Use ANY Bluetooth Headphones with Sony PlayStation 5 & PS5 Digital!

  • In this episode, we show you how to use practically ANY Bluetooth headphones or headset with the Sony PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital thanks to the Uberwith Bluetooth 5.0 Adapter.
One of the things that has been a head scratcher for me for a long time is Sony's determination to force consumers to use dongles to take advantage of wireless Bluetooth Headphones on their gaming systems. Dating back to the PS3, the systems used Bluetooth for other forms of communication, however they've locked Bluetooth Audio out for users. Even Sony's own excellent Gold and Platinum headphones required users to plug in a USB dongle to unlock wireless audio.
Enter Uberwith and their Bluetooth 5.0 Adapter for PS5. Designed with simplicity in-mind, for $30 this adapter plugs into the bottom of the DualSense controller via the 3.5mm headphone jack. The face of the adapter has 4 buttons on it, a Mute Button, a Pairing Button which also acts as a power button, and volume up and volume down buttons. The adapter does not tie into any headphone microphone, so as such there's a small opening on the back of the adapter to provide access to the microphone built into the DualSense itself.
One thing I did not expect, but was pleased to see, was that Uberwith outfitted the adapter with its own 200mAh battery. This means that the adapter does not draw power off of the controller itself and it will not reduce your playtime. To charge the battery, which promises 18-hours of playtime, there's a very short USB-A to USB-C cable included. It is important to note that you cannot charge your DualSense controller through this USB-C port; there are no contacts that would transfer power to the charge contacts on the bottom of the controller.
Pairing is fairly simple, whether pairing to a wireless speaker or Bluetooth Headphones. You don't even need to have the adapter plugged into your controller to pair! Simply press and hold the pairing button for a few seconds, set your speaker or headphones to pair, and within a few seconds you should be good to go! If you turn the volume up all-the-way on the adapter and you think the audio is too quiet, make sure you have the headphone volume adjusted to the max in the PlayStation 5's Menu. I did not initially and I thought the audio was too quiet. Once I fully adjusted it, the audio was considerably louder. It wasn't ear-shatteringly loud, but it was very clear, very rich, and I did not notice any lag, delay, or latency.
The fitment along the bottom of the DualSense controller was fairly good. The adapter fit well along the bottom of the controller itself, without any sharp edges or gaps to catch your skin on as you play. I feel I would like it a little more if it was a bit narrower, but overall gameplay and stick movement was not affected or inhibited by use of this adapter.
One thing I did find inconvenient was the fact that, if I was listening to streaming video to not disturb others, when the DualSense auto-powered off I lost audio output. This is where simply having integrated Bluetooth on the system would be superior, if the PS5 was powered on I should get audio, but this is not an option. Note, this is not a problem of the Uberwith adapter, more about the power saving of the PS5 and the DualSense controller itself.
    Why It RoX:
    Only $30
    Connects to any Bluetooth Headset
    Works with both PS5 & PS5 Digital
    Quality sound fidelity
    Separate battery power
    What could be improved:
Sony could just, you know, add Bluetooth Audio like Nintendo just did
    No integrated mic support
    Could be narrower
Does not charge the DualSense controller
Requires the controller to be powered on to output audio
    Should You Buy One?
Let's be honest here, if Sony would just do what Nintendo recently did by adding Bluetooth audio to the Switch, this wouldn't be necessary. Since it is, the Uberwith Bluetooth adapter does a good job and costs less than 1/3 of what Sony's own Pulse 3D headphones do. I prefer the fact that I can use my own existing in-ear headphones vs being forced into over-the-ear designs, and the audio fidelity is quite good. I didn't notice any added lag or latency, and I was able to play or watch video without disturbing others. The fact that it plugs into the DualSense means that if it goes into power saving I lose audio output. While not an issue while playing games, it makes this less than an ideal solution for use while streaming content.

