I think the problem with Justin’s writing boils down to the fact that it’s already run it’s course and hasn’t evolved at all, his humour style is basically a blend of “everyone’s an asshole”, stream of conscience rambling and a few well written moments. It’s like gross out humour for the cynical, it’s why I think Rick and Morty did so well in its initial seasons and slowly lost its shine over time.

Like whenever he has a character that appears to be friendly or heroic or nice, the joke is either going to be that they’re actually really evil, disgusting or an asshole or they die in a horrific way or suffer because that’s the punchline.
He does scripted comedy like Rick and morty and solar opposites well but when it comes down to his games they all seem ad-libbed and he just drones on and on while it was funny in that VR game this time around its cringey and absolutely lost me after 30 minutes of gameplay I honestly just play it muted.
My problem with the game is there’s so many points where I can see that they’re parodying an annoying/bad game mechanic like the scanning section but the punch line is just that they’re going to make you do it anyways
There's actually a setting that lets you dial down how much chatter your guns, knife, and enemies make throughout encounters. That should be telling enough how grating it can all get.

It's insane that the skits where you put up out-of-context punchlines from the simpsons for less than a second is funnier then the full on uninterrupted minute of swearing and awkward voice-acting trying to act like something that isn't funny is comedy gold preceding it.

It sounded exactly like you said, that they just went in with minimal script and improvised. All that stuttering makes me think they're making up stuff on the spot. It does happen a lot in his work though so it might just be that. Roiland works with Rick and Morty because there are other writers and people to keep it tighter. I would say that show has gone down hill too though.

Justine Rowland is the type of guy who really needs some restrictions to shine. His "improvisational style" is pretty shit most of the time. He really needs someone to hold him back and organize his ideas a lot more. A lot like how George Lucas needs people around him to make his ideas come to life.
This game is a complete turnoff for me and the only reason I even cared to look into it was by chancing upon the soundtrack on TOBACCO's bandcamp page. He's an incredible artist and while I'm not surprised his style, even his presentation, would get tagged for this I just wish it was for something else that wasn't so darn annoying. In an era where games just get released without been full developed and everything is a remaster or a remake of something created like 20 years ago, this game is pretty decent and well received, at least for me, I mean, the city on this game looks much more alive than Night City in Cyberpunk. This games makes me remind of all the great fun hours I got with Conker's Bad Fur Day, I hope they keep trying new IPs
The humor in this game is aimed towards those teenage kids that get their personality from trending memes. Trust me, I work with one of them. My grandfather died 2 weeks ago and this kid literally could not find the strength to NOT tell me edgy jokes about my dead grandfather, the day after he died. All while apologizing for saying them. I don’t mind offensive humor one bit, but this kid has no sense of self control when it comes to his “edgy” personality. It is a burden to his own reputation.

Unless it's important story dialog all their stuff is usually improv, that's how Justin, Zach Hadel, and Michael Cusack do their comedy as well as a lot of the people they hire. Just look at Smiling Friends or Rick and Morty and listen to background characters or stuff like Interdimensional Cable

15:18 In Personal Opinion, Knifey was used horribly. He's a great Character and people were excited for him, yet you can't actually fucking use him. You use him to tether and to parry, that's it. He takes a backseat and is mostly just gone, until you beat a Boss and use him to take proof of the bounty. It's a shame since they could've just made him a Gatlin, or at least function the same way. His main attack is that he just Stabs, his "Trick Hole" Power is that he does a 3-Quick Stab into an Enemy, and he could still Tether and Parry. But nope, he's just there for a really awkward-looking Takedown animation.
First two full seasons of R&M were actually really funny but it all went bad since the 3rd (except couple of eps from that season).. by the 4th one it got extremely tiresome and also by then the show got ultrapopular and Justin's output maintained shit ever since. Merry Christmas, all.
I tried to play High On Life. I just can't. Not for more than a handful of minutes, anyway, then it quickly begins to drive me mad. The thing is, for people who are fans of this style of comedy (if I can really even call it comedy) the dialogue is the sole reason to play this game. The gameplay itself isn't bad, it just isn't very great either. Its nothing you can't get from any other first person shooter game from the last few years or so. To be honest, I didn't expect to like it. However, I didn't expect for it to wear on me so quickly either. If I could go the rest of my life without having to ever hear the Morty voice ever again, I could die a happy man.
Let’s be honest here. This game is made for kids. It’s a mature game made for children. Only children will think this game is funny. I can imagine myself loving this as a 12-year-old boy.

