The Britten cadenza is a marvel in itself and gives Rostropovich a chance to show off his chops; for those who don’t like it, there are other recordings by him with other cadenza.

Although many people in the comments disagree with me, I think the Britten cadenza was actually quite wonderful. It showed off Rostropovich's virtuosity and was a breath of fresh air from the very classical feel of haydn. It was interesting!

to be honest.. the cadenza is a nightmare. you know... people are less sensitive now then in Haydn's time as for as musical inputs. In Haydn times if you would play in minor key, people would be sad and scared. If you would play anything above that, like altered chord for example, they would be scared to death. If you listen to classical music, you need to adjust your sensitivity according to that. If you listen Shostakovich for example (and I never do so) you have to turn your musical sensitivity completely off. So this cadenza is like 3 minutes of Hitchkok's horror inside romantic telenovel. If you understand what I mean. It is unbareable for real music audience and despite Rostropovich was a friend of Britten, this time he made it really wrong. Anyway, this recording is because of orchestra so poor that it can't hurt anybody much more...

Zack Sears it's the one by Benjamin Britten I personally dislike it for stylistic reasons.

It really doesn’t fit with the Haydn at all...

it's quite funny how the Japanese orchestra plays the Haydn - very precise, very detailed... but at the wrong tempo and Rostropovich's entrance smashes the whole orchestra like a tank at full speed against a paper wall.
The Japanese orchestras are much better now, but this historical recording... is really fun to watch. It feels like amateur performance with 1st class soloist.

Yes! thanks for spotting. I laughed. I think it is how rigid the orchestra that made this happen. Rostropovich's face before his entrance: 😮‍💨
