Yeah. They only pick on each other but not in a mean spirited way. Like how Katie covers her brothers mouth to shout, “Aaron whispered to me that he hates dinosaurs now!” It’s just wholesome sibling play. Even when Aaron was rightfully upset with Katie, he doesn’t scream at her or yell at her or call her names or say she’s awful or show resentment or anger; he’s just disappointed in her and cried. And I love how Katie tried cheering him up and didn’t make excuses. They just worked together. They don’t realize they’re the best family, I mean, they could be like the willoughby’s.

I'm the little brother of a Katie who wanted to pursue a career in animation and went to an art school to learn. Unfortunately, she quit in the middle of her second year because of a variety of factors: learning animation is HARD and GETS HARD, and becoming distracted by the social aspects of college that she ended up neglecting her classes and homework.

Let's appreciate the fact that the dynamic between the Mitchells feels very natural and fun at the same time. Everybody has their own problems instead of one person ruining it for everybody. The bond between Katie and Aaron is very wholesome and the conflict between Katie and Rick is something we can all relate too.
And also that goddamn animation is SO GOOD! it looks like a 2D painting!

    • @wierdgamer3067
      @wierdgamer3067 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

What's awesome is that it wasn't villifying either side of the conflict. Rick is just genuinely afraid of Katie being hurt from disappointment, like what he faced before. There was genuine reason for both people to feel the way they felt

  • @adrianfernandez2010
    @adrianfernandez2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +271

I’m not sure how many people have commented on this but I feel like they handled the “big reveal” trope between Katie and Rick (the dad) incredibly well. He was visibly hurt by Katie’s lie but he did not get angry or frustrated with her... something I cannot say that every film between a parent and child does right. After feeling defeated, it jumps to Rick finally understanding his daughter and her pain... how beautiful is that?
Also, even if it was not Rianda’s intention write the characters as neurodivergent, there is so much evidence that they are (specifically Aaron, Katie, and Rick).

One thing I personally liked about the movie was the portrayal of the younger brother. Now, I don’t know if this is canon or not but as someone who HAS Autism and has trouble talking to and approaching people that I think might be really cool friends, I found his side struggle with that and his clear hyperfixation on dinosaurs was an interesting way to possibly portray Autism and I ended up relating a lot to him because of that! If they were going with an autistic younger kid, I applaud them for the way they portrayed it as a thing he has rather than his only personality like some other films do.

I mean, yeah? They miss out on quite a bit of money, you'd be surprised.
Also, you do realize most companies don't really care that much about LGBT people right? Or that if they do, it's not enough to where they care who the money is coming from and will sacrifice representation if it means missing out on it? It's sad but people are less of allies than you might think

    • @Anemone_Productions
      @Anemone_Productions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

I can see why that seems like the common narrative. A lot of studios do censor LGBT relationships/representation so if writers really want to include it, it either had to be practically unnoticeable to get that studio's approval or they would go to another studio and make the LGBT portions of the story a very big part of the story as a statement. I think making a character that is LGBT without necessarily broadcasting it as a huge part of the story is also as important as these big coming out/bigotry stories just because being LGBT is only a small part of who many real people are. Not to mention the genre, this movie being a family roadtrip and parent/child conflict where any of the characters romantic life isn't as important as those family relationships.

You need to remember companies only care for money, and now LGBT is being profitable this is why we see it more, and most companies still are very openly anti-LGBT but do not say no to LGBT people money, just look how Blizzard had a pride flag on pride month on their main twitter but for the China twitter didn't, and when the flag appeared on videos it was censored for these countries

To be fair, the initial trailer (as well as the studio demanded “One Word Title”) didn’t exactly show off the strengths of what this movie could be. And it is true that it’s core story is something that has been done time and again, but the effort it puts into displaying that story and the style it takes with its conflicts make it enjoyable even if you know exactly how every beat will go.

I loved Katie sm, as a fellow queer girl I found her very relatable and liked that she was able to have a supportive family and have conflict with them unrelated to her sexuality. I really liked her relationships with her brother and her mom, and I thought the running bits she had with her dad (like the wooden moose and their song) felt authentic and their reconciliation earned, even if I found some of the beats in their relationship (like the split-screen "I don't get them" conversation) too paint-by-numbers to get into. This movie was such a fun ride.

