Really glad to hear you got your bikes back, Ryan! I've been looking at the Trek 1120 myself and understand how that one is especially nice to have back! Awesome to see that you've got some really good friends out there willing to go the extra mile to help you out like that.
lol, yeah it sad that it has to come to that to have to sleep with your bike to feel safe. my old bike I just leave in the garage with the door open but when I get my new bike (soon) I will park it in my bedroom locked up.
I recently found a bike in the woods. It looked to me like it had been stolen and dumped. The next morning (black Friday) it was still there. So, I wrote down the trek serial number and took it to the local trek dealer with the bike in my truck. They were able to look up the original buyer and contact them. The bike was stolen and the trek dealer was able to get it back to the rightful owner. Score one for the good guys (Trek and Walt's Bike Shop).

My bike and my neighbors' bikes all got stolen from the bike room to our apartment a couple months ago except a boy's bike. A police report was filed for my stolen bike and I was told by my manager that she had helped the other tenants out at reporting the theft of their bikes to the police but none of us have gotten them back. @@duzer Glad you got your bike back. We have become too civil for these scumbags. In the old country where I am originally from we use a sjambok to give some treatment to the thief till he bleeds.
@@duzer sorry to hear that Ryan, it's disgusting.I've been stolen from before and its not nice.the sad truth of life is that as hard as your working to save a little money n get by in life some low life some where is working just as hard to take what you have.if its any conciliation at least in U.S.A., if they get caught they will do time, here In Ireland you would literally have to kill someone before you would get sent away! I've had my long-term saving stolen before n it's a terrible thing!! Give you regards to your gran and tell her unfortunately she's not alone and hopefully one day with gods grace karma will take revenge on this worthless people!! Sorry granny duzer ....also I know in belgium as I used to work there I've seen people leave really good bicycles out side and they never got touched.I onced asked a native there about this, I was told that stealing a bike is the same punishment as stealing a car so nobody will touch your bike.perhaps they should make this the law elsewhere too:-):-)
Ryan, this is good news. Years ago I had a cheap bike stolen and it crushed me. I'm sorry any of your bikes have ever been stolen, but I'm glad you got the two back. Your videos are awesome and informative in all ways, even to the point of reality that their are jerks out there (like you suggested should be kicked in there balls) and it scares me to think any of my bikes would be stolen today. Thanks for the information to register our bikes and the need to keep them secured. Happy riding friend.
Congratulations on getting them back! Kind of an early Christmas gift! Here on the Island it's like magic, your bike disappear and you NEVER see it again... They go through the bicycle version of "Auto Chop"
I'm going to buy a bike, leave it unlocked, then hopefully in 1 year find it again. Seems like a bullet proof way for me to get more views on my channel. Thanks for the tip :D
Awesome. A few years ago someone stole my new Giant NRS full-suspension MTB off my front porch as I was putting on my shoes to go riding. They apparently knew that every Wednesday at 3 PM I rolled it out of my apartment and leaned it against the wall while I put on my SPD shoes and kneepads. I walked out to start my ride and the bike was gone. I never got it back but Allstate homeowners insurance paid me in full for the bike within a week or so. Lesson learned - keep my bike indoors when living in an apartment and only take it outdoors when I am prepared to mount it and ride or to load it on my rack and drive away. Seriously, because someone stole my 12 foot Kryptonite cable by cutting the large padlock on it, so nothing is actually safe, especially good bikes, outdoors.
Yup. I don't sleep with my bike, but it does live in my bedroom when its not between my legs. I commute to work on it and it goes up into my office as well.
The worst feeling is being reunited with your property "after" a stranger has used it. Makes me feel violated. I'm glad you found your bike's and what a great feeling to know he'll get jail time.... Or the broken leg 👍🏼
That's a great news that shows the power of people with positive energy. Kudos to Boulder PD for their persistence work. In most countries, the coppers don't even file a claim for this kind of petty theft. Social networks unite people who share the same values and principles.
