, anything other than 100% efficiency is a waste. We waste billions of gallons/cubic meters every day, we really DO waste far too much. When a renewable energy source is less efficient, who gives a stuff. We must not waste what we cannot replace
Not having the time to check all the comments on all the episodes of Carpool and Fully Charged on TH-cam I miss a lot of stuff. I can see that this particular episode has created quite a discussion, far more than I could possibly find time to read. If you are interested I do a show that is very much focussed on the issues around future energy and electric/hybrid cars, called Fully Charged. It's on TH-cam. If you hate this, that will drive you insane :-)
It should be on the BBC though. Some of the responses from the guests shine a light on aspects of their personalities which would never be revealed in a more conventional chat show format. This show is gold. I must admit I am a reasonably obsessive RD fan and therefore more than a little biased..
@bodnotbod you should see the nearest town to chernoyble, It was evacuated, and still lays abandoned. Plants and trees have taken over, the town. The town still has elevated levels of radiation.
The superb thing about Carpool is how it manages to get the interviews to sound like chats. The interviewees don't appear to be promoting anything, and Llewellyn hits the perfect spot of not taking the conversation over, but guides them to keep them interesting.
instablaster.
My David Mitchell addiction is getting out of hand now
I love how you can tell that David has a real interest in history! I love it when he really gets into the subject he's talking about! Love David Mitchell!! :D
this may just be the best online tv show ever created. i love it. it takes such a refreshingly relaxed yet personal take on interviews
"they didn't have a Chernobyl, they were just careful"
love that quote...!
I would love more episodes with David Mitchell, this might be your best episode.
Great relaxed chat. David always give great interviews, such a casually interesting and funny guy.
Now I see where Jerry Seinfeld got the idea for his 'comedians in cars getting coffee' !
"got" is a very generous word.
Rockmyballsplease and that fat prick James Corden
I do agree Kryten doesn't get the credit he deserves. But I quite like Corden. Might be an affection to 'Smithy' from Gavin & Stacey.
Watch his George Michael comic relief sketch. It's amazing!
Oh and I don't rate Seinfeld at all.
If it wasn't for Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David Network TV would have still kept on churning out the same old derivative bland shit. However I'm sure Jerry will be devastated a nobody who never had an original thought is not impressed.
This makes me realise how much I love David Mitchell.
Woot! I have seen a lot of Mr.Mitchell's work here on youtube and am, I guess it's fair to say so, a fan of his now! Thanks, Mr.Llwellyn, once more for your great series of interviews - no matter if I know your guests, it's always interesting to listen to you talk with them! :)
David Mitchell is on my list of love to sit in a bar chatting to comedians
Just discovered this series over the weekend....love it! And I have dozens still to watch!
"We're all lucky not to be a Chinese peasant dying in the 4th century A.D. at the age of seven. 'Cause that's about par."
Dear lord, I love this quote and the man who uttered it.
David Mitchell is so very right about the nightmare of privatisation. really enjoyed his conversation tfs
Great thing about doing a TH-cam search for David Mitchell is finding a cool show like Carpool!!!
I loved what he said about his experience at uni and how he wasn't really an academic. That essentially summed up exactly how I feel about being at uni, and I'm fourth year doing history too!
David Mitchell speaks with so much maturity n intelligence 😀 you always imagine him to be Mark...
Great to see a nice, long, (mostly) format-free, structure-free talk with people I admire.
I love that the driver misses an exit because he's enthralled with David's rants. If I was given the task of driving him somewhere, I'd probably miss every exit for the same reason and end up driving into an ocean somewhere.
I really like David's voice..
Really enjoy the whole carpool series....televise immediately.....Quality!!!!!
I began watching Carpool as an Canadian RD fan, before I had a good grasp of who its guests were. Since then I've become an avid anglophile, and a big fan of most of these people. Two of my favorite comedians are in the same place! It's Kryten meets Mark Corrigan from Peep show!
great to see Robert back on tv ,he was great in red dwarf
Watching this today, ten years later... who could've foreseen what the country, or rather the whole world, would be like?
We need more of these, please Robert!
The show concept is very simple. How could I get to talk to interesting but generally busy people for a super low budget, experimental online series? Thankfully it worked, the combined download figure for iTunes and TH-cam now exceeds 7 million. (This is Robert writing BTW)
awesome! Really enjoyed watching this, D mitchell is awesome.
'this too shall pass"
I could watch interviews with David Mitchell for hours and hours.
@TheBogangle Yes, it is that guy from Scrapheap. This show is called Carpool, as seen on Dave in the UK, and the bloke is Robert Llewellyn, also from Red Dwarf
"there's still songs of praise" .. Oh David I do love you :)
I am a loyal viewer of the fully charged channel thanks to this video. oh and david is always interesting.
David and Robert have a sponteneity that's cool
jerry seinfeld owes this channel dosh
David Mitchell is absolutely right about the horrors of privatisation. Putting public utilities in private hands has been the hallmark of greedy, irresponsible conservative governments for decades. You don't have to be jeremy Corbyn to figure that out.
+Rex Mundi Makes me wonder what you put here first as I see you've edited the above. Surprised you made it to the part about privatisation if you believe at least one member in the car was a "boring twat" as you've written above?
+Rex Mundi You are right --but it won't be long before the world is owned by privatisation too.
