I will never not watch this videos for as long as Ruggs keeps them posted. Thank you Jim.

'A constant renewal of an artist's philosophy outside of their medium of choice is likely to grant their work depth. Moreover, the mining of what has gone before as the source material without outside cross reference or study isn't a particularly long standing methodology. The mindset of David Mazzucchelli as depicted in this video is not only appealing because of his most famed results but also due to his less known missteps and what he gleaned from them. You should be proud for presenting us with this content gentlemen. I look forward to more uploads which I suspect provide considered insight for the layman and no short supply of hopeful amateurs in disciplines within and outside of the form.' - John Clay

Awesome, loving the Mazzucchelli coverage recently! fingers crossed for year one artists edition. Ed & Jim you guys should do a video on Marvels What If? Issue 35, What if Elektra lived. Frank Miller writing/pencilling, Terry Austin inks. Cool to see where Terry zags when Klaus zigs, also got a crazy Ditko furry story!

Would love to see you cover City of Glass. The way that certain sequences transitioned from traditional storytelling to formal experiments with pure symbols just blew my mind when I had first read the book.

Gondola issue: Daredevil #221. Matt investigates Heather Glenn's death from DD #220. Incredible art by Mr Mazzuchelli!

@@johnv3623 DD #220 'The Fog', was the first Daredevil book I ever bought. Up until then, I was reading the Spider-Man books, Fantastic Four and Uncanny X-Men. My young mind was absolutely blown by it! 🤯
DD #220 and #221 got me wanting to be a comic book artist back then.

Actually I find it interesting that it seems overlooked that Frank Miller plotted or wrote ‘Fog’, I bet his attention on Mazzucchelli started getting much more serious during that issue!

You guys do realize how brutal a tease it is to put ‘Mazzucchelli’ and ‘Interview’ in the title, right? ;) Anyways, this interview is so fascinating because of the crossroads Mazzucchelli was at. As much as I admired his courage to leave mainstream comics soon after this, I also think it could be argued that working with Miller earned him the flexibility to do so, and I always wondered what his next move would have been if he and Miller hadn’t crossed paths? I will also, for the record, state that it is my belief that he and Miller’s original intention was to do eight issues of Batman, not four; in other words, follow it up with Batman Year Two and what had been set up in the last few pages of issue 407. And I point to, as proof, the very first ads for ‘Batman Year One’ also said ‘Year Two’. I have proof of this.
Also: another rare gem of Mazzuchelli’s were the series of ‘On The Town’ strips he did for the New Yorker for about a year (?) around 1994-ish, really experimental drawings and fun, ‘Hanging Ryman’ for instance; I remember one was drawn like an architects blue print, another was about seeing ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ in Central Park!

I was talking to Joe Quinones once, and I guess Mazzuchelli taught at RISD for a minute? Either way, Joe took a class under him, and Dave brought in pages from Year One. I nearly slapped his mouth out of sheer jealousy. Also, apparently Mazz kept them all, so...like...someone get Dunbier on the line ASAP.

This is slightly off topic but i wished to have a recolored version of born again as this one, wich is more slik and noirish from the original, holy fuck that would be a nice gift for comic readers
