    The water dependency really is a pain, honestly. I made a Locatah rogue that was aesthetically a humanoid manatee. My plans for her was making her a Mastermind, cutting out all the edge and just being as helpful and cooperative as possible, play a real fish out of water who loved her friends but was coincidentally really good at killing with a sharp seashell... Yeah, none of those things happened. Literally the entirety of my character became looking for water as the DM refused to give me a steady suply and loved doing a lot of "fast forward to" and oops, now I'm on the verge of death. Horribly annoying if the DM isn't willing to help you out with that restriction and doesn't even give you a heads up about it.
    My suggestion was just "let me have a big barrel of water with me I can dip into from time to time, I have good acrobatics so I could probably ride it like a bear on a circus ball" and the answer was "I'll look into it" and then never getting into it.

    One thing to keep in mind for Simic Hybrids. Though it does only affect flavour and has no impact on ability scores and such, the lore states that they are humans, elves, or vedalken that have been modified by magic to gain these animal traits. So you can still use one of those races for the basis of how you look, include it as part of your background, etc. And depending on your DM and the traits you pick, you might be able to sometimes hide your animal traits to blend in as a normal human, elf, or vedalken.
    Also, since they are a race from Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica, and are named for one of the guilds there, if you aren't doing a campaign in Ravnica or themed to Magic: The Gathering and using planeswalking, there's no reason you couldn't reflavour it to change the name, make it unwilling experiments done by the villain (think like Crash Bandicoot's background), and even make it other races that were modified instead of just humans, elves, and vedalken. Again, this only affects flavour and story elements, so if asking your DM about it, specify that, since that won't affect your ability scores or racial traits, so more DMs would be willing to let you technically be a dragonborn based Simic Hybrid or something.

    Vedalken also make amazing clerics, since their extra d4 for the chosen skill and tool can also stack with the d4 from Guidance. It stacks even further if you are a Peace domain cleric, giving you the ability to add _3d4_ to a single ability check. Sure, this also applies to the dragonmark subraces that give a d4 on certain skills but still. Would have loved if they also had the ability to change those proficiencies out when they finish a long rest. It definitely would add to their versatility so much more.

    A quick correction with the Simic Hybrid Feather Fall glide strat: Feather Fall reduces your falling speed to 60 feet per round, and since the glide is based on how far you fall, it reduces the speed of the glide to 120 feet. If you're higher than 500 feet in the air, you could wait a round (or possibly more depending on how high you are) to Feather Fall so you can benefit from that 1000 feet of glide movement.
    Alternatively, if you have a way to endure or prevent massive bludgeoning damage, you can reduce the need to have Feather Fall and just glide from any height at max speed, though this does eliminate it as a level 1 strat

    • @sagatario58
      @sagatario58 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      True, but thats when you look at separating the mechanics from the flavor. For example: the flavor of a Warforged is that they're robotic soldiers given their freedom, but they could be reflavored to be golem, sentient suits of armor, etc. Simic Hybrids do have the unfortunate part of having their name lock them in to their world, but many worlds have mad scientists who'd experiment with magic, or powerful beings who would bless/curse someone with animal like features. (Whether it's a blessing or a curse would depend on their point of view.) So a Hybrid could be someone who ran afoul of a nature God and was cursed, or made a pact to become a GOOlock and the transformation was part of the deal. They don't specifically have to be scientific creations made by splicing peices onto other animals, nut even if they are, they don't specifically have to be tied to Ravnica. You just have to get a bit creative.

Went with grappling appendages even though they're 100% useless on a sorcerer with 8 Strength, just because tentacles are fun.

    Locatha concept: give them a magical breathing apparatus and treat it like a spellcasting focus. You don’t even remember your benefiting from it, until you’ve been captured and are fighting the clock to avoid drying to death.

    Good to see Simic Hybrid getting some love. Manta Glide is bonkers with a good jumper as it effectively doubles your movement so long as you can keep jumping. I used it on an Oath of Glory Paladin for a one shot. The DM had us up against a bunch of archers, which would have been devastating if I couldn't clear 60 feet with my movement alone and then grapple+shove+GWM.

    I've always wanted to make a Vedalkin Arcane Trickster with a single level dip into any class that can pick up Guidance. +7+2d4 bonus to Sleight of Hand and Thieves' Tools from 30ft away at level 4. It's the ultimate pickpocket build. Thief also works if you want to do things the more traditional way.

      yeah I thought really hard about githzerai vs. githyanki, they're both great! You're 100% right in identifying that Githyanki make incredible wizards due to the armor, but I think githzerai make great wizards too, as well as great other classes that get more from a free sheild than from a free jump!

    Thanks for pointing out the Wildhunt Shifter/Barbarian Reckless Attack interaction. So many videos talking abut shfters miss that interaction!
    I think that Wildhunts were underrated as barbarians because the stats weren't great for Barbs before Tasha's came out and let you customise the stat increases.
    I will say that the bonus action to shift is a bit annoying how it competes with the bonus action to rage though.
    Path of the Beast barb with Wildhunt shifter is pure flavour though. Best way to play a werewolf in the game.

    • @oneleghendo5239
      @oneleghendo5239 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Considering your bonus actions are limited as a Barbarian, it’s only 1 round that you’re inconvenienced. My DM lets me shift as initiative is rolled, so I don’t have to deal with that though.

    Simic Hybrid + Rune Knight + their enlarge feature + their gliding wings = grapple enemy, climb up a tree, batista bomb them into the ground and you take 0 damage. you can also proc your runes on the grapple as well to restrain + grapple the enemy while they sit in the crater they just made with their face

    Some of my favorites that few people know about;
    DMG Skeleton; While limited by being an undead and having -4 int and charisma, and being vunrable to bludgeoning damage, Skeletons make BRUTAL zealot barbarians, especially when you get to higher levels and can just rare infinitely to NEVER die.
    Plane shift Naga; While Speed burst is underpowered, when Tasha's got custom linigage, Naga's now make Epic low level monks, with their d6 Constrict that *also* restrains, and their Poisonous bite attack, meaning every bite has a chance to deal 1d4 extra poison damage.

    I'm playing a Grung Artificer, who also has to be emerged in water for 1h like Locathah. I've tacked the problem with Alchemy Jug, which a got from Replicate Magic Item infusion. My boy Ribbit Pottinson just carries around a barrel that he can fill with the jug and use it essentially as a bathtub. Of course this is not the smartest way to take care of water dependency, but it is very fun :D And builds a lot of character.

    My honorable mention: Kalashtar. You have advantage on wisdom saves, physic resistance, immune to effects and spells that require you to be dreaming, and mind link(10 feet x level to a target you can see and you can speak telepathically). A +2 to Wis and +1 to Cha is perfect for Clerics but using Tasha's you can be the scout and relay what you see to a party member at higher levels without worrying about alerting anything near by or spell slots. While clerics do have great wisdom saves, getting advantage on them is even better due to the chance of a low roll to resist fear effects.
    That's just game mechanics mostly, RP wise I had made my backstory of my Kalashtar Cleric to be he was thought of as the prophet and used his "eye glow" feature from their lore for when he's using his connection with his Quoari spirit

    FYI. In Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse many Character Races were put together from diffrent books such as genasi, tortle, the Gith, fairy and many more. But some as Genasi and Gith got rewritten, the fire genasi no longer is the only one with darkvision and it isn't red shades only or the githyanki now can gain proficiency in one skill of your choice and with one weapon or tool of your choice, selected from the Player's Handbook.
