That was really great to hear you speak Brett. You said it perfectly when finding the intersection of your heart and what the world needs. I needed to see this interview today because making documentaries is not easy:)
For everyone that is confused, he explains it briefly at 9:20 - His method was to create the film independently, acquire a theatrical distributor, build up an audience, and then use the distributor to pitch to Netflix based off of its theatrical success. It’s very unlikely a first time filmmaker will be able to approach Netflix directly, especially due to their “previous collaborator” policy, meaning you must have someone in above line crew that has worked on a Netflix film before. In my opinion, your best best is to create a film for theatrical release with a distributor attached, and regardless of its run, pitch it to Netflix through your distributor: (your approach will be ultimately more legitimate than approaching cold). Good luck!
In 2016 I came up with this really cool film script for an animated cartoon and I have showed it to my close friends and family, and they said it was original and had a good plot. Ever since then I turned my idea into an 100 paged script and I want to find out how I can submit it to Netflix and see if they think it's worth to be made into a cartoon film.
This is a really inspirational video. Your ability to bring out the essence in an artist's pursuit is wonderful. Thanks for producing this interview video
It's pretty interesting. It's like a wedding film about what people associate with Batman. He could employ many of the exact same memetics of wedding films, and just apply it to a different topic. Well, obviously it works! It's a genre that obviously lends itself well to emotional, human portraitures.
This is one of the best interviews I have ever seen, I think this is an incredible take on the subject. Brett you have an incredible story. Thank you for the inspiration. Well done Art of Photography
How about audio? I do have the S1H which is approved but I use Pluraleyes for audio sync... Will Netflix not take my film because I don’t use timecode? Is Pluraleyes good enough?
This is amazing, really like this interview!!!Never heard of Brett Culp before, but im definetly gonna watch one of his documentaries now!! Thanks Ted!!!
Someone saw my podcast NDE TV and read my book "The Will of a Wildflower " and then watched your video. They emailed me and said my book needs to be a series and sent me a link to this video. I am waiting for the day when the average person has the ability to do that. Most of us have the desire but not the talent. I am hoping someone makes a template that helps the amateur create movies. So many of us long to see our books on a big screen.
All i got from this video is mix the bad with the good. Bad being your (Passion) and Good being what the people need. But above all Great speech im inspired to look for more information.
this is incredible.. and literally a few thousand people only saw this video on youtube youtube algorithm at its finest. at a loss. I hope more people find this video, cuz they need to see this! :)
Good stuff. This is the reason I watch Ted/TAOP. It goes into the "why", not just the how. Plus it's nice to see good people, do good stuff and get good results. Slow Clap for you folks.
Feels. Such feels. Thank you for this uplifting and insightful interview. It is so admirable how you are often willing to feature others, retreating behind the camera to let others shine. Very cool.
What an awesome video! Ted, thanks for making it possible and Brett, man, thanks for sharing your noble art and kindness. I learned a lot! Great video!
Phenomenal...lot of truth and inspiration in this interview. I want to share this a few places but the title of the video restricts me from being able to do so. PLEASE can you possible upload another with different title? I get the angle and it makes sense but I simply cannot get this amazing story and message out to the 30k members of our Guild with the current title. PLEASE!
I really loved this story and it's very inspiring in a way! However there was affordable cameras long before dslrs that was able to capture good stories (without blurry background). That being said many of us including my self get out and play more when we get hold of some new toys. :) Just recently i got some crazy idea to shoot and edit a movie entirely on iPhone 4 from 2010. I can't say that it become a masterpiece but it did worked. The problem now days is that Netflix and some other guys have some nonsense technical requirements but what about right tool for telling a story? I don't think that many will stay and watch some boring story no matter how nice image it is.
Thank you Ted, this was a super interisting interview and it's beyond inspiring to see and hear this level of enthusiasm from someone who clearly puts his whole heart out to what he does.
No offense to you guys but I felt that the title and thumbnail was a bit misleading pertaining to the video I was thinking of a more detailed business-savvy video then a motivational one
WOW! That is the most positive thing I have seen in quite some time. Thank you, Ted, for sharing with us and thank you Brett for all you do. The world needs more of this right now and always. 🙏
An amazing and powerful interview. Beyond what I expected. Thank you both, Brett Young for being so positively alive with passion and you for having the interview and sharing.

How are people not liking these touching videos, how miserable are people that they can see the negative or choose negativity.

Great perspective. Tell stories that help people see themselves in ways they've never seen themselves. Dope

Both films are no longer on Netflix UK- sadly
This guy is truly wise
Thank you got to think outside the box!
So, to get a documentary onto NETFLIX we need to create a movie about Batman and kids with cancer that goes viral. It’s THAT simple.
No. To get a documentary on Netflix you have to make something that people care about.
Awesome!
