    • @glowworm2
      @glowworm2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Yeah, that's part of the short. At one point the radio announcer states that you can subdue any wild animal by staring it straight in the eye. Donald is relieved and immediately tries it out--only to see a gravestone in Ajax's eyes reading "Here Lies a Dead Duck." It's a great gag.

    • @ernovincze2900

      Ironically, with real-life gorillas, staring them in the eye is a very bad idea. If you avert their gaze and show submissive behaviour, they'll likely leave you alone, but if you look them straight in the eye, they might interpret that as a challenge to fight.

    I always loved the way they animated the speed of the characters in early Disney shorts especially the chase scenes. The use of blurring art helps you see how fast they're moving versus a chase in Looney Tunes where they just *zip* away in a puff of smoke or are seen running much slower.

    This is an absolute CLASSIC! The “here lies a dead duck” joke absolutely KILLS me every single time, as does the use of the foghorn for his blowing his nose
    It’s not really a dark toon or even really a movie but Mickey’s House of Villains is my core Halloween tradition. It’s always the last thing I watch on Halloween night and I only watch it once a year. It’s not really a movie since it’s just spooky themed shorts with a little bit of framing animation about the villains taking over the house, but the shorts are for the most part great (this short is one of them) and the big villain song is really fun and cool to see, even if the villains don’t do anything heinous. I’d recommend giving it a look if just for the shorts and a fun villain song while understanding it’s really not a “movie”.

    I've always found it fascinating that Donald is the member of the trio who is relatable to adults: a selfish jerk who always manages to learn his lesson. I remember watching this years ago and finding it both scary and hilarious, especially with all the little details and moments. Donald may not be the best caregiver letting his nephews have tear gas in the house, but at least they defeated a gorilla who is like the rhino from James and the Giant Peach, but doesn't kill people

    I can see someone make an indie horror game based on this concept. The player is just sitting at home, and listening to the radio (in the 40's and 50's). And when the radio announces an escaped convict, animal, mental patient, etc. the player hears sounds around the house. Now it's up to the player to switch channels and guard themselves from those intruders.

    I don't know the name of this one, but when I was a kid, I had this VHS of old public domain cartoons, and there was this one about Humpty Dumpty that scared the crap out of me. It was mainly the ending that scared me. The cartoon was about Humpty Dumpty building his wall high enough to reach the sun, cuz he thought it was made of gold. When he got there, some freaky lightning demons emerged from the sun and attacked him pretty fiercely, and that was the part that scared me as a kid. I wish I could remember the name of this cartoon, but I'd love for Doug to review it.

    My favorite moment was actually when Donald turns off the lamp next to his chair, the only light on in the room, and everything went black until the nephews switch on the lamp next to the sofa where they're sitting.
    It's an elegant subtle moment because it changes all the shadows in the room. Instead of being brightly lit, Donald's chair is now faded because the light is coming from farther away and from a shaded lamp. The shadows on the wall are deeper giving the empty chair a foreboding look. And now, the nephews are in the spotlight.

    One Donald cartoon I found much scarier was the Halloween episode where he was scaring the nephews the whole time as a prank until they turned it around and pretended that he had killed them. Though what really stuck out to me was the music, I think they use “In the Hall of the Mountain King” which I absolutely loved and which worked amazingly well to build the tome
