- Holler down the Hollow 2014 ... all star bluegrass band featuring Chuck Prophet, covering Lou Reed's Sweet Jane at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Video is by the event videographers; I'm just making it easier to find. (Some copyright owner flagged this, but TH-cam says it's not a "copyright strike" so I'm leaving it up. If the owner wants it removed, of course I will; I'm not monetizing it in any way.)

Great Version of a Classic Americana Song - RIP Lou Reed 🙏
First day of 2024 and I found this gem. Fantastic.
I doubt that Lou ever imagined his songs being covered by a bluegrass style band, but these guys did it justice. Even cranky old Lou would smile at this.
Loved the video with Cowboy Junkies back in the late 80's'
This is an epic cover of "Sweet Jane"! They nailed it! They even included the "missing bridge"! Respect! 👍👍
Heavenly wine and roses
After all these years I’d never heard that bit.
@@chasbodaniels1744 there's a beautiful cover by The Cowboy Junkies, where the singer even makes up a few lines,
& she was stoked to hear that Lou Reed heard their version & was impressed
Allison brown on banjo
@@mindsigh4Margo Timmins has a great voice! I hear that the Cowboy Junkies' version was in fact Reed's favorite. Robert Earl Keen borrowed Timmins to work with him on his late 90s album "Picnic".
“Jane is in her vest.
Me, I’m in a bluegrass band.”
I recognized that voice immediately. Chuck Prophet! What an awesome version of an amazing song.
Thanks
A tribute to Lou, for sure ! Brilliant blue grass version of Sweet Jane, love it !
And a Jim Carrol reference
Best version I’ve ever heard….even beats Mott The Hoople😊
Listen to the Cowboy Junkies' cover.
Wonderful Lou Reed cover with so talented musicians. Good idea to enrich the song with the banjo and the mandolin!
If that don't make you smile nothing will. Love the banjo with that song. Most songs don't need more cowbell they need more banjo!
Lou Reed wrote some GREAT songs.
Music is universal. No boundaries or borders.
They nailed it and that fiddle was awesome 😎
Lou would be proud
Thank you, TH-cam, for letting this stay up.
Awesome! I think Lou would have loved this version. steve
+Steve Hunter Good to hear that! Your intro on SJ was genius and helped make that tune my all time fave.
Many thanks.
He loved Cowboy Junkies version so why not this one.
@@milocat007 best intro in rock n roll ever ....no 1 ... hooked first time i brought that album home ... whole album is so under rated ...
There is no song that can't be enhanced by a banjo.
Particularly by Allison Brown.
I always got a kick out of Gary Larson’s notion that banjos and accordions were the instruments everyone took a dim view of. They are two of my favorite and these people really did a great job with this classic.
Neil Young's Old Man was enhanced but I get the point. Even Dueling Banjos suffered .. should have been electric guitars and harmonicas.
Exactly and same goes about Chuck Prophet
Or a mandolin!
Nice cover guys.Lou will be impressed.💯👍💯
I could listen to this all day.... 🎶
And I kind of am.....
beautiful version of a beautiful song, foot tapping straight away
I bet Lou would have loved this. It's great when a band can make a song their own. It's not the original. But, it's a damn good new version.
Qué versión tan bonita de Sweet Jane! Bravo!
The guys got a great voice for this
Well said Timothy..cheers from new Zealand..hope your having a jar or 2 listening to this great song .💯🇮🇪🍻
@@noelrogan4058 he sounds alot like lou I listened to all of lou's stuff back when it first came out. Still do. This song is on my guitar lesson list. Two chords. Hello from 721 south main street abbeville sc usa. Tell Burt Munro I said hi.
@@noelrogan4058 I like listening to once good times with a jar this spell check won't let me spell in x cess . Chit
Chuck Prophet be the man!
I listen to this cover all the time. It's really really good.
Didn't think I would, but I Really like This! Sweet! ❤️
Best cover ever!
This Song works on any Style . R.I.P. Lou
I wonder if Dwight Yokum ever covered it? I'll bet he would also do a great job.
Pretty darned great!
Add:
Best version I’ve heard.
True to the original.
Thank you.❤❤
Brilliant! Love bluegrass and ‘Sweet Jane’.
Very well sung - sounds like Lou.
This is a great version to a great song … listen to it all the time!
