  • From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron shows how to bend solid steel round, square or flat stock using what is called a Chinese Pipe Bender. He shows the variable size dies, explains how they work, then makes two different bends using 1/4" square steel stock. He shows how to set the dies, how the metal block works, and how to determine what kind of bend you will get. See more how-to videos at www.kevincaron.com

    I bought this yesterday morning. Got it mounted to the concrete very securely, then started reading on how to put it together and use it via the instructions provided. Watched 2 or 3 TH-cam videos yesterday, while trying to stay awake doing so. Yes part of it was the intense heat we are having here in Southern Louisiana and mostly the (Yawn) videos. Started back again just now starting with yours. Bang it all clicked. Still sticky hot here, specially in the sun and it's not even noon yet. But you have done a great job telling, showing and videoing everything in a light comprehensive manner. Most of all saved me some time on 2 different types of custom U bolts I need. Great job. Thanks.

    I have used mine for years manufacturing. Bending the rated max: 1/4X2 inch stock. Handle extended and I grunt on every one. For the sharpest bend (no round die) 90 degree bends around a 5/8" bolt (the included pin didn't hold up, so I use long 5/8grade 5 bolts). Oiling the pins and dies makes it smoother and easier. I have made lots of "U bolts" out of allthread rod, and even bend rebar sometimes. For larger diameter dies I have stubs of pipe that slip over the factory dies. Nice demo video!

  • @ddb1143
    @ddb1143 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Very good demonstration on rolling the material around the die. The square block needs to be set back far enough so as to prevent binding which prevents the material from "rolling" around the die vs being pulled around the die.

    I have the bench top model. Sometimes I weld the ends of three or four pieces together, bend them, cut the welded ends off and that way I have identical screw ups... Your 6minute and 53 seconds video gives more info than that crazy manual that came with it. Helps that your first language is English... Thanks guys!

    Good video, one idea I've found on a few occasions the metal wouldn't get grabbed by the moving die I clamp a vise grip very tight on the edge sticking out to catch on the die and it'll drag the metal with through. It works well with thicker material that's been heated.

      If you place the block in the swing arm instead of the stationary frame, the stock will follow it right through without slipping. The original Hossfeld bender that all these compact things are clones of, came with two blocks. Much bigger though! Hossfeld videos can give you some really good ideas for bend setups!

      Grizzly industrial sells them for $4 each. Part number PH3183010. It’s off of their H3183 bender, which is the same machine. Grizzly is a great source for a lot of the Chinese machinery. They sell the same stuff as HF and Northern Tool (albeit held to a higher quality standard) but they stock all the parts for anything they sell. Can’t say that about HF! Grizzly is also a great supplier of mini lathe and mill parts.

    Yes, you can make a 9 inch dia. bend with this machine. You will have to do it in sections. You can't do it in one bend. You will have to bend a little and reposition your metal and bend some more. The biggest die for this machine is 3 inch.

      Kevin Caron, Artist I totally understand! For me, I tacked their manufacture onto the end of similar jobs. I had my blanks chopped up on saw when cutting and then in a box by lathe to get faced and drilled when doing similar. The grooves were roughed out on a mandrel with two at a time on it. I ground up my profile tools on cutter/grinder and kept them with other bits by the lathe. One evening I got done early and managed to profile most of them in an hour or so.
      Now thinking that maybe I should of made more as swaps! I did common copper pipe sizes and think a one inch set next.

  • @kevinandivy
    @kevinandivy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    On your second bend you couldn't this because the metal needed to move as it rolled around but you can keep the metal from moving buy putting vise grip pliers on the end at the hold block. I bent some loops made from hot roll half inch,( about forty which were about 2 1/2" width,) to weld to large, heavy bead plates at work for the purpose of picking them up with a hoist. I made them out of hot rolled half inch. I cut each piece of rod around 10 inches I think and with a little trial and error on a few pieces I found the point where I needed to mark all the pieces to clamp the vise-grips. This allowed each piece to remain at the hold block so I could get repeatability and once bent the ends would come out even

    • @kevinandivy
      @kevinandivy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I didn't mean hot as in heating the metal. You could heat the steel on larger pieces for easier work-ability but I mean hot roll steel which is basically mild steel that has the black coating on it. Hot roll comes in many sizes and styles like most angle iron and many flat stock come in hot roll and the edges are rounded. Cold roll steel is usually shiny without the black coating on it and the edges are usually sharp corners with no rounded edges and cold roll will machine much better than hot roll as well as it is an I would say "gummy" steel when machining, you know the qualities like tensile and such,. Hot roll is the cheapest you can buy for general fab work and welding but if using a small welder, I mean one that doesn't get very hot it always best to grind the black coating away because it may not get great penetration and burn in well. A "hot" stick welder will burn it in well though although a small mig may not.

I have bench grinders, vises, table top extensions, even an overhead light mount that I use. I also built a "storage tree" which holds them all when I'm not using them on the table. The hard part was removing the weld seam from inside the receiver stock. I did that with a broach.

      Not strong enough to do that wall thickness. You need a hydrophilic bender for that.

      It is not for pipe; this machine is for flat stock up to 2.5 inch wide. The name on the video is wrong.

  • @nigelkingsley-lewis534
    @nigelkingsley-lewis534 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the correct name is "Norfolk universal bender" They were made by a company called J.Abbey engineering of Watton Norfolk UK for many years, I think they are now long gone. The design was picked up and used by intermediate technology publications ltd. in the late 60's or early 70's I have a copy dated 1973. They made it into a unit and design that could be fabricated by blacksmiths in third world countries and published a booklet with plans and how to use it to make wheels for an Ox cart.

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not with the dies that come with the bender. Calling this a "pipe bender" is incorrect. It is a stock bender. You can get or make pipe dies for this but you won't bend anything bigger than about 1.5 inch diameter.
