      @@gasdorficmuncher9943 Unfortunately, it loos like you have to print, sign, and mail this form to the applicable IRS service center based upon the form instructions. If you do not have access to a printer, there are other ways to update your address on file with the IRS. You can call the IRS, mail a written letter, or update your address on your next tax return. www.irs.gov/faqs/irs-procedures/address-changes

    Thank you for your video. I just have one question. Do I have to check 1 of the boxes at the top or can I leave them both blank?

      The instructions are not explicit. However, it seems to be implied that changing your home address would at least impact your individual income tax return, which most people file each year. If you already updated your home address in your last filed tax return, you might not need to file Form 8822: www.irs.gov/faqs/irs-procedures/address-changes

    If I changed my name 2 1/2 years ago do I put my prior (maiden) name or do I only put it if I’ve just recently changed my name?

    Hello, I applied for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number at the beginning of August this year, and it hasn't been approved yet. Can I change my mailing address before the confirmation letter is sent out?

    • @teachmepersonalfinance2169
      @teachmepersonalfinance2169  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may change your mailing address with the IRS at anytime. While you can use IRS Form 8822 (for personal address) or IRS Form 8822-B (for businesses), this page outlines some of the other methods you can use to update the IRS without having to refile either of those forms: www.irs.gov/faqs/irs-procedures/address-changes
      If you're interested in IRS Form 8822-B (for a business), here's the article we wrote: www.teachmepersonalfinance.com/irs-form-8822-b-instructions/

      I have already downloaded the Form 8822. I am currently not residing in the U.S., so I don't have an SSN, and I've always been single. When filling out the form, I checked the first item in the boxes section, and then filled out sections 3a, 6a, and 7, along with my phone number and my signature. Do you think this is acceptable?@@teachmepersonalfinance2169

      @teachmepersonalfinance2169  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think that IRS Form 8822 would help you avoid Virginia state taxes. It's a federal tax form, and states are not required to honor it or process it.
      Here's a link to the Virginia Department of Taxation, with more information on how to do that: www.tax.virginia.gov/how-report-changes-your-business
      To change your business address with the IRS, you should file IRS Form 8822-B

    Will they return this if its not dated with the signature? They returned mine, but its signed, just not dated. The second page marks #7, basically asking me to sign it, but its signed. Thank you.

      According to Internal Revenue Manual 3.13.2.4.7, the IRS instructs the person who processes Form 8822 to return the form if ANY required information is missing. Specifically, “Return Form 8822 to the taxpayer with Letter 104C or Letter 6800sce. Send the letter to the taxpayer's address on Master File. Instruct the taxpayer to complete Form 8822 and return to us.”
      If you received Letter 104c or Letter 6800sce, that’s probably what happened. My guess is that if you dated the form and resubmitted it, your change of address would be processed.

    What about if you’re just changing a child/minors address

    • @teachmepersonalfinance2169
      @teachmepersonalfinance2169  ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the IRS form instructions, if the address change also affects the mailing address for your children who filed income tax returns, complete and file a separate Form 8822 for each child. If you claim the children on your own tax return, and they do not claim tax returns of their own, you probably don't need to file a separate form for them.

    Do they send you anything back in the mail to confirm or no.

      If you were to change your business address information (IRS Form 8822-B), you should expect to receive an IRS Notice known as CP148. CP148A would go to your new address, and CP148B would go to your old address.
      There does not appear to be any similar guidance for taxpayers filing IRS Form 8822, so I would not expect to receive any confirmation.

    • @teachmepersonalfinance2169
      @teachmepersonalfinance2169  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do not see anything in the form instructions about being able to use your individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) for your change of address form.
      If you simply want to change your address, you can also call the IRS, verify your identity, and give the representative your new address.
      Was there another question that you have?

      You can print out the form from any printer that's available. From there, you would mail the completed form to the IRS office that corresponds to the state where you live. A list can be found in the accompanying article: www.teachmepersonalfinance.com/irs-form-8822-instructions/

      You mail the change of address form to the IRS office that matches the state of your OLD mailing address. This article contains the list of states and matching IRS office locations:
