I hated the ending of this movie. Felt like it just ground to a halt with Mike's son being revealed. Lost all the momentum and stakes especially with bad cgi
I loved Bad Boys For Life in cinema. But then i came home and watched first two parts and i have to say, they are way better and more entertaining with better action and better craft. Still, BBFL are awsome.
I liked the movie quite a bit but the thing that really stuck out to me was that the whole secret son and secret lover thing really came out of nowhere. A third film probably wasn't expected by Bay, so he most likely wouldn't have any ideas or requests for the film but it still feels so out of nowhere that he has a son and ex-girlfriend who was a mob boss or something like that.

I was really hyped for Bad Boys for Life and got bitterly disappointed. In the “Every frame a painting” video about Michael Bay there’s a section about why his copycats suck. And this movie absolutely proves that. In my view, the directors of Bad Boys for Life had absolutely no idea, why the first and especially the second Bad Boys movies were so great. Michael Bay, at least before Transformers, was a master of 2 things. Making every scene look double as expensive as it was and having a perfectly fitting musical score to sell those seemingly expensive shots. Now let’s look at those aspects in Bad Boys for Life. 1. every big action scene plays out during the night and is made with too much mediocre CGI, which makes every scene look half as expensive as it probably was. 2. The score is an abomination. Who puts a slow drama score under fast action scenes, with the original BB theme sprinkled in every few minutes? So… the movie looks and sounds somewhere from mediocre to awful and that running gag with Marcus now being religious is simply stupid and robs the movie fun instead of bringing it to it.
The plot structure was far too much of an incoherent mess for me to enjoy this movie. Nothing made any kind of sense and it stopped me from ever being invested or caring about what happened to any of the characters.
Exactly what I think. Bad Boys II is my favorite movie of all time and this one really didn't feel like a Bad Boys film to me. I loved the way it was directed and the humor worked, but this one felt so generic. If the movie had another title, I guess I would've liked it better. The directors did a great job though. Only the script was bad and didn't match with the previous movies.
Maybe it's because I rewatched the John Wick trilogy right before I saw this for the first time lately, but I think the action is real good in this film. Bay certainly has his appeal with how frenetic his action can get, but the steady camera shots, restrained editing and old-fashioned stunt work were quite welcome for me. CGI didn't stick out too much to me and it updated things without sacrificing that 90's type of bloodshed (rubber bullets, different police tactics). Much like many other films lately, you can feel Wick's influence right down to the color palette. That's on top of what makes this movie work in other places.
@Dope Stuff ENGLISH yeah lot of people did enjoy it but for me it was badly shot and the story was all over the place. If the action scenes were well shot and edited better I would have enjoyed it but next to John Wick or The Raid no action film should be that poorly shot. Shame as I had high hopes for this movie and I been a fan of Bay in the past.
I started watching while waiting for a tired and boring movie, but damn it, the movie was entertaining! It even felt good as an some overflowing 1980s action movie. What a great surprise!
I'm not going to deny the directors inspiration by Michael bay, but you can definetly see a clear trough line i their filmography, from black (wich is the film that attracted Bruckheimer in the first place) wich is a serious drama inspired by romeo and Juliet on modern day Brussels. It sadly never got a US release though. Then their previous film 'patser' (gangsta) whuch kind of takes elements from old school scorsese gangster films and also takes many of the elements to a new modern place. This one is far more neurotic and action heavy though. I also personally think their movies have some of the best montages out there.
I may be harping on something inconsequential, but here goes: "I don't want to over-praise Bad Boys For Life." Why not? Is that so wrong? If you enjoy it as much as this video suggests, if you like it more the more you think about it, what is so wrong with just having a good time and praising a film you accordingly without feeling the need to temper that enjoy with caveats? There isn't enough pure positivity in film discourse online anymore. It's all about who can top who with the hottest hot take of hyperbolic hatred and cynicisms. It's like people are afraid to just let themselves unabashedly love movies without feeling the need to add a disclaimer like "It's not flawless BUT...it's a good movie BUT..." Is there really a need to preface praise with concessions that "this thing I like isn't perfect?"
