People are commenting that them talking about hair is disconnected. If you listened to what they were saying, you'd know it's an issue many women of color face and just another obstacle that gets thrown in their face. The hair and makeup is a small portion of their talk and there is at least one other video that covers other issues for those that think this one is beneath them. Maybe having your hair policed isn't a problem at your work place but it is for them and many others.
White women are not asked to bring their own “wardrobe” or do their own hair and makeup before their pictures are taken. Women who are not accustomed to having professional photos taken are unaware of “angles and lighting” and how those can alter a person’s appearance. That cover was dark, and she looked harsh and defiant, but she doesn’t come across that way in the video. The photo doesn’t display who she is and give us a glimpse of the real woman. It shows us who Time magazine thinks she is. I think, this is an example of systemic racism. It’s insidious in our culture and we don’t often see it much less understand it as white and privileged people. And we are privileged in our culture compared to how black and brown folks are treated…..still. Thanks for your comment.