Katie and Aaron's relationship was delightful as far as siblings go, and it's great how use their respective interests (film and dinosaurs) to bond with each other. Both of the parents were also likable in how they genuinely tried to connect with their kids, while also having strong personalities of their own. Oh yeah, and the robots and pug provided some of the best jokes in the film.
Speaking of dinosaurs and road trips, my mom and I went on a road trip last year and we revisited an old dinosaur tourist stop that she, my dad and I went to back when I was a little kid. I don't know what it is, but there's just something about animation that brings charm to certain kinds stories than live action does.
For example, I absolutely love Treasure Planet. It's my favorite animated Disney movie, and the vibe I get from their world building and humor is a bit similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. Yet, for whatever reason, I just can't bring myself to LOVE the latter as much.
Is it because I prefer seeing drawn characters rather than actors on screen? Is it because drawn characters are more expressive? Or maybe it's just the differing aesthetics between the mediums themselves?

I'd say the biggest praise I can give to this movie (besides that is so damn near impecable) its how it succeed in managing it's main conflict, not the robots, but the Parent-Child issue.
It's true, this conflict of "artistict child feels unsopported by their old fashioned parent (and viceversa) it's way overused, and most likely forever will be, its just a relatable issue that will be always be present throught the changing ages.
But more often than not, writers shoot their own foot by unintentionally downplaying the issue, either by actively making one of the parties the "evil" to be defeated by the "good" character that is 100% right, or by extending the conflict in a way that its hurtful for either of the characters (specially if it hurts the one the audience is supposed to root for, usually by making them behave like assholes for the sake of drama).
Where almost all pieces of media I've find themselves falling in either (or both) of these pitfalls, the Mitchells succeeds with flying colors, which it what makes the emotional parts and the bond of the family strike so hard, even if from a story stand point is both "predictable" and "unoriginal".
By starters, since the beggining of the movie both characters are present to be in the right, and in the wrong, at the same time on their own ways on a way that feels both relatable and realistic. Katie is indeed unsopported by her father on her aspirations, but she herself tends to behave unpleasantly with her father, and what seal's the deal, that she directly states "go to the campus with my people, never to return", forgetting all about her mother and her brother who always supported her.
Rick on the other hand, it's clear as day that he loves his family with all his heart, but his inherent disconect with her daughter interests and own experience at having to give up his "artistic dream" makes him shortsighted.
But what makes him work is that first, he never reaches the heights of the "fantasy forbidding father" trope, showcased by making the break of the laptop a genuine accident (instead of the usual intentional angry destruction one, like in Coco on recent memory), and that he didn't put himself on the way of her daughter's dream.
I mean, when he said that he "cancelled her flight" anyone else was scared? because I was, for a second I thought they would go with the route that he'd also cancelled her scholarship, something to be revealed at the climax of the movie to extend drama and making his character unlikeable.
But he didn't, there wasn't any twist, the intention was his expressed purpose, take her to school, but having a last memorable bonding opportunity with her, and so he did.
By making both characters flawed, yet relatable and likeable, the conflict didn't become one sided or overly simplified, and they didn't just nailed the introduction, but also de Resolution.
To start, let's talk about the catalyst to the Resolution, the video Incident. The incident on itself its pretty common, show a harsh insult or conversation in secret to other carachter to reap the fruit of discord, by making the characters forget their development on the heat of the moment due to distrust.
It's not inherently flawed, but the execution is so commonly messed up, either by making one (or both) characters unlikable with an overly assholistic behaviour, by making them dumb enough to extend the conflict at hand (like the Ford and Stand fight in the finale of GF), or just feeling either generic or artificial, the conflict it's too dumb easy to mess up.