Because it isn’t perfect. It’s a good film but I’d still argue it has issues, I just didn’t care to discuss it’s negatives as much as I wanted to discuss what I found positive about it. I wasn’t hedging my bets as much as just saying, yes it isn’t the best action film, but I enjoyed it and here is what I enjoyed about it.
Ross where you been bruh? Ok so just watched the video. Honestly I wasn't wow'd by the movie. I didn't realize it wasn't Michael Bay either so I definitely think that explains it. I feel like it would be impossible for this movie to fail though since Martin Lawrence and Will Smith are a damn near perfect pair. I'm going to have to watch all three this weekend though... only way to be sure.
rng81 yeah noticed it in the cinema. Will Smith is in his 50s now, yet he moves like a 20 something. In other aspects of the movie they played with the 2 leads as being old now. So in fight scenes they should be slower, and play on that.
@@ActionJackson1982 something like that. Remember in the movie as much as he is an older person, he still can move around quickly, he still dresses like a young person, he drives fast cars and he still looks young ( as much as Marcus Burnette had to put dye Mike's beard.)
Can we just take minute just to appreciate Bad Boys For Life? Like of out all action movie sequels, this one not only matches the quality of original, but even surpasses it almost every level?
I like all of the Bad Boys movies and for me the third one was better than anticipated. The only thing I don't like is the immense shootout at the end which kinda ridiculed the entire movie more than necessary. Of course Bad Boys was never about realism, but that shootout was like in a cartoon with bulletproof superheroes.
It was a cool movie. As a film debut, the Belgium directors did good, but it doesn't have the intensity as the other two. The balcony fight scene could've bn waay practical and better, the latino sidekicks are not there and the circular shots were used too soon and unnecessary, but it's a cool movie
mike's story in bb4l is pretty much the same as the story of gemini man that came out a couple of months earlier. same beats, maverick loner getting passed it willy getting replaced by his spawn, learning his limitations and earning 'family' along the way. both were undercooked, generically average action films.
I really loved this film and it’s the best one from the franchise. It seems like your criticizing the film but I mean it’s not like an Oscars film. I find it that your kinda nitpicking it but I mean it’s your opinion so that’s okay.
The “ lost son “ subplot was the low point of this film. Also the cgi was real bad.And what’s wrong with the “ male gaze “? Women objectify men all the time!
Funny enough, the whole son story kinda turned me off too 🤣🤣🤣. What probably could've worked for me is if he thought that was his son and further down in the movie it wasn't or summ
It wasn't for me. Not anything against the hard work of the directors, producers, editors or crew, but I felt the script was lost with all the improv between the leads, the twists didn't land and no moments stick out in my mind post viewing.
It’s too serious and people love it no what makes the first two fun is not the action or comedy but that it was just silly fun. The chemistry between Markus and Mike is what drives the movies and when it becomes too serious it drags it’s not what we’re here to see we wanna have fun. Yes Bad Boys And Bad Boys 2 had some serious moments but most of the film still focused on there journey together and that’s what’s fun. Bad Boys For Life had way too much serious moments and dragged the whole film down. If they are old fine but play on that they didn’t do enough of it how cool what it be to have Markus struggle killing guys cause he forgot his glasses they did that a bit but not enough of it. How cool would it be for Mike to still try to act like he’s young they did that but not enough of it. Plus’s if you got a small budget fine Bay had a small budget on Bad Boys and that film seemed to have more action and better action then this film did. I don’t hate Bad Boys For Life but my main issue way too serious for no reason and that’s not what this franchise is it’s suppose to be a fun ride not a serious ride.