I think this is why comedic games don't really work like you'd think. Games are way too long and filled with ambient downtime for it to hold up from start to finish. Most people don't watch an entire season of Rick and Morty or South Park back to back, it's tiring.

It just has to be willing to backseat to gameplay sometimes. You can't have 24/7 jokes every second. You can wrap gameplay elements in comedic terms but they still have to ultimately contain solid gameplay.

The writing was a masterclass comedy and the gameplay, while very straightforward, was also great and the characters actually weren't talking non stop during gameplay plus it incorporated humor into the gameplay in interesting ways (like the shark gun which fires land swimming sharks that do about what you expect)
Nah Justin has range he just rarely uses it which is frustrating. Lemongrab is that Morty voice to an extreme, shrill shrieking and creepy mumbling. Rick Sanchez is actually unique because he does kinda sound like some drunk father figure.
Everyone forgets about Lemongrab yet he's my favorite character out of all the ones he's ever voiced. I honestly think he purposely reuses a lot of voices (Rick, Morty and that constantly used background character voice in Rick and Morty) because they're easily recognizable and the fans love em. I not only don't mind him always reusing them, it brings me this weird sense of mental comfort and makes the dialogue more funny because of my association of them with R&M. Especially that background character voice lol, it never gets old and always cracks me up.

I really want Justin Roiland to write something without voicing in it. I think he's really good at writing animated comedy 9 times out of 10, but the delivery is destroyed by half of the script being performed by one of his two voices.

Roiland genuinely seems to understand how to write stories and characters (most of the time), but he constantly undermines his own work with "self-aware" meta bullshit. It's like he can't just a story be its own thing without smashing the 4th wall and loudly proclaiming "THIS IS FICTION". He also needs to cut the ad-lib crap. It kills the pace, tone, and overall consistency of the work 9 times out of 10.

I'm 4 hours into the game and i've laughed maybe 5 times, and all of those times the jokes were the least obnoxius ones. The rest of the "jokes" are the characters describing tropes or telling you what to do 50 times a second. I like some of the platforming and the gameplay is competent, if it weren't for that i'd be having a horrible time. (I'm playing from a shared library i wouldn't pay for this)

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
Portal 2 had some of the funniest dialogues, especially when Wheatley was talking at any one point. Its one of those things where you gotta understand your audience, and not baby feed them the jokes.

I think one of the major problems with Justin's writing is that his jokes could be good, like take for instance the city you destroy That couldve been a really funny joke but he doesnt know how to pull back and let the joke hit he just keeps going on and on and it ends up killing what couldve been an actually funny joke Like for the kid, if the kid was just annoying and shit and you just shot him, pure silence and maybe a look from your gun wouldve been infinitely more funny than the drawn out sequence they went with
Yeah, for instance the end joke where they get covered in goop. I think it would've hit more if the gun just gagged and then vomited all over the player's arm since the face is aimed backwards. That'd work because of just the spontaneity of it, and also the absurdity of a gun vomiting. If you wanted to extend it you could make it so they have to cover themselves again because of the vomit, and then the next time the player flips the gun to face the other direction while the gun vomits, possibly also including a "accidental emissions" joke where the gun fires while facing towards the player.
This is 100% right. It makes me cringe when jokes aren't allowed to land by themselves, it's like the assumption is we're stupid if they have to be explained directly afterwards, it's like you don't even get chance to hear the punch line.

If you can ignore the constant talking it's acceptable, but for me, Journey to the Savage Planet, Borderlands (probably 3 or Wonderlands) or Desync would just do a better job at what this attempts

This is what happens when a writer become successful with a show and then thinks that everything that craps out of his mouth is gold.
It sounded exactly like you said, that they just went in with minimal script and improvised. All that stuttering makes me think they're making up stuff on the spot. It does happen a lot in his work though so it might just be that. Roiland works with Rick and Morty because there are other writers and people to keep it tighter. I would say that show has gone down hill too though.
Justin has one character and one joke, but I'm obviously just not smart enough to get it.

Justine Rowland is the type of guy who really needs some restrictions to shine. His "improvisational style" is pretty shit most of the time. He really needs someone to hold him back and organize his ideas a lot more. A lot like how George Lucas needs people around him to make his ideas come to life.
It's true that good artists *NEED* to be held back a bit to shine. If not it's just unfiltered nonsense that only one person gets.

