Given that self custody doesn’t scale for precious metals, why would anyone expect history to not repeat itself if they were used for money (at scale) again? The custodians/banks would just start lending it out and people would again treat IOUs as deposits, and deposits as money.

I totally agree. When gold gets over $5000oz. the jewelry industry will shift to platinum as it has before and it will become more expensive.

Here in Australia; silver coins prior to 1946 were 92.5% silver. Between 1946 and 1966 they were 50% silver.
In the US they were 90% until 1964 after they whacked Kennedy