A Trek 1120 costs around $2,500, so even with depreciation due to being used, it's well into grand theft territory, not petty theft. The minimum value that usually qualifies for grand theft is $500.
Wow! Impressed you got it back. Usually never happens unfortunately. Hard work pays off. Looking forward to what is coming now that you have a bike back that clearly was a favorite. Stoked for you.
SO GLAD YOU GOT THE TREK BACK!! Nothing worse than theft. Really irritates me! I love the 1120 hope i can get one myself one day, but by purchasing it myself :D
I think so many people post, because we've all been violated in that way at some time or another, and it feels good to know the good guy wins sometimes. It caught my eye because I used to live in Chicago. You didn't let your hand leave it for a moment. It was a great moment to see you get the first back, especially as it was, and then to close the book. I hope you have a great summer.
You were so fortunate to get them back. 2016 I flew out to Vilnius, Lithuania, to pick up and ride back to the UK a Rohloff Moulton I'd bought on Ebay. The bike was like new, the Rohloff hub every I'd hoped for. The 2 weeks I spent riding across the top of Poland were probably the best 2 weeks I'd ridden anywhere. Perfect weather, great roads, lovely people. About 1800hrs, 2nd day in Germany, I stopped for a coffee at a service station. Put my chain through the frame and front wheel. Came out 15 mins later and the bike + everything on it gone. Police called, CCTV checked, nothing seen. I was left with nothing but what I was standing in. Bike never recovered. I did put the story out on various bike forums, but to no avail. I'd have been very surprised if the scum bag thief even knew what he was stealing. After getting home I didn't leave the house for 5 days as I couldn't face the prospect of bumping into anyone that I knew and then having to tell the story. The worst part was losing my Brooks saddle, that I'd had for about 20yrs and on which I'd done 10s of thousands of miles. If I was to be offered the bike and all of my gear back, OR my saddle, I'd have to pick the saddle. Everything else can be replaced, but I can't buy a saddle as broken in as that one, (and I don't have enough years left to break in another to the same degree!) Anyway, water under the bridge, lessons learnt. Within, hopefully, the next couple of years, I plan on doing a long distance ride in the USA, (on a Rohloff Moulton!) and have just discovered you very useful vids. Many thanks, LG.
Glad you got your bike returned. I have never had a bike stolen, but in 1996, when I was deployed to a dangerous, very sandy place, my storage unit was broken into and all of my personal firearms were stolen. The police recovered several almost immediately, but one handgun was gone....until June of this year. A detective in Florida found me 23 years later in Kansas and shipped it to a local FFL dealer for me to pick up.
This is great ending to your story Ryan. My uncle had an Orange colman canoe stolen back in the late seventies. It showed up in a pawn shop 15 years later with his name still in one of the seat tubes. The owner of the pawn shop called the police and found out it was stolen . My uncle was living in Upland Ca at the time and it showed up in Springfield Mo. This is the same place he was living at the time it was stolen. He still has that same canoe today. I am glad you got both your bikes back.
No lock lasts forever. I recently changed the pedals on our two Trek F600 folding bikes to MKS EZYs, which are removable. A locked bike is even less attractive to a thief without the pedals. Merry Christmas Trek fan!
Im very happy you got them back. I've had too many bikes stolen and also seen a few of them on Offer up shortly after being taken. My last stolen bike was a Felt road bike and the thief used a knife and a hatchet to "convince" me to give it up. In the end, "stuff" can be replaced, a life cannot. On the road, I always carry an Abus Granit Ulock and at home I have massive Kryptonite New York chainlocks. When out camping I add a steel tether I made from Home Depot. Using a length of steel rope(10'-12') covered in plastic, I make loops on each end with those loop clamp things on the other side of the aisle that bolt the looped cable together. The other side will get a Velcro strap with a steel ring, slid onto it before bolting down the loop. 3 clamps each loop then threadlock the bolts and wrap in silicone tape so there are no sharp edges to scratch anything. At night, the loop weaves through the bike then the end with the Velcro strap will go through this loop and pull tight. Velcro wraps around my ankle and cable isn't very large so its not very obvious. If my bike is moved, not only is it U-Locked to a stable object, its also attached to me! I also have an alarm attached(hidden) with steel bands to all of my bikes. Alarms don't stop anything, BUT the screaming siren will get my attention that my bike has an issue. Less than $20 on amazon, for your bike to be able to scream for help is money well spent. The steel tether cost under $20 to make from HD.
