  • If you're a psychiatrist or psych NP who is thinking about starting your own private practice, this video is for you! I recently had the chance to interview Jess Romeo - a psych NP who was able to reach tremendous private practice success in my career mentorship program. In this interview, Jess shares his reasons for joining the program, the mindset shift that he experienced after joining, how much $$$ he made from the investment, as well as his advice to someone who is thinking about starting their own private practice.

Jess also shared some exciting news about his own program that he is launching to educate and help psychiatric professionals and psychotherapists provide better trans-affirming care. The program includes personalized coaching and covers all the specifics that providers need to know in order to provide an excellent level of trans-affirming care to their patients. Stick around until the end of the video to find out why it is so crucial that providers get more knowledge on this topic and why Jess is my favorite go-to resource for anything related to it.

The inspiration! I am LMFT and am considering attending medical school and doing a psychiatry or neurology residency or family therapy.

His program is HIGHLY needed. In school now, the authors of these textbooks included LGBTQIA+ data to be compliant at a tune of approx. 6 sentences. Shameful. We wonder why we do not have trans/gender-sensitive providers. You literally could create an entire university to help providers become more competent in this area.

Question regarding new grad PMHNPs. The goal is a private practice but obviously we need a few years of experience under our belts before that, what would be the best places to get the years of experience to learn and hone our practice without being overworked/ burnt out?

Hi Amanda! If the goal is to get experience, working at an agency/insurance job will be your best bet for 1-2 years right out of school. Working at a job like this for a short amount of time won't make you super burned out (whereas doing it for longer definitely will!) and will be a good way to get experience since you will be seeing a high volume of patients at a job like this.
