This was an excellent and informative presentation! If I may offer one small correction, I believe at 26:08 this is actually a depiction of Gojo-bashi. I've seen various depictions and writings eluding to there not being a grand bridge built at Shijo-dori until very late in the 18th century, or even possibly turn of the 19th century (?) Often it is depicted as a split foot bridge down into and out of the riverbed instead. It isn't depicted that way in this screen, it being a minor enough landmark to completely ignore it here, I think.
I'm slowly going through all your presentations, and I'm enjoying them a lot.

Ah excellent. Thank you so much. Let me have a little look at it. Absolutely, you are correct, the bridges at Sanjo and Gojo were Shogunate supported as they were on major roads and were impressive. You are also absolutely correct that early Shijo Bridges (going back to 1142) were simple affairs, probably just simple scaffolding over the river. Let me have a look at the history of the Shijo Bridge - I won't be in Kyoto until October so it might take me a little time. Thank you thank you - you have no idea how much it means. John

Hello, I just checked with Professor Okudaira and it is indeed Gojo Bridge, not Shijo. My mistake, and thank you so much for picking it up. Excellent work.

@@WalksofJapan It's been many years since I last visited Kyoto, so I am reminiscing vicariously through your research. Good luck and I hope you have an enjoyable trip!