I know there's a whole serious point about how follow-ups to the work of lurid auters opens up the opportunity to elevate the worst aspects of the films but often comes at the cost of the sense of character that made those weaknesses worth tolerating, but now I just can't stop thinking about being chased down by Michael Bay in real life like a very stupid horror movie.
Their chemistry was there but i didnt like the story. Theyre narcotic cops and in the previous sequels its always been a story about that entertwined with their relationship. This was all about Will Smith and his want for the story to revolve around him. The timeline didnt make sense and his relationship with this woman absolutely didnt make sense. Each movie got progressively better and they fell back hard on this one. I did appreciate the inclusion of the Original score from the first movie in some of the scenes. That put a big smile on my face.
I still have not finished the first one and never seen the second one... I think I have some homework to do... PS : I now would like to replace "The Male Gaze" into "The Bay Gaze" that sounds more badass! XD
Rossatron, you make a lot of valid points, and ironically enough, that's why I love Bad Boys for Life more than Bad Boys 2 (which is one of the worst films ever made.).
Glad to hear the gaze is now more appropriate and character based than the director's fetish fuel. Shame to hear it's not as practical but more widely shot and less quick cutting action sounds like a plus. I'll check it out, thanks!
I'm probably speaking for myself , I wish Michael Bay directed this one, it could've been better. Plus Miami is his stomping ground. This movie is nowhere near the greatness of the previous two. THIS FELT LIKE A TIK TOK VERSION OF THE DUMBEST TELENOVELA STORYLINE.
🤣🤣🤣🤣, I like Michale bay stuff, I wish he kinda tone down on his editing. Sometimes I feel like I'm gonna get a seizure. But when he's filming bad boys, you always feel the intensity
Who cares about the "male gaze?" If it offends you, don't watch it. You're fooling yourself if you think there isn't a female gaze. You're fooling yourself if you think men aren't objectified as well.
The film was fun enough, but I feel it's time Hollywood stops doing police brutality for fun, the same way they stopped doing sexual assault for fun. As fun as it was to watch Mike and Marcus mess around with Michael Shannon in Bad Boys 2, the scene with Mike, a hammer, and Manny made me think about all the police brutality for fun that we have seen. There is still a place for police brutality in the right context, but that should not be in an action-comedy and by the heroes.
People seemed to love this film but I found it so boring it had some funny parts but it was missing that Bayham just me. Bad Boys for life was only successful because people learned Michael Bay wasn’t involved
Will had too much creative control. The only person who could beat him is a younger version of himself. He did the same thing when he made Gemini man. It was a disappointing movie. Gemini not even watching anything other than the trailer
Lol. This looks so bad. I'm sure the big action spectacle will return in full form to film soon, but this definitely wasn't it. In a world where John Wick exists, everyone else is just trying to catch up and using an old IP like this is not the way to get there.
I like the movie, but the ending is fuckin terrible. Mike's kid is a mass murderer and he killed Captain Howard. That guy doesn't deserve any redemption. In general, it also makes no sense that he suddenly becomes "good" just because his mommy lied to him about his daddy.
I liked the movie for the most part. But the "Father Son" dynamic really didn't work. It feels SO contrived and shoehorned into the script like Venom in Spiderman 3. First off the actor that plays the son looks nothing like Will Smith. So when they do the mirror stuff it comes off SO forced. The smaller budget and scale does hurt the film when compared to Bad Boys 2. But Bad Boys one had a small budget as well and it shows Micheal Bay's ONLY talent. Which is making EVERY shot look like a million dollar money shot. There is also a myriad of little nit picks I have. But I can chalk them up to standard Hollywood breaking reality movie bullshit. I do regret that this is the last time we will see Joe Pantialano as the Chief chewing them out and giving them tips at the same time. He was the most realistic Police Chief I have seen in a mainstream movie. The problem I have with the movie is the the son plotline which is forced and the possible Fast and Furious style sequel this movie this movie implies we will get next time around.
