Father John Misty kinda knocks it out of the park with this new record of his. It's very colorful, funny, catchy, entertaining. It's definitely going to be one of my favorite singer-songwriter records of 2015. Don't skip this one, I'd say. I hope you're well. What else is going on? What have you been listening to? What's your new fav album?

He said that "True Affection" is the way it is because the lyrics talks about technological age and not being able to communicate organically nowadays, the melody and beat should be inorganic, and it had to be synths and stuff like that.

Also think it's probably the best song on the album and the change in sound dynamic only makes it better and adds another dimension to the album. Quite amazed this song was singled out as being bad, oh well.

  • @ParvulaUniversum

You're missing the point of True Affection, Mr. Fantano. The reason it sticks out like a sore thumb (and is electronic) is because the song is about how true emotion and affection cannot be conveyed through technological means.

I finally bought the physical copy of this last night, all I could find was the CD, but even that was packaged so so well. It fucking came with entirely too in depth (in a good way) "listening exercises" for every song, and the whole thing is an awesome pop up piece of art. Also it came with a really fold out poster of photos and lyrics which I can't live without. kudos to FJM and Subpop for the packaging of this awesome record - even for the CD version. I don't think I've ever been so happy with a physical copy.

Will you, or will you not make a grand, epic list of your favorite albums of all time when we, as a group, get you to 500000 subscribers, or better yet, a million? Sure, you deserve it, but we're not just gonna sit on our asses and give your our preciouse, bloody, sweat filled time for you to say 'Thank You. This Kanye West album gets a decent 4.' No, we need something epic. My suggestions. Firstly, free Cal forever. Burn the whack Cal zone, or any Cal zone. Second, review Kid A. Do it. Just shoot the elephant in the room. Finally, the grand list of your top 50 favorite albums of all time. I don't care if it's going to be 3 hours long. I'll watch it, replay it, and watch it yet again. I'll show it to my mother, I'll show it to my imaginary girlfriend, Annie Clark. I'll sbow it to my cousin who's 2 years old. I don't give a shit if he doesn't understand a word. He's Korean, he's never gonna understand. Oh Anthony whyudothistometano, when will you listen to the people. The people who worship you as a god? WHEN WILL OUR VOICES SHAKE THE HEAVENS AS OUR SCREAMS ARE SO LOUD THAT IT WILL MAKE THE DEVIL PASS OUT FROM FEAR! WHHHHHEEEEEEEENNNNNNN!
Also, good review, will check the album out immediately. Sounds pretty good.

I might be way out in left field on this one, but I honestly saw "True Affection" as his "trollish" humor shining through a bit. I half agree with you about this track being a commentary on the state of our reliance on technology, but I kind of see it as an Andy Kaufman kind of jab at his fans' expectations (not in a disrespectful way, of course). Tillman exudes this kind of humor in his live performances, and I sort of interpreted it as his way of inserting that facet of his humor on a record.
Keep up the great reviews! You should check out Punch Brothers new record "The Phosphorescent Blues"!

I'm curious why you choose not to mention Jonathan Wilson as the producer. Probably had a lot to do with the sound you appreciated.

Honestly, I love True Affection, I really don't know why. Strange Encounter is also very good too.

Please, review The Four Owls - Natural Order, a new LP by a British hip-hop group with a track produced DJ Premier and more dope tracks! It should be released later today (Thursday here already).

*ahhh my fav youtuber has uploaded another vid. Now i can chill out with a cup of tea and see what anthony has to say about this album! Ok now that i have your attention i thumbs DOWN this video!!! screwballtano dropped the ball big time on this one. John misty back in the day had potential, his singing voice was a head turner and his lyrics were insightful about the lifestyle that he led. But this album fell ill to what i refer to as 'expectation standards' This is a term i use to describe someone that has made a good impact and built a solid reputation, but has caved in to the pressure and ultimately failed to match the expectations bestowed upon him. If you've given this comment a read what did you think of it? did you luv it did you hate it? why? what do you think i should comment on next? Jimmy Burt Gaming...comment quality control, forever!*

    Solid review.
One disagreement though: I don't think Bored in the USA sidesteps the love theme at all. It's very much about the fears and anxiety that come with marriage and settling down. It's the mouthful of bitterness to counterbalance the over-the-top sweetness of some of the songs that come before it.

This album, with its' cornucopia of lyrics and soft music set in the background, that feels like it's a score and the David Letterman performance... well it all converges to convey a musical kinda vibe, And by musical, I mean a play on the stage or screen with songs sung by a character. It's all very theatrical. Thanks for your time.

Patrick Mangiaforte haven't seen anyone mention this track yet. I thought it was incredible, especially the live performance La Blogotheque captured.
