For starters find out where you're at, is it the back lash you need to put a dial indicator on it to determine that. See if the backlash? Is within tolrance? If it is within tolrance. Move onto the pinion it could be as simple as the pinion nut backing off. You need a inch pound beam tourqe wrench to determine pinion bearing preload, to determine what to do next.
shimming the pinion will only set your pinion depth for gear mesh, shimming your axle bearing shims will increase or decrease your pinion depth. you'll need to know what your backlash is suppose to be and measure it. it looks like it could be a bit loose but you won't be able to know until you measure it
I know. I had to take it apart to do some diagnostics, and you are correct. Need to make some adjustments. Thanks for the reply, appreciate the comments.
Have not got that far...worse probs. Spun a bearing now....damn... it's a full time job...I need to become a mechanic and have the time energy equipment needed to perform tasks....but I know all the things I need to do to resolve the probs... thanks for your interest...
that sure is some Wiggle in that Rearend.!! ...couldnt help it. :-) I dont have an answer on this, sorry . we are still waiting to blow out the stock rear so we can upgrade what is broken. lol. thats how weve been building this one. This is brand new terrian for me, but I am very interested in the responses you get on this. I know ours is on the fix it list soon . Good luck with this, keep us posted please on what you come up with. Cheers Brother!!!!!!!
I love your truck and the way you beat her up...me, I am ready to, and have been a little abusive to my girl, but always trying to improve her and make her better and treat her with love and care... I am so torn..... Anyway, I am going to do basically an overhaul of this rear, near bearings and races and seals plus set up according to specs.. good project, yet another thing do...
Clint Schoenthaler It is close, but when I put it in gear, depending on RPM, will either hit softly or more sharply, but still a little bit a play. I do need to shim it, however, difficult to do stuff in my apt. building garage. Need appropriate facilities...still driveable it is my daily driver now, was supposed to be a cruiser...
Tim Bowers I hear you brother....it is all about the shimming....nothing else matters. You get the shimming all sorted out and everything is good as gold!!

i dont think thats a pinion adjustment problem. carrier needs to be shimmed to control backlash.
you have no pinion preload also. the pinion is supposed to stay still.

@@1Patient i didnt know this till about a month ago till i rebuilt my diff
Got to shim the pinion to Mate to the ring gear.
Did shimming it fix the problem?

Seems about right to me...

Your crush sleeve probably needs to be replaced
Thank you for viewing and commenting. I have moved on from this project.
that is back lash you are hearing sounds too much!
Thanks for the feed back....
You have too much backlash.