The plot in this film made no sense. Stuff happens, and people do things just for spectacle. Nobody makes choices that are normal. The back story is just silly and slapped together.
@Dope Stuff ENGLISH doesn't have to necessarily be young, given that they are older men now. I'm British, so biased when making my choice. Thandie Newton, Naomie Harris or Rosamund Pike all do it for me.
@Dope Stuff ENGLISH I find that many young actresses now do the whole dress like a dude, act like a dude thing. So I'm more inclined to go for some class.
I have to disagree, Bad Boys for Life was boring & out of touch with dated humour, it's almost as bad as 6 Underground & the "twist" you could see coming a mile off, hopefully a movie like this is the death knell of this type of action movie for good - looks good though
@Dope Stuff ENGLISH I'm not defending either movies, both for me were incredibly bad movies, 6 Underground's kinetic & bombastic grandeur as you say is all style over substance in my opinion & as a result it adds to the lack of any decent story moments to making it boring, i'm just sick of "Bayhem" type of movies, if I wanna watch slo-mo i'll watch the Slo-mo guys on TH-cam & if I wanna watch women' walk in front of a camera with it focusing on their behind I can always watch a Big Pimpin' or any other late 90's rap video, but to each their own.
F**k it i love Bay and no I’m not a teenager cause people say Bay makes films for young boys I’m 29. I don’t understand the hate for Bay he makes fun action packed movies what’s wrong with that. Everyone of his movies well maybe a select few are fun can’t all be winners. From Armageddon to The Rock to Pain and Gain and Bad Boys he’s films are long but who cares you get 2 hours of enjoyment. I know lots of people that love Armageddon my mom loves it Pear Harbour gets s**t on just because Bay directed it I don’t see any issues with it I think it was well done. Bay made a buddy cop film fun what makes it fun is the chemistry between Markus and Mike and getting into crazy moments together and the over the top action sequences work with there characters. Look at Lethal Weapon Mil Gibson and Danny Glover great chemistry together and they get into some crazy moments and everyone loves those movies they are the same style as Bays Bad Boys. What’s with the hate with Bay is everyone just mad he went from commercials and music videos to being one of the most successful action movie directors of are time he has his own style that a lot of directors have tried to copy. Everyone is always big on character development but the movies Bay makes they don’t need supper deep character development all the time. Just enjoy the ride.
Love Rossatron, but BB3 is the worst movie of the serie. The only good thing in this was Bay's cameo. The acting, a villain with no deep motivation, bad action, main characters being pushed by the story most of the time, even the comedy is bad. I found this movie really really boring. I think it is the perfect equivalent of John Wick 3. Maybe was inspired by Lethal Weapon 4, but fails to make that connection between family, age, and duty. The good thing is Mike's internal problem. But doesn't connect as it should. More like Weak Boys Weak Boys, what you gonna do, what you gonna do when we throw for you. Really happy I didn't went to the cinema to watch this film. BB3 had much money because BB2 was very good! If there was a BB4 I guarantee would flop. So sad Michael Bay couldn't end this serie as it deserved. This is Bay's serie, that's why it was successful, can't work with imitations.
I could barely watch the trailer, let alone the film, it just looks so cheap in the action department. And Martin Lawrence clearly thought he was in another Big Momma's sequel and decided to go method and ditch the fat suit.
I hated it. The new, younger team were underwritten and irritating. I also felt Martin Lawrence’s performance was phoned in, a lot of his lines were poorly delivered in my opinion. The first two movies may be a little crass but they’re much more enjoyable.
I obviously considered holding back this video amidst what is happening, but to me the film seemed a fantasy enough to be seen in its own context and not the real-world one it could inhabit. I am not sure if that is the correct choice, but I hope it is.

After seeing 6 Underground I'm glad Bay didn't direct Bad Boys For Life.
6 Underground was really badly made for a action film. Bay definitely peaked at Bad Boys 2 and everything after has been very hit and miss.