Ryan, what a fantastic outcome. I still have and ride a Trek I bought new in 1979 and it hangs from the ceiling in my bedroom when it’s not being ridden, I’d be devastated if it was stolen. I totally agree with the idea of registering your bike both nationally and locally if possible. The suggestion of others to photography your bike(s) and document them well is a great one too. One other idea I wanted to share was one I learned when I sold a bike I had a few years ago. The guy who eventually bought it wouldn’t even come to look at it unless I could show him my original sales receipt. Apparently he had his bike stolen and reused to support a system that encouraged theft for cash. The old saying is true, “if it seems like too good of deal to be true, it probably is”, and someone is likely enabling that great deal with the pain of a stolen bike. If everyone who bought a used bike demanded proof of ownership, the market for stolen bikes would be far less appealing for thieves.
Been watching this story since it happened. So nice to see a happy ending to this. Can't wait to see you on the 1120 again. Absolutely loved your Baja trip. Cheers!
Ryan, Congratulations on getting your 2nd bike back. I remember the time when this happened and knew that it wasn't too long after you came back from your Baja trip.
I'm really happy you got the bike back and that the cops are able to track down the thief. Having test ridden the Trek 1120 in Pagosa Springs, CO I am really impressed with it. It looks really cool too. You might want to take a look at the new Surly Bridge Club. It is a knobby touring bikepacker with 11-50 cassette.
You have better Police across there than we have in Scotland. I have a mate who is a Police Officer and he's not allowed to give me advice. Well done at getting your bikes back.
I don't like seeing stolen bike videos but it's always great to hear they were returned and that is what I hope for everytime I click on one. You are lucky, Ryan, most never come back as they left hahaha Happy Christmas and Merry Holidays, everyone. Whatever you celebrate have the best one yet!!! :)
Nothing is worse than someone taking your bike. A bike is part of you. I’m very glad you’ve gotten your bike back. Now it’s time to put some miles down.
just catching up on some of your older videos and love that you got them back..... I feel the trepidation man- really I do.... going to hang some gps on my latest ride so I can find it, if it happens again and I'm keeping this one indoors too! Love the adventures you go on keep up the fun!
I found your channel through your original stolen bikes video. Checked out few other videos and immediately subscribed. Boy! It's been a good journey, specially the love cycles series was particularly beautiful! ♥️
Ryan, life is good. I just came across to this video of yours and it is quite a story. Yes, just be careful I too hate when people steal another's hard work equipment. Have a great life. 😊😊👍👍
Dammit Ryan. Now you have me shopping for a new bike. I am forsaking my Surly Pugsly for the Trek. Merry Christmas and thank you for all your hard work on these videos.
Hey man I lost my Giant TCR 2013 model a few years ago. I had ridden her thousands of miles. We climbed some of the highest mountains when I vacationed in Colorado and she even had a sweet power meter from stages which i saved up for a few months. Long story short, I will live in your victory vicariously and pretend like we are once again riding to work :) !!! May all bike thieves stub there toes so hard they cant walk without pain for months!
That's awesome! Hope to see some new adventure content with you riding the 1120 again soon. As a side note, I'm currently saving up to buy an 1120 to commute to work on and do some bike packing trips. All because of your videos.
Hey Ryan so happy that you got your bike back. Power of the community helped you in this. Noone can do all alone. We all need people Ryan because we are humans. For the good times to celebrate stg and for the bad times to ask for help. Great, great news.
