Frank Ticheli (born January 21, 1958 in Monroe, Louisiana) is an American composer of orchestral, choral, chamber, and concert band works. He lives in Los Angeles, California, where he is a Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California.[1] He was the Pacific Symphony's composer in residence from 1991 to 1998, composing numerous works for that orchestra. A number of his works are particularly notable, as they have become standards in concert band repertoire.
I love the bass clarinet part on this song...it's muh favorite! :) It's just too bad that my band may not play it though, cuz I reallly lurvs this song :(
I miss playing this song :| we played it in high school for concert season but we didn't even play it >:| I was so mad because I played bass clarinet on this song and it was epic! yeah... anyways :3
@pa5436 Yeah I was going to say, the only rating level I've known is 1-6. I played this piece my jr. year of high school. As principal Alto, some of those notes above the staff like E to F# were a PAIN to get in tune for State.
I guess it was okay, since the bass clarinet I was using was broken and it spent half the season in the shop, so I had play third part clarinet on it most of the season :S
It's not badly written. Understand that some of Ticheli's works are meant to be used by middle schools/ beginning bands. Can't expect anything too extravagant.
@nicnicoleify Well each instrument has their own sound. I actually hated how I sounded my first year of playing oboe, it was really loud and obnoxious, but after many years, I've become a much better player and I've grown to LOVE the oboe sound, it's very difficult to control the oboe sound correctly so it doesn't sound squawky. Also, since you play flute, of course the part might not sound as good on flute. But different people have different preferences and I won't judge you on yours :)
Hm... you know, I've heard a lot of bashing this piece, yet in all honesty, I just think it sounds.... obscure, but it's not a bad piece.... but you gotta have the right instruments. e.g. when ur the only trombone player it's not very fun to play
well, if you look at his conductor's score cover.....and i dun see how it's supposed to have "beauty"....and this song is not poorly written, its just that you don't like it
2:04 my favorite and best trumpet 1 part.

Yeah, oboe is definitely a bit hard to get the hang of :) It takes some practice, but the end result is nice!