Great video Ross, any plans to review Extraction(2020)?
I agree with every single word well done mate!!!
Sorry but "Bay's gaze" is playful, fun and sexy. People take it way too seriously. It just stylish and fun.
Great video, maybe the next can be about the movie extraction
PUT YOUR GLASSES ON!!!
Loved that part.
Great job
I may be harping on something inconsequential, but here goes:
"I don't want to over-praise Bad Boys For Life."
Why not? Is that so wrong? If you enjoy it as much as this video suggests, if you like it more the more you think about it, what is so wrong with just having a good time and praising a film you accordingly without feeling the need to temper that enjoy with caveats?
There isn't enough pure positivity in film discourse online anymore. It's all about who can top who with the hottest hot take of hyperbolic hatred and cynicisms. It's like people are afraid to just let themselves unabashedly love movies without feeling the need to add a disclaimer like "It's not flawless BUT...it's a good movie BUT..."
Is there really a need to preface praise with concessions that "this thing I like isn't perfect?"
I was amazed at just how Bay the non-action scenes were, to the point I had to double check that he wasn't directing...
I'm busier these days, and TH-cam has to take a backseat to work and personal film project stuff.
@@Rossatron I know the struggle. Glad you're still putting out content though. You got me hooked with the predator video lol
That face replacement on the balcony scene was really badly stickiing out :P
Yuup! If there were issues, they could've filmed that closer or something, the face replacement was unnecessary and was like sore sticking out
rng81 yeah noticed it in the cinema. Will Smith is in his 50s now, yet he moves like a 20 something. In other aspects of the movie they played with the 2 leads as being old now. So in fight scenes they should be slower, and play on that.
@@ActionJackson1982 something like that. Remember in the movie as much as he is an older person, he still can move around quickly, he still dresses like a young person, he drives fast cars and he still looks young ( as much as Marcus Burnette had to put dye Mike's beard.)
ruddiato if Will Smith in real life can’t move as fast as he used to then maybe they should have used that for the movie, instead of pretending
@@ActionJackson1982 maybe so, but you know how that goes
Just yesterday i was chekin your Channel craving for more content n now bum. Thanks!
Nobody does movie talk like Rossatron.
I have the bell rung and I am just now seeing this.
Have you watch gangs of london
Can we just take minute just to appreciate Bad Boys For Life? Like of out all action movie sequels, this one not only matches the quality of original, but even surpasses it almost every level?
I grew up with the first two films, love the cast, but the Action was shitty in the third film.
CGI till you through up....
Yea the third one was OK
A new Ross video! I make this comment in sacrifice to the algorithm gods that this video may get bumped
Bad Boys 3 is the movie America needs right now but doesn't deserve
I'll admit I missed Bay's excess in Bumblebee. Here, I actually thought BB3 was better than BB2.
It was a cool movie. As a film debut, the Belgium directors did good, but it doesn't have the intensity as the other two. The balcony fight scene could've bn waay practical and better, the latino sidekicks are not there and the circular shots were used too soon and unnecessary, but it's a cool movie
@Alex Kanyima they have a strong fan base ever since part 1, part 3 focused more on story which wasn't bad, just that certain elements were missing
Good choice
mike's story in bb4l is pretty much the same as the story of gemini man that came out a couple of months earlier.
same beats, maverick loner getting passed it willy getting replaced by his spawn, learning his limitations and earning 'family' along the way.
both were undercooked, generically average action films.
yeah, i really surprised for Bad Boy for Life, its good
Michael Bay's first VR film will actually be 2 hours of him chasing you down the street.
Kidding. It's 3 hours.
Recently made that video? Its been seven months
That wasn't the point whatsoever lol.
Funny enough, the whole son story kinda turned me off too 🤣🤣🤣. What probably could've worked for me is if he thought that was his son and further down in the movie it wasn't or summ
I wanna see Michael bay direct a batman movie
What the hell happened to Martin Lawrence's head?