But here, by the moment the video scene happens, we as an audience know that Katie, though her words were true to what she really thought, it was so "long ago" that by the momment of truth we are aware that she doesn't feel that like that anymore (we aren't only told that, but we also "saw" it) , she still hasn't reached her resolution, but that third perspective look with new eyes to her behavior kickstarts her realization.
Rick on the other hand, his usual role would have been to feel so betrayed that he'd fire back to his daughter (let's say, Mabel learning that Dipper decided to stay in GF), dooming them on the process, but he didn't what he felt was not betrayal, but genuine shock and sadness, completely natural to his character. He didn't intentionally nor stupidly stopped the cilinder, but the shock shook him enough to loose his grip with the lever (which was implied to be hard). And after the fact, did he scream at his daughter? did he recriminated her? did he even show the slightest bit of anger to her? No, the only thing he showed was genuine despair.
So we finally arrive to the long awaited resolution, which for both character were short, but perfect.
Katie, having come to face her own behaviour, clashing her old opinions, to her new ones, and its consecuences, is at a loss, she know its her fault, she understands that her words were her own, no one forced her to say it, heck, she didn't even need to say it, but she did, and Pal weaponized that against her.
Both her parents are captured (and as far as they know, on their way to an innevitable death), she and her brother and all alone, and for the first time on the movie, she can't cheer her brother up, she hurt her "life long friend" deeply.
Now, she watches the family tape, the tape she was unkowingly (but foreshadowed at the start) filming over, and comes to face with the truth, she used to unconditionally love her father deeply, and the two had a strong bond, but as a lot of us do when growing up, we forget. And then, she gets the payoff of the early conversation with her mother "why did he sold the house he built, his dream?".
Because of HER, for her FUTURE, as predictable as it is for the audience, the character didn't know, heck, she couldn't possibly even conceive that, her whole life she has been so fixated in her dream, that she probably couldn't even consider how someone would willingly give it up.
And yet, no matter how much Pal tried to downplayed, love really is a powerful thing.
And what absolutely nails the scene, which makes it my favorite scene, just a simply short phrase.
Again, put yourselves on Katie shoes, you've been fighting for your dream all your life, always felt alienated for your closer ones as a result, then one day you learn that one of them had the same dream as yours, but mysteriously failed at it. Nowadays you see that person, completely foreign to that goal, what would you imagine that happened to them?.
Yet, at the moment of truth, was her father bitter? NO, he was understandably sad, this was his dream after all, but when told how hard his decision is on him, his inmediate answer? "Nah, its easy", while playing with his baby daughter. And then she realizes that no matter how much she felt allienated to her father, his father never suffered a mid-life crisis on unfulfilled dreams (like Bob Parr), given the chance, he would do the same, again and again.
As a person that's currently on university, the scene reminded me how grateful I am to my parents, how lucky I am to still have them, and yet, how horribly I got to treat them at times while sorting my life on puberty.
And for a parent, I can't even imagine yet how hard the scene must hit. I watched the movie again through and adult streamer with a baby girl, when the scene ended he inmediately said "For her, I'd give up this house, though I finally have it accomodated to my needs, if it means her future, the choice in obvious", and when asked by someone on the chat "and what about how expensive is your setup", he inmediately, without a second thought answered "not as valuable as her". Not gonna lie, I almost cried.
And finally for Rick, though even shorter, was also well executed. At his lowest, he finally gets to actually “watch” one of his daughters films, and as with every piece of art, its a reflection on its creator’s heart. Its actually very sad how its shown how Katie suddenly stops doing her Dog cop voice during her monologue, since its very personal to her.
And Rick definitely saw that, he saw what scentially was a thinly veiled critique against him, and where oh so many characters inmediatelly go on the defensive, trying to justify their behaviour, he just listens to his daughter’s heart. Also helps that the video wasn’t a gratuit insult, it was a respectful take on the issue, for both sides. And so it’s believable how the father drops his despair, and when he sees his daughter in danger, he helps. So when he says to her what the “sargeant” should say on the “sequel”, it makes a very heartwarming, silly moment, the same as the family itself.