This is good news. I really really really wish you didn't need to make this video and never had it stolen. Bicycle theft should be a felony straight away. It is so selfish and cruel. They don't know how much we love our bicycles...and car drivers have no idea how common this is. :(
aw man its nice that this has a happy story I had one wheel stolen from my car and man that sucked so bad... put me back on debt I didn't wat etc. I'm learning how to keep bikes safe etc and starting to do that more. Love your videos and love seeing colorado there too hopefully one day i run in to you! haha
Today me and my friend where riding around on are bikes, enjoying the day. We stumble across this forest and we wanted to go and check it out. When we came back are bikes were gone. I am so devastated and don't know what to do, but this video is giving me some hope to eventually find our stolen bikes.
Ryan, I really dug your video on the survival show and how you made out. Glad to see you got your bikes back too! I ride/race dirt bikes, I’d be devastated if I came home ANY day and saw them all gone, but especially on Christmas. We have a very bad problem with dirt bike thefts here in New England. I believe Facebook and Instagram are ways the crooks see what you have and where you live.
Another win for social networking! Couple of years ago a privateer pro racer had his 450 KTM ($14000) stolen right out of the pit area at the Anaheim SX race. He posted the occurance within 15 minutes and some random fan spotted the bike in the back of a pickup truck on the freeway while driving home after the same race. Got the license plate and tracked it to an address in Ventura. Sheriff officers raided the guys house and the bike was recovered.
I worked for a few years at a bike shop in Northern Michigan and as a 10yr sobriety gift to myself I bought a Trek Blue Marlin 29er. I loved it!...Also the head mechanic over time kept upgrading every single part. I was left with a wonderful wonderful bike. A few years later I moved in with my Twin brother in Denver....I went to a 12step Meeting In Denver on York St and in 30 minutes it was cut through both locks!....I worked at Golden Bike Shop part time and rode a road bike from Denver each Day and My buddy Steve Riggle said "hey man want to buy my Trek SS Rig for cheap?" And I have been on that same frame size....same bike all over Colorado and Midwest and Man I think about my Buddy each time I ride it....usually as I sport a Cheshire Cat ear to ear Grin!.....so thankful!
So cool that the Boulder PD actually worked this case! So what do you do with your bikes when you have to go grocery shopping or something? Or do you just not leave them locked up outside for extended periods of time?
Glad you got your bikes back . I had a nice new mtn bike stolen out of my car . A few days later while looking on Craig’s list I saw that it had been stripped and was being sold in parts except for the frame which could have been traced by a serial number. So I couldn’t prove to the police those parts were mine . A few thousand dollars down the drain .
Congrats for your success! Fortunate help from your friend too. I’m going to pursue your tips to see if I can have any luck finding my R&M Super Delite. I know the feeling of despair. The shock of discovering it stolen still lingers. I used to do Centuries and Ride the Rockies, but now after forty years have passed, an electric assist is magic. I’m always courteous on the trails. I just want to still be able to participate. I’ve put up cameras and am using our burglar alarm system for the potential of getting a new one if the old one is never found. The “old one” was six months old. Arlington, Virginia.
Another idea is to get one of those apple 'Airtags' and hide them inside the bike somewhere (maybe bar or stick under the seat). Best way to track them if lost!
Same thing happened to me in Boulder in mid 80s. My Walkman was stolen from my glove compartment (where I keep my gloves...). And 5 yrs later. Boulder PD retrieved my Walkman and returned it to me! Have faith always!
Bike = life. I am so glad for you, Ryan! Prop’s for those who got your bikes back. Happy ending. And one of the BEST parts is the (scumbag) thief is going to jail! :-)
Very glad you got the bikes back ! I know this unrelated but I found this video by accident but my company is based out of Minnesota and we opened up a shop in Boulder this last June . Our work vehicles have been broken into more in the last 7 months there than the entire 21 yrs in Minnesota. Love Boulder but the people there suck gotta get that dope money I guess.
oh man what a bummer! I hate hearing that. Most of the thieves come from outside Boulder, cause they know we all have expensive toys. Best of luck with your new shop!