I still have not finished the first one and never seen the second one... I think I have some homework to do...
PS : I now would like to replace "The Male Gaze" into "The Bay Gaze" that sounds more badass! XD
Rossatron, you make a lot of valid points, and ironically enough, that's why I love Bad Boys for Life more than Bad Boys 2 (which is one of the worst films ever made.).
Just let Bay be a second unit director and we are good to go.
Love your movie but breakdowns.
Thank you! Couldn't agree more!
👌
🤣🤣🤣🤣, I like Michale bay stuff, I wish he kinda tone down on his editing. Sometimes I feel like I'm gonna get a seizure. But when he's filming bad boys, you always feel the intensity
The comedy was there but in a world where we have John Wick & The Raid but I felt the action wasn't impressive at all in my opinion.
"Point Break or Bad Boys 2 ... which one do you want to watch first?"
Which one do you think I’ll prefer? ... You are pulling my leg?

enhh disagree Bad Boys for life feels campy like Lethal Weapon 3
Haha cool
Bad boys for life is a sad movie
People seemed to love this film but I found it so boring it had some funny parts but it was missing that Bayham just me. Bad Boys for life was only successful because people learned Michael Bay wasn’t involved
Will had too much creative control. The only person who could beat him is a younger version of himself. He did the same thing when he made Gemini man. It was a disappointing movie. Gemini not even watching anything other than the trailer
I'm kinda glad he didnt do this bay has lost it as a filmmaker this film was all the good stuff of a bay movie without the baggage lol.
Its a better story, not necessarily a better film.
Sure the movie is way less sleazy and not as shallow, but kinda lost personality for a Fast and Furious retread. Joe Pantolloni was cool
Liked the movie, hated the plot twist and the very ending. Good luck with trying to make people empathize with that character.
He was following his mother's orders so I guess that is a loop hole they could use. It's nowhere near as bad as what the F&F franchise did with Shaw.
11:02 oh gaze.... I heard it as gays 😂
Not to mention that it Ripped off Gemini man...
Reduced budget? Eh bro?
It did though? Bad Boys 2 was 130 million, BBFL was 90 million. And that's with a 17 year period of inflation to further widen the gulf.
@@Rossatron sorry I meant to say I personally didn't see where the quality of the visuals dipped because of the budget my bad lol
Sounds to me like you had to convince yourself to like this movie.
Really? The issue is more that I didn't particularly think much to what came before, so was pleasantly surprised at how effortlessly I *did* like it.
You're wrong. Vanessa Hudgens is not good looking. That's the only thing I would disagree with
@Dope Stuff ENGLISH yep
I wasn't in love with this film. Bad Boys 1 is awesome and 2 is a lot of fun. This one just felt kind of cheap and shallow, even for a Bad Boys film.
I have to disagree, Bad Boys for Life was boring & out of touch with dated humour, it's almost as bad as 6 Underground & the "twist" you could see coming a mile off, hopefully a movie like this is the death knell of this type of action movie for good - looks good though
@Dope Stuff ENGLISH 6 Underground is worse than BBFL, it gave me a head ache, & I could have sworn that 1/3 of 6 Underground was in slo-mo.
Meh
I didn’t like this movie at all, I love the first two, but this one just didn’t work for me
@Cntrol100 its bad because the CGI action scenes and the unnecesary drama they have put in the plot.
Yup, I thot it was shit!.. to forced, and to say the best if the 3 has to be a joke
It was a cool movie, part one was waaaay better to me and funnier.
Everyone is always big on character development but the movies
Bay makes they don’t need supper deep character development all the time. Just enjoy the ride.
@@ryans413 man, you seem real invested.
This movie was trash. Martin takes a backseat for Will Smith's ego trip.
I didn't noticed that
It wasn't great movie But meh
Pretty forgettable movie..