I'll be very blunt about this review.
It was the first video I found for a product like this (I'm very sure there's a bunch of 'knockoffs' of products like this as it's a fairly common use of Bluetooth adapters). That being said, I also try to review each piece of tech I put in my house for quality standards and to make sure I'm not wasting my money on junk. Another admission I have, I didn't watch the whole video. I scrubbed through enough to finally realize this review isn't answering many, many questions I'd have of a singular particular product of this nature.
What's the range of the device? If it really is Bluetooth 4.1/2 or 5.0, you'd be able to tell by leaving your controller in the other room and closing a door and walking away.
What's the battery like? If I game for 2/3 hours each day, how often will I have to charge this thing? PS5 controllers themselves are all over the place depending on if you're playing a PS4 or PS5 game.
Is it something that you actually have used daily and can recommend others to buy for daily use? The premise for the device is absolutely outstanding, but if it has the same problem as a $5 Bluetooth adapter, why would I pay $30 for one that just happens to look pretty on my controller, but still barely works well enough to rely on like the $5 adapters?
You mention it doesn't obstruct the buttons, but obviously there's a place in the underside where your ring and pinky finger sit, that would create a 'pinch' spot that's not there without the accessory. If you have small hands, is it noticable? What if you have chunky fingers? Would it be a deal breaker because the device is so filled with empty air behind plastic that fits the aesthetic design?

Many of these questions are addressed in the write-up, read the more info section for some of your answers.
Range to me as a non-issue because, in theory, you should be within a couple feet of the controller, right? As such using it in another room is pretty unrealistic. It's not designed for you to be able to consume media with from the ps5, it's designed specifically to use during gameplay, if that makes sense.

You always could plug a Bluetooth dongle into your Playstation & use any headset you want. As long as the dongle doesn't come with a disc or requires you to download new drivers. A typical plug-in-&-go dongle will also work just fine.

Is it just me or do we find it very strange that Sony still doesn't support bluetooth headphones with the PlayStation. I've been thinking about it since the release of the PS4. They sell these great ANC headphones, the PS has Bluetooth, the Controller has Bluetooth, but still they don't allow them to connect... It feels like they're forcing you to buy the PSPulse headset instead of rewarding you for buying their other much more expensive product (WH1000XM4 in my case).
The headset I have can be connected with a 3.5mm jack (but the mic won't work), it can be connected as an audio device to my Sony Android TV (but the pairing and switching from TV audio to BT audio and pairing it is a lot of trouble and there's a lot of latency), there are BT receivers available from third parties (but the mic won't work)
Has anyone found a solution yet? And do you think there'll be anytime soon they'll start supporting it?
I've searched multiple subreddits and used multiple keywords for my search but still didnt find any good posts about it, so I am sorry if I am asking a question that has been asked many times before....

Nope, Sony has a history of only allowing Bluetooth devices that they bless. I think we can all read "bless" as, "Companies who make bluetooth devices which quietly paid a licensing fee to Sony, for their bluetooth devices to work with PS consoles".
This is in fact in violation of the legal terms stipulated by the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group), for interoperability with the bluetooth specifications that they develop. According to them, *_ALL_* devices which bear their Bluetooth trademark *_MUST_* be interoperable with *_ALL_* other Bluetooth devices of the same advertised Bluetooth spec or lower.
      *_MUST_* *_MUST_* *_MUST_* *_MUST_* *_MUST!_*
But of course Sony gets to be an exception for some reason.
Would we expect anything less from Sony? The company which once knowingly and wilfully distributed malware to their customers via Sony Music audio CDs? For which they loss a class action lawsuit over.
Sony has a long history of trying to screw the consumer. This is another example which is on-brand for them.

Great video, very informative. I do have a problem with your earphones of choice though.
With RAYCONS all I hear is a lot of BASS which is great if you're into DANCE/CLUB or RAP music. However for people who enjoy any other type of music including Rock & ROLL/COUNTY/JAZZ/ect, I would suggest something with better (ANY) range.
I have a set of Jabra elite. I paid about $80 more than for them but I can choose whether or not I want them to sound all Bass or I can make them sound good, it's up to me. I think it's worth $80 more.
I don't think RAYCONS are good earphones. Just because a famous guy is selling them doesn't make them good.

I primarily listen to a lot of spoken word, TH-cam, videos, talk radio. I think the RayCons are terrific for the price for those applications.
I'll also say I have no idea about RayJay or his music, I've never heard anything he's produced. I bought my first day of RayCons 4 years ago, and I've bought a set for my wife and a 2nd set in recent years.

@@RoXolid Well if you ever switch over to listening to music I strongly recommend a better set. As a musician it's painful to listen to something that has almost no Treble.
I bought a set of RAYCONS because people were pushing them heavily on TH-cam and I was very disappointed when I got them and found that every song was muffled with bass.
As you said, spoken word is fine there's no music involved. But for people who enjoy music with instruments and singing it's not that good.
You mentioned the affordability and I have an issue there because they're not that affordable. As I said you pay a few bucks more and you get a decent piece of equipment.
I think if you're going to spend that kind of money you should spend a few extra dollars and get something decent is all I'm saying.