Hooray! What a wonderful, warm fuzzy follow-up story- especially this time of year with the holidays approaching. Excellent! Goodness wins again! (Just goes to show ya- you get what you give! You put out all these inspiring & motivating, positive videos into our world.....In turn, the world returned your bicycles!) :)
It's pretty bad down here in Albuquerque too. I learned my lesson right off the bat when I moved here for college years ago. Bike got stolen on campus within my first week (broad daylight while I was in class). Known a lot of people over the years who've had theirs stolen as well. These days I don't even feel good leaving my bike outside for basic commuting and errands, unfortunately. If the bike comes out, it's specifically because I'm going out for a ride, and it stays with me the entire time until it's safe inside at home again. Stinks, because I don't like being so paranoid, and I would like to use my car less, but I've seen too much around here for me to relax about it.
Awesome! Proves that there are more good people than bad...but we still have to be inconvenienced by the baddies! Have you ever thought of doing a video about some of the new technology out there that makes finding a stolen bike easier? I've seen some that claim bikes can be tracked via GPS. Also, I work part-time in a bike shop, and I am always showing bike buyers that it DOES have a serial number...to keep their owner information and know where it is in just such a case. You be you, Ryan; I look forward to new videos from you all the time! As a cyclist from the next state over (NE), I'd always be open to doing a project with you...just reach out.
Woot. At this point I thought there was no chance on getting the 1120 back. Get that baby fixed up and take it on another epic journey just get another saddle this time.go for a brooks.

Congrats on getting your bikes back Ryan ,I love happy endings, happy trails.
The bike was stolen from his house. Would you lock your bike inside your house? Probably not
@@osamaalzehrawi1081 It was a joke, after he said that people love stolen bike stories.
He said the only thing that remained was the busted lock.......
It's a risky and expensive way to gain followers, but give it a shot! haha. Maybe try something less expensive, like a soccer ball ;)
I commute to work on it and it goes up into my office as well.
right on!
It's like the only knock on bikes that they're so easily stolen; so glad you got yours back!
true!
Thieves do so much more damage than they realize...
SO GLAD YOU GOT THE TREK BACK!! Nothing worse than theft. Really irritates me! I love the 1120 hope i can get one myself one day, but by purchasing it myself :D
Thx for this. I’ll be registering my bikes.
Thanks!! This story has a happy ending for sure
Add. GPS (in your handlebar stem, etc). A Lo-Jack of sorts.
It's unbelivable! Congrats Ryan!!!
Glad it’s back home. Enjoy the rebuild!!!
Everything else can be replaced, but I can't buy a saddle as broken in as that one, (and I don't have enough years left to break in another to the same degree!)
Anyway, water under the bridge, lessons learnt.
Wow! That's an incredible story!!
Happy You Had Your Bikes Recoverd Brother 😎✌️😁
No lock lasts forever. I recently changed the pedals on our two Trek F600 folding bikes to MKS EZYs, which are removable.
A locked bike is even less attractive to a thief without the pedals.
Merry Christmas Trek fan!
Awesome that you got your bike(s) back and kudos to the Boulder PD!! WOOHOO!!
Thanks to all who helped you to get back some of your souvenirs , stay cool and take care
So glad you got you bikes back! That girl is bad ass! I would lose my marbles if I lost one of my bikes! Cheers
That's crazy. Glad you got them back though. Truth is nothing is safe anywhere if someone is determined to steal them.
This is why I keep my bikes in my apartment.
Been watching this story since it happened. So nice to see a happy ending to this. Can't wait to see you on the 1120 again. Absolutely loved your Baja trip. Cheers!
Ryan,
Congratulations on getting your 2nd bike back. I remember the time when this happened and knew that it wasn't too long after you came back from your Baja trip.
Congrats on your bike's return-
Yay!
Glad to hear that you got both your bikes back.
Merry 2019 Christmas, 2 years late! Awesome.
Great news. Looking forward to the video where the thief is drawn and quartered.
Amazing story! Glad to hear you got your bikes back!
I'm so psyched!
Awesome. It’s great to retrieve something lost or stolen. Happy for you. 👏🏼
Glad youtube recommended me your videos again.
I'm glad too!! Thanks for watching this
@@duzer very happy to see you got it back man!
I found your channel through your original stolen bikes video.
Checked out few other videos and immediately subscribed. Boy! It's been a good journey, specially the love cycles series was particularly beautiful! ♥️
That's awesome! Thanks so much for staying with me. Cheers my friend
May you and your 1120 have a Merry reunited Christmas!

Trek is sending me a new crankset! yeeaaaaahhhhh

Recovery of Priority bike was AWESOME!
It sure was!
Ryan, life is good. I just came across to this video of yours and it is quite a story. Yes, just be careful I too hate when people steal another's hard work equipment. Have a great life. 😊😊👍👍
Oh man, two years later! That never happens. Awesome to hear!
I know, right? crazy circumstances
SO GLAD YOU GOT YOUR BIKES BACK!
Me too!!
Good on you. Happy to see you got your bikes back.
Dammit Ryan. Now you have me shopping for a new bike. I am forsaking my Surly Pugsly for the Trek. Merry Christmas and thank you for all your hard work on these videos.
haha, sorry! This is a pretty sweet ride for sure
Ryan talking to his brother you could tell his heart was jumpin out of his chest. He wanted to get this guy.
Glad you got your bikes back Ryan!
Me too
Hey man I lost my Giant TCR 2013 model a few years ago.
Great story and outcome! So glad you got them both back.
That's awesome! Hope to see some new adventure content with you riding the 1120 again soon. As a side note, I'm currently saving up to buy an 1120 to commute to work on and do some bike packing trips. All because of your videos.
Very cool! you'll love that bike!
Hey Ryan so happy that you got your bike back.
Power of the community helped you in this. Noone can do all alone.
We all need people Ryan because we are humans.
For the good times to celebrate stg and for the bad times to ask for help.
Great, great news.
I agree with all that!
This is good news. I really really really wish you didn't need to make this video and never had it stolen. Bicycle theft should be a felony straight away. It is so selfish and cruel. They don't know how much we love our bicycles...and car drivers have no idea how common this is. :(
Glad you got your bikes back Ryan, it’s a great story. I also enjoyed how you threw in the clip from The Usual Suspects. Kudos to that!!
aw man its nice that this has a happy story I had one wheel stolen from my car and man that sucked so bad... put me back on debt I didn't wat etc.
I am so devastated and don't know what to do, but this video is giving me some hope to eventually find our stolen bikes.
oh no!! I'm sorry to hear that, I really hope you find your bikes
Unbelievable!
Many recall that initial video-
Onward-
So glad this whole ordeal is finally taken care of!!! You and that bike have got some catching up for you!!
Awesome news Ryan!! And I agree, hope you never have to make another video like this again. Cheers and happy pedaling!
Thanks, so happy to have it back!
I’m just seeing this. How amazing is that! So happy for you! See, good people get good back. 🚲 🚲 yipeeeee!
sorry about your bad news but guy, sounds like u had a reverse Christmas! But, u got Em back in the end!
I'm so psyched!
Wow! What a story, thanks for sharing that. Happy trails
I don't even ride bikes but you hypnotized me with your eyes and now I'm subbed ;)
;)
YEESSS!! As soon as I saw the video title, I literally jumped up with excitement for you Ryan! So glad you got it back. Long live the 1120
So cool that the Boulder PD actually worked this case!
wow... glad to hear that Ryan. Nice story!
I did a video about locks...but not new tech, that would be interesting. Bike Index is pretty cool, have you checked it out?
Woot. At this point I thought there was no chance on getting the 1120 back. Get that baby fixed up and take it on another epic journey just get another saddle this time.go for a brooks.
Heck yeeeaaahh! Almost 2 yrs but back in your hands.👊