This game is a complete turnoff for me and the only reason I even cared to look into it was by chancing upon the soundtrack on TOBACCO's bandcamp page. He's an incredible artist and while I'm not surprised his style, even his presentation, would get tagged for this I just wish it was for something else that wasn't so darn annoying.
This Rick and Morty blabbermouth writing trend has got to go. If quality high IQ comedy is scatological nihilism taking the form of a barrage of expletives, stutters, and repetitions intended to fill the gaps between a bong rippers thought processes as he sits on his filthy couch telling himself that God is dead and he's really fucking smart for thinking so, I'd rather be utterly humorless.
In an era where games just get released without been full developed and everything is a remaster or a remake of something created like 20 years ago, this game is pretty decent and well received, at least for me, I mean, the city on this game looks much more alive than Night City in Cyberpunk. This games makes me remind of all the great fun hours I got with Conker's Bad Fur Day, I hope they keep trying new IPs

The humor in this game is aimed towards those teenage kids that get their personality from trending memes. Trust me, I work with one of them. My grandfather died 2 weeks ago and this kid literally could not find the strength to NOT tell me edgy jokes about my dead grandfather, the day after he died. All while apologizing for saying them. I don’t mind offensive humor one bit, but this kid has no sense of self control when it comes to his “edgy” personality. It is a burden to his own reputation.
Aand the guy who's responsible for this game quit the company and got fired from his animation show. Damn...
7:45 Yeah, that's...that's pretty much exactly what they are doing. Unless it's important story dialog all their stuff is usually improv, that's how Justin, Zach Hadel, and Michael Cusack do their comedy as well as a lot of the people they hire.
Just look at Smiling Friends or Rick and Morty and listen to background characters or stuff like Interdimensional Cable

Edit: I actually really like this game, it's fun! Not all the jokes land but most of them are good for a chuckle at least. It's lighthearted and fun. I've never seen Rick and Morty so I'm not biased.

It’s like an issue of gameplay and animation being good but ruined by being stuck in 2010 tumblr dialogue based humor.
15:18 In Personal Opinion, Knifey was used horribly. He's a great Character and people were excited for him, yet you can't actually fucking use him. You use him to tether and to parry, that's it. He takes a backseat and is mostly just gone, until you beat a Boss and use him to take proof of the bounty.
It's a shame since they could've just made him a Gatlin, or at least function the same way. His main attack is that he just Stabs, his "Trick Hole" Power is that he does a 3-Quick Stab into an Enemy, and he could still Tether and Parry. But nope, he's just there for a really awkward-looking Takedown animation.
First two full seasons of R&M were actually really funny but it all went bad since the 3rd (except couple of eps from that season).. by the 4th one it got extremely tiresome and also by then the show got ultrapopular and Justin's output maintained shit ever since.

I just can't. Not for more than a handful of minutes, anyway, then it quickly begins to drive me mad.
The thing is, for people who are fans of this style of comedy (if I can really even call it comedy) the dialogue is the sole reason to play this game. The gameplay itself isn't bad, it just isn't very great either.
Its nothing you can't get from any other first person shooter game from the last few years or so.
To be honest, I didn't expect to like it.

The irony in it is, if you walk away mid sentence, they dont continue their dialogue like any other game, they actually comment on how rude you are and shut up.

I think this is why comedic games don't really work like you'd think. Games are way too long and filled with ambient downtime for it to hold up from start to finish. Most people don't watch an entire season of Rick and Morty or South Park back to back, it's tiring.

@@BlueZirnitra Stick of Truth is actually a pretty decent game, in part because it had the bones of a real video game underneath it all. Comedy can work in video games. It just has to be willing to backseat to gameplay sometimes. You can't have 24/7 jokes every second. You can wrap gameplay elements in comedic terms but they still have to ultimately contain solid gameplay.

The writing was a masterclass comedy and the gameplay, while very straightforward, was also great and the characters actually weren't talking non stop during gameplay plus it incorporated humor into the gameplay in interesting ways (like the shark gun which fires land swimming sharks that do about what you expect)

Nah Justin has range he just rarely uses it which is frustrating.
Lemongrab is that Morty voice to an extreme, shrill shrieking and creepy mumbling.
Rick Sanchez is actually unique because he does kinda sound like some drunk father figure.
Everyone forgets about Lemongrab yet he's my favorite character out of all the ones he's ever voiced. I honestly think he purposely reuses a lot of voices (Rick, Morty and that constantly used background character voice in Rick and Morty) because they're easily recognizable and the fans love em. I not only don't mind him always reusing them, it brings me this weird sense of mental comfort and makes the dialogue more funny because of my association of them with R&M. Especially that background character voice lol, it never gets old and always cracks me up.

