Hi Matt. I guess there are lots of ways of achieving the same goal. I find the best way to learn is from my mistakes and the advice of others. I'm not 100% happy with the Standard I machined in Part 4, so I've just ordered another to try to get it spot on 2nd time round. Hopefully Part 4a will produce a better result. Good luck with yours. It would be great to see a pic/vid of it once finished. Cheers Andrew
Looking good Andrew :-)I really do enjoy this series, I do have a wry smile when the intro music starts. It reminds me of Rainbow - "Hello boys and girls, today Geoffrey and Bungle are going to turn a flywheel" :-)
Ha ha. That brings back some memories. I've just ordered another Standard casting, cos I'm not 100% happy with my first attempt. Look out for Part 4a! Will need to catch-up soon. Cheers Andrew
I'd be inclined to keep the old casting as possibly later you can use it as the basis for making a second engine from barstock. You can easily use the plans and the experience you have to make a replica. I'm currently doing the exact same thing to make a 10v and a No4.
Thank you Andrew, I am just about to do the same for a 10H. What type of locktite did you use to lock the flywheel onto the mandrel please? Oh you gave it right at the end (638) sorry should have watched it all. Still very informative though :)
Ha ha no worries Terry. I've just done the same and part read your message. My memory is rubbish so I have just viewed the video right through to try to remember! One of the three main reasons why I make the videos is to help remind me what I did if/when I try to do it again. I hope your flywheel turns out well and true - like mine did 😀. Cheers Andrew
Good work, glad to see the new Sc4 lathe is being used. When turned the boss on side two by flipping the work piece in the 3 jaw chuck, the boss's are not concentric to each other. 3 jaw chuck runout ?, It probably doesn't matter on this part, just saying 😀 ATB Adam
Hi Adam. Yep, is was fun playing with the SC4. I think camera angle might be playing tricks cos the bosses look good to me. In hindsight I should have made sure that neither the chuck or flywheel were rotated when switching round - in order to compensate for any chuck runout. I think I was lucky! Thanks for the feedback though. Cheers Andrew
Thanks MachineNZ. The SC4 is a delight to use. Lots of grunt but a bit noisier than the mini lathe. Power feed on the cross slide is very nice. The carriage lock isn't great though. Great to have additional capacity. All the best. Andrew
When you say "i will do this part off-camera" is the worst part of your videos!
By the way, this is a compliment!
Thanks for show some parts ... :)))
Thanks Lori!
It's sometimes a difficult balance.
Cheers
Andrew
Loving the series...2/3 the way through mine so good to see different approaches and where I went wrong lol. Thanks Matt

nice to see the progress
Great job, Andrew! Loctite is a wonderful resource for the machine shop. I hope you'll show your new lathe in more detail soon.
Hi Dave
I will try to do a short video of the SC4 soonish.
Cheers

InstaBlaster...
Nice work Andrew glad to see you enjoying the process, looking forward to next session sithee
Cheers mate!

A bit (lot) beyond me Pete, but I'll hang on to it.

Aluminium packing and a brass bearing will cause corrosion. Might be worth while taking apart and checking.
Outstanding .
Turning on a mandrel, much better! Good job on the videos.
Thanks mate. I'm gradually improving.
Cheers
Andrew
haha I'll send you my flywheels to be finished! good job

Hi Andrew, Great video. What are your thoughts on the Sc4 lathe?. Regards MachineNZ

You'll get better finish if you ream at a much slower speed.
Yeah I agree - I tend to ream a lot slower these days. Though I believe the saying is half the speed and twice the feed.
Cheers
Andrew
Ha ha when turning the fly wheel it looks like things are all going different direction of rotation. Its weired how things look on camera!!
