Originally the Sanskrit term "dhyāna" was rendered into Chinese using the following characters, 禪那 (chan na). This is an approximation of saying the Sanskrit word, dhyāna. Later the "na" was dropped which then became Chan (禪) and in Japanese, "Zen". Chan is not a sect (= dissenting religious body). It is a zong (宗), hence, 禪宗 (chan zong). Zong is the Chinese rendering of Sanskrit, siddhānta which pertains to realization. Dhyāna, I forgot to add, is closer to the English word intuition. Intuition is the the act of coming to direct knowledge without reasoning or inferring. (Much thanks to The Zennist)

Just because it is inspired and based on what came before doesn't mean it isn't dissenting. It obviously isn't going to reject everything but it does reject certain foundational principles in such a way to be uniquely Chinese.
