0:32 The "stop... woman" is so TRUEEE. I swear Barbara Wangui (the voice of Calypso) is making every ounce of my straightness fade away as soon as she opens her mouth. I LOVE HER SO MUCH TwT
@@arrowoffscript (it was a joke, however you read the word in ur head could be completely different from how me or anyone else reads it, I’m not actually saying anything meaningful here lol)
The way I interpret Odysseus telling Calypso he loves her, is that it's the same way you'd tell a friend or guardian that you love them. Love doesn't have to be associated with romantic feelings. In the song, Calypso wants Odysseus to love her as a partner, significant other, whatever you wanna call it, and that's why Odysseus says "but not in the way that you want me to", because while he may love her, it's a platonic love
Charybdis has always felt more like an animal so I think she wouldn’t be able to sing in the saga. Plus, how could she sing, it’s not like Scylla where her body has some human to it.
Interesting thing, she was Human, a Demi God daughter of Poseidon but, War started between Zeus and Poseidon who used Charybdis as a weapon of war. Charybdis was able to cause whirlpools and floods destroying entire islands. Zeus was pissed after the fight between the two brothers. Zeus had Charybdis turned into a monster. Hence why Poseidon hates going near Scylla's lair as it fills him with dread and guilt about his daughters fate.
Alot of ppl mentioning char not being able to speak...but even if she could she's busy breathing in to make the whirlpool. I mean...idk about you, but I find it reeeeally hard to sing when I'm actively drinking the ocean for the entire song
My take on "I love you" is this: 1: She tees him up for lying to her. She's begging him to lie to her, and he does - he doesn't love her. It would make no sense for Epic's Odysseus. 2: Odysseus has embraced the monster, but deep down, at his core, Odysseus is a good man. So, in his final moments on the island, to comfort a clearly distressed woman who is cursed to feel the way she does, he tells her what she wants to hear. He knows he'll never see her again, so rather than hurt her needlessly, he says what she has wanted him to say for the last 7 years.
I definitely can see it from both points for sure. I do believe in some way he does mildly care for her, like because he feels bad, like you mentioned just telling her what she wants to hear. But, I think Calypso doesn't understand the gravity of what she has done to Odysseus. You do make great points!
@@arrowoffscript Completely valid reading. I can see some part of him caring. Like recognising that in some ways she's just as trapped as he is and sympathising. I don't think Epic's version of Calypso recognises what she's done to Odysseus. Epic seems to be going with the version of her that's cursed to feel and do as she does, and if that's the case then she wouldn't know that she's in the wrong, and a curse is definitely something Odysseus could recognise in her.
@@arrowoffscript I think for what Epic is, and what it's intended to be (a musical on a stage) it's the right move. Assault scenes like that would not play well on a stage and just be super uncomfortable, but the nod and acknowledgement of what happened in the source material is super appreciated imo.
@alexeysimushov4971 I was about to say, the gods almost NEVER give definite reference to anything in the entire musical when talking to mortals, Hermes may not have SAID "yeah so in 3 days you're gonna run into this chick Charybdis, she's a real monster, but don't you worry, she'll be breathing in the whole time." but he DID say that danger would greet him with a smile and no matter what, just keep moving.
@@alexeysimushov4971 Hermes also said "When strangers lurk around the isle", so that part was most likely referencing the Suitors, as they're strangers to Ody, and also a danger to his family and home. Just look at Antinous.
