Pancake racing is a tradition from Olney (near Milton Keynes) we’ve always been taught it started from when a woman was late for church so in the middle of making her pancake, she ran to the church, frying pan and pancake it hand!
We hold the race every year still with our frying pans :)

It's called 'pancake week', 'butter week' or 'maslenitsa'.

I like fluffy American pancakes and I love European crepes. My favorite is a savory turkey crepe. It's a crepe filled with sliced turkey and has a thick turkey gravy both in and on top of the crepe. Then I like to follow it up with a sweet crepe filled with peaches and topped with whipped cream. They are both to die for. Have a nice Lent!

I had an aunt that participated in a pancake race when I was growing up. I believe they were still living in London at the time, so probably a neighborhood event but I do remember seeing clips of pancake races in villages around the country on TV.

As Mikhail Shapiro said before, in Russia and in some post-Soviet countries during the week in spring people eat a lot of pancakes with different condiments, like butter, jam or anything you like. These psncakes are flat as well, and very delicious. We don't run with them though.

Mum always put corn in the batter and we ate them with sausages. We did the syrup and butter ones too but on pancake Tuesday, it's more like a 'meal' so we did the corn ones. Last night, my 'tester' to make sure the pan was just right was covered with Little Friskies Indoor Sea Selection so kitty got to have a pancake, too.

Hi, Joel and Lia. I've heard of the pancake race in other parts of England, but I've never heard of it in London before.
Also, I've heard other people try to explain the difference between British and American pancakes. They usually list all the ingredients that are in each. But I don't need a recipe - I could google that. Joel's explanation was the best I've ever heard - simple and to the point.

Joe, and Lia, that a wonderful tradition!
I DO wish that someone would create working Transporter Stations so that we could beam over to your market for some hot crepes! Yummmmy!! Sounds wonderful and such a joyous way to begin Lent. Although, sigh, we Yanks (even those not born north of the Mason/Dixon Line) do love our pancakes as often as possible. My son-in-law and grandson make crepes every Saturday morning for my daugher This makes it a great bonus to visit them for a weekend. I'm only able to make the fluffy kind, yet they're still great. Yum.
I hope that you weren't as cold as you looked. Thanks so much for sharing!

Pancake races absolutely ARE a british thing and also some local traditions….In Scarborough the town turns out to skip - on the foreshore the road is closed and people use ropes from the boats stretched across the road to make their skipping ropes - this is an old tradition.

I remember watching a youtube vid with an American and a Brit having a pancake contest. The American made the American style pancake and the Brit made the crepe style. They invited a bunch of their Brit friends over to taste them. All the Brits were blown away by the American style pancakes over the crepe style. I am a waffle or French toast guy so it does not matter to me. Just thought it was funny.

Trinidad has Carnival!! Where tourists and celebs come every year to fete(party) and have a fun time! It's also a multicultural island! Tobago is its twin island so it's Trinidad and Tobago. Tobago is where you could go to lime(relax and chill), of course there are many places in Trinidad to lime!😂
You could talk about their slang/accent, cultures, food and compare it to England.

We don't put baking soda in American pancakes. It's baking powder that makes them fluffy. Mine are made with flour, baking powder, eggs, milk, vanilla and, cinnamon and sometimes mini chocolate chips

    • @firstenforemost
      @firstenforemost 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You're only half right. Baking Powder is part baking soda and part cream of tartar (an acid). An acid is required to activate baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate aka bicarb). You can make fluffy pancakes without using baking powder if you use baking soda plus something acidic, like using buttermilk or putting in a little bit of vinegar with your milk.

It's an all-you-can eat breakfast of pancakes and all the trimmings to help raise money for their group. The members of the group prepare, serve and clean up and they are usually held at a meeting/event hall with a kitchen.

I'm from Canada and I made pancakes with blueberries and pecans with orange zest in the batter. I serve them with lots of Maple syrup and a dash of cinnamon. YUM!! P.S. I'm waiting to hear of your decision about where your next "work" destination will be!!!! GO JOEL & LIA!!!!!!!!

I don't really like American pancakes much. I can't find anyone near me who knows how to make a crepe, let alone what it is now.

doing some more research would have been good to find out if pancakes races were tradition or not nationwide....its great to be cute and fluffy in front of the camera but how awesome it would be for you guys if you actually new what you were talking about....take your video making a step further...make it better!!! good luck!

Wait... I thought you were going to choose one, show it to us and then eat it. How can you do a video about pancakes and then not show one to us?

"Why would you do that?" What does this sentence mean? I often hear this sentence but I am not sure what it means.
