  • Building a properly hardcore convertible from a conventional front-engined coupe ought to be impossible. But AMG knows a thing or two about impossible. Dan Prosser considers the result.

Nice review. I disagree about the feeling of comfort - I get used to it right away. It’s one of those cars that makes you feel confident and at one with the car from the first minute.

All sport cars companies like to market their cars are based on their F1 racing tech. Have you ever seen an F1 car with a roof? That's the question I always answer with when I'm asked why I love roofless cars so much. If you have ever owned a convertible, I have an SL55 AMG Renntech. I don't care about track times and how much faster my buddy went around the track because he has a roof. It's a moot point. Ferrari chops the tops of most of their road cars because people like myself love and buy them. You hear that glorious music of the engine more. You smell the exhaust and nature around. The driving experience simply can't be duplicated. It's also safer than cruising around on my Ducati. So tired of the no roof argument on super cars. Can it just go away like skinny jeans on men please?

I understand what you mean about contradictions but here is my take. I own very powerful convertibles and get shit from my friends because they are supposed to be horrid cars because they have no roof. So here’s my thing, what do all these powerful sports cars try to emulate? They get their technology and of course emulate F1 race cars, considered as pure race track tools and when was the last time you’ve seen an F1 car with a roof on it? Convertibles give you the thrill of speed, the sound of speed along with the wind in your hair and the sun in your face. So to me the AMG GTR convertible is of the closest cars you can drive to an F1 race car. Ferrari and Lamborghini spiders too for that matter.

Amazing car, but I still don’t understand the market for it? If you’re buying an AMG GTR, that is a track focused performance car, and then to make a roadster edition that’s heavier and less rigid? Just odd in my opinion.

Will Jolliff Because the GT-R was meant to be a track car. Making it a roadster, adding weight, adding more weight with body bracing, more leather etc is just pointless. You should just save your money and buy the GTC if you want a convertible.