I couldn't even finish watching this review. How anyone finds this bullshit funny really makes me feel like the alien. Juvenile man child humour. Doesn't need to be pretentious or the "200 IQ" humour just something of actual substance with even a small amount of thought put in. Screaming and talking constantly is not humour, it's Ghostbusters 2016.

I really want Justin Roiland to write something without voicing in it. I think he's really good at writing animated comedy 9 times out of 10, but the delivery is destroyed by half of the script being performed by one of his two voices.
His writing is actually good but it's not fun hearing him use the same voice over and over again, I actually used to like Rick and morty, and it's immersion breaking just hearing the same voice

Roiland genuinely seems to understand how to write stories and characters (most of the time), but he constantly undermines his own work with "self-aware" meta bullshit. It's like he can't just a story be its own thing without smashing the 4th wall and loudly proclaiming "THIS IS FICTION".
He also needs to cut the ad-lib crap. It kills the pace, tone, and overall consistency of the work 9 times out of 10.
Justin Roiland isn’t even bad at telling jokes- they can land quite often. It’s just that in his games, for some reason he insists on 1,000 of them being told every minute, and that makes every good one a *lot* less funny.
Still, at least they were aware enough to make an option to lower all the fucking talking. Those voice actors had to have gotten a fucking massive paycheck, I swear.

I'm 4 hours into the game and i've laughed maybe 5 times, and all of those times the jokes were the least obnoxius ones. The rest of the "jokes" are the characters describing tropes or telling you what to do 50 times a second. I like some of the platforming and the gameplay is competent, if it weren't for that i'd be having a horrible time.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

Portal 2 had some of the funniest dialogues, especially when Wheatley was talking at any one point. Its one of those things where you gotta understand your audience, and not baby feed them the jokes.

The “jokes” in the game bundles down to “this thing won’t happen” and then the thing happens, swearing, and repeating the punch line of the joke over and over again.

I think one of the major problems with Justin's writing is that his jokes could be good, like take for instance the city you destroy
That couldve been a really funny joke but he doesnt know how to pull back and let the joke hit he just keeps going on and on and it ends up killing what couldve been an actually funny joke
Like for the kid, if the kid was just annoying and shit and you just shot him, pure silence and maybe a look from your gun wouldve been infinitely more funny than the drawn out sequence they went with
Yeah, for instance the end joke where they get covered in goop. I think it would've hit more if the gun just gagged and then vomited all over the player's arm since the face is aimed backwards. That'd work because of just the spontaneity of it, and also the absurdity of a gun vomiting. If you wanted to extend it you could make it so they have to cover themselves again because of the vomit, and then the next time the player flips the gun to face the other direction while the gun vomits, possibly also including a "accidental emissions" joke where the gun fires while facing towards the player.
This is 100% right. It makes me cringe when jokes aren't allowed to land by themselves, it's like the assumption is we're stupid if they have to be explained directly afterwards, it's like you don't even get chance to hear the punch line.

@@jonatanrobledo9812 It's the classic comedic technique of telling so many jokes so rapidly that the audience doesn't have a chance to realize that none of them are funny. Contrary to what some believe the first two seasons of rick n morty were not written like that, they showed restraint and it played to Justin's strengths. He's a talented actor, he just needs to be kept far, FAR away from a keyboard.

I mean I kinda enjoying High on Life and I'm a Borderlands 3 mega stan but I can get that. Still annoying to me when BL3's writing is booed but I still get the criticism.

This is like that "cursed gun" quest in Borderlands 2, a gun so horrible that it drove multiple wielders to insanity. Turns out it's just a gun that screams at you. This game is like that gag gun, but done unironically, for several hours.

If you can ignore the constant talking it's acceptable, but for me, Journey to the Savage Planet, Borderlands (probably 3 or Wonderlands) or Desync would just do a better job at what this attempts
This reminds me of the opening 30-minute dialogue for New Vegas's Old World Blues expansion, only unskippable and stretched to 10 hours

I quite like Rick & Morty, but whenever I see something else from the creator I always get the feeling that the guy is a one trick pony. He pretty much only writes Rick & Morty but in a different setting.