When you live in a post-communist "transitioning" country like Serbia, you have no doubt that privatisation is always a borderline criminal activity.
Suzanne S How is all the media Tory propaganda ? If anything most media leans heavily on the left.
Perfect duo. Both really interesting fellows.
David Mitchell is Brilliant!
Aw man... if there's one person on the planet I'd love to go on a road trip with, it'd have to be David Mitchell.
This has aged pretty well all things considered :-)
"if I did have an electric car" Robert Llewellyn 2010
It's Euston arch, the original entrance to euston st. underground station in london, we were all terribly sad when it was demolished.
What a delight
Both these blokes are legends.
I love watching David Mitchell on Channel 4's Ten O'Clock Live show, it is clear to see that not only is he very funny but also very intelligent, witty and honestly knows what he is talking about.
i must must must remember to "like" things i like, .. I am coming to the conclusion that i just love everything with David Mitchell in. .....
Great stuff. Let me get this straight. You went inside my brain, via your computer interface, using my TH-cam comment and discerned the fact that I misunderstood what was said. You are a genius !
david mitchell is the man! and London looks BEAUTIFUL that morning
love this, such a good concept and good conversation
carpool is like the best podcast ever made
Make that three generations of agreement.
david mitchell is like a sunday newspaper
this is brilliant, thank you
Happy Birthday Robert Llewellyn!
davids rain forest rant will save this world. LOL
Ah OK, thank you. I think I must agree with David and you about the unfortunate demise of this lovely piece of architecture.
so comfy and funny
I've watched a few of these carpools and have never come away disappointed. if this is 'make your own television' then bravo! keep making them. the idea is incredibly original for a one to one chat show. problem is...guest hosts? please, no.
RIXRADvidz Agreed!
yeah I am really enjoying this concept too. always interesting. it would be cool if they had a website where you could follow them on a map/gps so you could follow it on google maps at street level to see what their drive was truly like.
I enjoyed this. Thank you
I Fucking love this show.... So much better than the American show. Great interviewer/ "friend in the car. 😮"
I cant explain how much i fancy david mitchell
Do I remember correctly that Robert goes way back with Douglas Adams? Good question for The Unbelievable Truth ? Wow I love the lively conversation from whatever the perspective. The waste is the flaw, David.
Ahhh… a 2009 david Mitchel
A simple and effective idea :) This is a great little show XD
Ahhh garageband loops. Gotta love royalty free stuff :D
David Mitchell AND Robert Llewellyn!! :D
Ahh it's a breath of fresh air.
I'm currently living outside of the UK and we get BBC World and BBC Entertainment (formerly known as BBC Prime) on cable. 1:50 "We're not gonna have the internet"
I just burst into tears....
I got over it once I realised it was a real carpool. I wrote a note here but god only knows where it is. Viva le Mitchell !
The idea of carpooling is an alien concept to us country dwellers. Up here in cumbria, we think it entails cutting the roof off your car, sealing the doors with silicone and filling it with water.
Love revisiting these videos when I have nothing to do. Will you be making any more any time soon? I do a similar thing on TH-cam, except by myself and on a motorbike...and no celebrities...
both awesome. Never thought watching two people in a car could b this entertaining.
BTW is it just me that thinks they should do a stoned edition :D
"they say in 10 years they'll be a power disaster"
Uploaded 10 years ago
Wait it's 2020, oh god what if that's next?
…it was
you guys do realise the driver is the robot from red dwarf and the main presenter of scrapheap challenge
It's brilliant, how do you get these wonderful people to drive with you. I would love to talk to David Mitchell, Stephen Fry,Brian Cox and Sir Patrick Stewart.
Any chance you live anywhere near Ealing? I could use a lift in towards Shepherds Bush... We'd have a right bit of banter on the way.
A delight!
Well that was just charming.
yea! the peep show is like a seinfeld/ curb your enthusiasm type of humor
Haha, stuff the radioactive waste in the rain forest. Brilliant!
"Oh Christ, someone should get Steve a sandwich" lol
In the time it took for the ad to finish I googled raconteur.
Awesome :)
Incidentally, I'm in Australia so I haven't actually seen most of the shows that you listed :( Time to start combing youtube.
two gentlemen indeed
@DrownedBeliefs The confusion probably my fault. The refining process is highly efficient, no argument there. I'd vote for David Mitchell for a government position - he makes more sense than most politicians.
Not having the time to check all the comments on all the episodes of Carpool and Fully Charged on TH-cam I miss a lot of stuff. Some episodes were shown on TV, though, right? On Dave and possibly also the Discovery Channel (or National Geographic or something like that) ?
@athox 'that guy' is Robert Llewellyn.
Has the song at the beginning a particular title? Or is it just the soundtrack
It should be on the BBC though. Some of the responses from the guests shine a light on aspects of their personalities which would never be revealed in a more conventional chat show format. This show is gold. I must admit I am a reasonably obsessive RD fan and therefore more than a little biased..
did they hahaha that's brilliant, i don't think i've seen that episode
I was actually falling asleep at the 8:10 mark. Sounded like David was aswell, even though he was doing the talking
@bodnotbod you should see the nearest town to chernoyble, It was evacuated, and still lays abandoned. Plants and trees have taken over, the town. The town still has elevated levels of radiation.
Great vid again. Can you buy a new mic for the passenger its very distorted over 10mph :)
I want to see a group carpool. It may take an interesting turn.
