I spent a lot of time in the ocean and on beaches. Never got bit, even when swimming with the sharks. If they can see that you are human, they don't want a bite (unless they are starving).
Sharks are attacking from east coast Florida all the way up to Long Island and Gulf of Florida- 4 in one day last week. The real problem is the Gulf and Atlantic are at record heat. In hot ocean water sharks use more energy, metabolism spikes and they need to eat more food. At the same time less food is available - so they are more likely to turn to alternative sources of 'protein'.
I have spent a fair amount of times fishing along the coast of NC . Mostly surf fishing but some pier fishing . You can see a lot of critters down in the water , standing on the pier , which you can't see from the beach . My point . Drum roll . Vacationers for some reason feel safe if they are swimming near a pier . Big mistake especially if fishermen are on the pier throwing chum in the water to attract fish . Sometimes the oil slick from the chum attract really big fish with teeth . I have heard of people being Vacationers will sometimes sit under the pier to get out of the sun , then run out and jump in the ocean . Sounds good .
Because people are stupid. We are long overdue for handing out some white shark tags on the west coast. Sharks are cool, amazing animals that are vital to our ecosystem. The fact is we now have apex predators with no predators that are rapidly becoming out of control. Tree huggers have no clue about wildlife management or conversations with fact and reason.
And ... man's fascination of chumming shark's so they can swim with the sharks, and the ones do 'research' on them .. sharks will equate humans with food ...
Stop the beach fishing. It's dangerous to try to draw one kind of fish to your lure and assume you won't draw another. Find a pier! Bigger sharks are smelling the bait. Make it illegal to fish from the beach
Only been in the ocean once. It was at Padre Island back in the 70’s. The water was cold and murky. Got in up to my waist with my siblings, got the creeps, not an enjoyable experience at all. I got out after a few minutes. So did everyone else. There was a huge pier right next to where we went in. We all went walking on the pier, which had little kiosks, shells, hats, etc. When we got to the end there were several men cutting up whole tuna fish and putting huge pieces on hooks and throwing it into the water on ropes. My brother asked what they were fishing for and they said sharks. A big meat hook, meat and long ropes. None of us went back in the water while there. Ive never been back in the ocean.
This is why snorkeling and scuba are safer than surfing. When the surf is rough, the water is cloudy and sharks can’t see you clearly, so they bite to learn more. If they see a human clearly, they aren’t interested.
As he said, “looking for food”… Interesting point many are not acknowledging is that much of wildlife, even coyotes in Yellowstone (just last year or so) are now making attempts on or at least relying more on humans for food. The ecosystem is being challenged severely. If anyone is interested, much of my content is wildlife related and I was in this area just one week before commenting on the lack of natural food in videos documenting even the birds acting a little different as of late due to shortages.