Really love that banjo - and a great version - was worried they might speed it up a whole lot Really good version, and what a line up. Just a really nice song - with great players, and they didn't try and shoehorn it too much into the bluegrass idiom, loved it.
Mott The Hoople also speeded it up.
What an homage!!!!
Sweet version. Congratulations!
Cool Chuck does great covers
wow---blown away--so good man,so good
Rocking Bluegrass is the Coolest Music , Especially Live. Keep On Trucking Guy's and Gals.
Fukn fantastic cover ... miss ya lou ...
sweet, very sweet
Made my day to hear this
This was very inspirational
Cool rendition. RIP Lou
Like heroine there isn't any, close is still too far.
Being a bluegrass and VU/Lou Reed fan, I absolutely love this. ❤️
Pretty cool, reminds me of something seldom seen would do.

My friend and I saw Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for the first time in August altho I've been a fan since the 70's. Their third and final encore - they did "The Weight" and it was phenomenal.
PS - Love Seldom Scene.
Great tribute, beautifully done folks, miss you Lou ...
This is 1B after the original. Can't stop watching this
Awesome version, great singer keeps that cool edge
That was quite a send up! I'm glad I got to hear it!
When a cover is justified....AMEN
Thanking Steve Simels for turning me on to this very "to the bone" and original version. Love it!
Steve Simels who wrote album reviews for Stereo Review magazine back in the '70"s?
Fantastic version of this beauty, Love it,
Brilliant cover version and a great band.
Kudos they didn't speed it up to a break-neck tempo, most BG bands think they need to do that.
Absolutely nailed it, I was never into BlueGrass until I heard this. Hell yeah!
Wonderful ! Thank you so much !
Good gracious! Fantastic!
That was an awesome version 👍🏼👍🏼
Now that's how you do a cover song.
This song never gets old
Nice cover! I’m hooked!
Love this version Lou Reed would be proud.
excellent cover job, great lead singer
Much better than i thought it would be
Dude. Thanks so much for sharing.
Chuck is the MAN!
That kicked butt!
"Those were different times."
Molto bravi, tutti, complimenti...
Doesn't get much better.👍
Très bonne reprise, avec, en prime, une femme au banjo, ce qui est plutôt rare ... Merci pour ce partage :-)
vous êtes les bienvenus
I know this video is old but first time I seen nice job great cover
I really, really love this!!! It made me happy!!😁😁😁😁
Best cover yet. Gorgeous song 🎧
parafrasing Lou's words, at some point in his life: I don't care what Lou or Andy would have thought about this! That's me and I like it!
Bluegrass is punk...
Well bluegrass is to old timey as speed metal is to rock "n" roll. And although this version kicks it hard and is played with bluegrass instrumentation and I love it dearly,, it still doesn't really feel much like a bluegrass song. Heavy downbeat rhythm is not exactly the heart of a straight ahead bluegrass song. All that being said, I love this cover!
YEAH! Simply awesome.
Rocked it✌️❤️
Thanks for this post
Excellent cover!
Excellent cover! Somewhere Lou is tapping his feet and snapping his fingers RIP
Excellent!!
Cool version 🤘
Oh man, GREAT stuff! Thanks for sharing!
f-me this was great..fantastic......thanks
I love it!
Someone once said “there is no song that can’t be enhanced by a banjo” … (now singing to tempo of this ‘Sweet Jane’)
☪️🕎⛎♒️ … that’s so true … to not do … EVERYTHING without banjo strings … … …. just ain’t a good thing.
[Fun stuff, thanks for the post]
well done - thanks for posting
Wow. That was and would have been a pleasant surprise.
Best music in America at hardly strictly bluegrass!
Easy breezy rendition, so enjoyable
I'm thinking Sweet Jane is the most covered song ever and rightly so.
fantastic
one cool cover
Chuck I still love you. (Of course.)
Great cover.
Awesome!
Check out Cowboy Junkies version which Lou said is his favorite
Lou died in 2013, he never heard this 2014 performance.
Great cover...cannot believe a bluegrass audience went for this..but damn outstanding cover
I believe there's a lot of us that are always looking for and finding something unique, something different to listen to, something that is the only thing that will scratch a particular musical itch. I like many kinds of music from the familiar and mainstream to the off-grid. This number hits the spot, and has scratched an itch I didn't know I had.
Hardly Strictly.... Its San Francisco Blue Grass
Love it !
Great job guys
Fabulous!