    • @eduardosolistinoco9698

And finally the end of the film, the make or break moment, when we get so see the fruits of the development, making even the slightest wrong turn here would diminish the whole movie.
And again, when we are shown the family car in front of the university, was anyone else scared? I trusted the film, but I feared that they would back down.
Though it’s been years since GF finale, and though I’ve always felt that Dipper SHOULDN’T stay with Ford (since a great deal about his development on the series was learning to not close himself up to other people, like Ford does), the delivery forever left a sour taste in my mouth, since it came up more as a reactionary decision for the sake of Mabel (and in the situation, the rest of the world) instead of a personal, rational healthy decision, since time and time again on the series he was constantly the one doing the sacrifices.
And so, I feared they would do the same, that suddenly the daughter pulled a Dipper and say “You are MY people, I won’t leave you” and give up on the school.
But they didn’t and so we got a very heartfelt, sweet, heartwarming goodbye with the familly, seeing the strength of their newly fixed bond, and how they’d go against Pal stat as a result. Because it didn’t matter it their paths were on different directions, for they forever would be connected by their own choice. They went through robot hell, and came out better out of it, ending it in any other way would have been a betrayal of the movie themes.
Notice how specifically the one doing the calling on the end was the Mom, in contrast to how Pal declared that the most blocked calls are from mothers, and that the situation actually could lent itself to do exactly that, Katie Friends suddenly tell her that she hang out with them, but she inmediately hears the call and gives priority (without disregarding her Friends, since she told them she would catch up with them). With honesty, how many times on a situation like that we tend to ignore calls?
In short, the movie may have used already overused ideas, but executed them PERFECTLY.
I rambled more than I expected, but I can’t talk enough about how much I love this film and what it means to me, it has really become and instant top 10, or even top 5 for me.
edit1: Though I don't have anything against the 1 word title trend, cosidering to the lengths the movie goes to show Katie style and mindset, "The Mitchells vs The Machines" is definitely a title she would use, and so its the perfect title for the movie.
edit 2: In retrospective, knowing that Katie is queer actually makes her relationship to her family a lot better in the introduction on the film, since its never brought up as a point of tension in her family. Goes to show how much the family truly loves each other even before their development even began

    Everything about it!
The characters, the story, the art style, the humor, the chaotic animation- it's just incredible!
And sure, maybe the plot is a bit familiar, and maybe the animation is a bit chaotic, but I feel like this movie was able to take those elements and make them work in the best way possible.
Say what you will, but in my opinion, that movie is a gem and you cannot convince me otherwise!

I watched this with my family it hit very personally with all of us except my younger brother. Mostly because I'm Katie's age and heading off to college soon. But also because we have a loosely similar dynamic. My dad, while not particularly into what I do (graphic design) tries to understand it to the best of his ability and my mom is just incredibly supportive with whatever I do because she's also an artist.
We all loved not only because it was a fantastic movie, but also because we know the utter chaos of just trying to understand each other.

I went into this movie cringing so hard, expecting a "technology is bad" movie. Like, Emoji Movie opening bad. I was very pleasantly surprised. I loved that Pal pointed out the foolishness of demonising technology, as did the other characters. I appreciated the throwbacks to sci-fi movies of the past that showed the obvious fondness the creators have for the genre (PAL being a reference to HAL, for example). I did find some of the humour and internet references a little forced, but the Furby fight was honestly, a genius way to work in internet culture.

This film really spoke to me as I connected with Katie and Rick's father daughter dynamic in the dynamic with my own father. Katie and I are both film school students who feel at times our father doesn't really get what we do, while Rick and my dad are two guys who prefer to work with their hands and don't really understand technology/or learn enough of it to kinda bungle their way through it enough to get where they want with it. Only difference is Katie is a new student while I graduated already, she's a lass and I'm a lad, and I didn't need a robot apocalypse to connect with my father XD
Not sure why you are calling them the Michells when they are clearly named the Mitchells. Must be a silent T thing. Still glad to hear your thoughts on this pretty great movie!

This movie feels like it really found its footing in the middle. Started a little heavy on the forced melodrama, but once it got going and they were actually having a road trip, I was hooked. I got the sense too that the family had its issues, but didn't resent each other deep down. Maybe it's personal, but I feel like it's a very genuine dynamic. Most families are like that, with good intentions, but sometimes just not expressing them particularly eloquently.
I actually liked how they characterized the father as an artist in his own outdoorsy way. While he does come off a bit bumbling and incompetent stereotypically, I do like the dimension they added to him, and I think in the end, they gave him a fair treatment, even though he was out of his element. Him being able to change and grow in fact was key to the plot resolution.
It was an altogether great film.
(Seeing this notification actually reminded me to check it out, so thank you for that. I had to watch it myself before I let this review color my opinions, but I'm glad I did. Thanks for that!)
