Gettin' Ready (a less ambitious song with a simple yet mesmerizing solo that might be appropriate for smooth jazz, the sonic quality of this song is just amazing) 7. Mother Mary (I'd pick the riff to this over Natural Thing as a prime example of how heavy rock should be done) 6. Queen of the Deep (one of Schenker's epic-length solos that might even rival Rock Bottom; I think the Zeppelin-like folk-ish verses that lead to the heavy-hitting chorus riff make a huge statement as well) 5. Born to Lose (a melodic masterpiece with one of Michael's best solos, without a doubt) 4. I'm a Loser (almost strange that it's a top-five for me, but this song has everything I always loved about riff-based bands like The Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and Schenker's solo here has parts that might be technically very much ground-breaking for its time) 3. Rock Bottom (This is THE Schenker guitar song people need to be introduced first, a timeless classic and a highly influential solo for metal guitarists) 2. Lights Out (Maybe the UFO song that screams classic metal the most, the chords, the keyboards, the galloping guitar segments and Phil Mogg's vocal performance make this one of their edgiest and most dynamic songs) 1. Space Child (One of their most underrated tracks in my opinion, I absolutely love the folk-ish progressions in this, plus the solo is probably my favorite from Schenker despite it being lesser known; I think it's incredible how it focuses on combining small snippets of melody to make a long fluid line that almost tells a musical story, rather than just a solo revolving around licks... This is a hidden masterpiece to me...)

I'll admit it, I love those first three Mick Bolton-era albums almost as much as the other stuff. Prince Kajuku and that cover of Loving Cup by the Paul Butterfield blues band are just so great, in my opinion.

I like the Four Chapman albums as they were my introduction to the band. After Making Contact I went back and discovered the Schenker stuff. Great stuff. But I caught the Chapman years pretty much in REAL TIME!! Like they were MINE!!!

Hey, Pete!! First video I've seen of yours in a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it, of course. I like watching your vids on bands of whom I've been aware but never really got into them for whatever reason. Like with UFO. I only really know "Rock Bottom" and "Too Hot Too Handle." (Love them both, and I had figured that "Rock Bottom" was gonna take the top slot.) But with you covering the band here, I feel I know just a tiny bit more about them than I did. 👍

Strangers is my all time favourite live album, so could easily have just gone for 10 from there, but that wouldn’t be fair on Tonka (the live tracks on the original Headstone release were pretty special too). Hell yea Pete great choice. I mentioned Pack it up and Go right with with you. Schenker is absolutely merciless on that. I remember hearing Let it Roll coming out of my brothers room back in '75 and totally being floored and decided I wanted to play guitar. Me and you are on the same level. Walk on Water is an excellent album. It's more for the song and not so much crazy ass guitar solos. I thought . Check out the live set of all the live shows they recorded for the SITN. The Louiville KY set is just killer. You can find it from Amazon. Rock on!

Your assessment of Doctor Doctor is spot on. The solo on only you can rock me is for me the best, although not the best track on obsession. For me that is almost impossible to choose as every track is killer.

I love those albums, I remember when they came out, Michael with UFO and Rudolph with Scorpions awesome times. I've got Strangers in the Night on CD and LP, I like the LP better even though it is a little shorter. You could take the top 10 and mix it up every day and I would have no problem.
Hard to argue with your list so I'll just say that Boogie from UFO 1 deserves mention. Also, Space Child would rank really high for me. Schenker's solo in this song is one of my favs of his. It's atypical since it isn't a blistering jam, instead it's slow and more melodic but, damn, it works!
Although I don't own every UFO album on CD, my favorites are Force It and Obsession. I also like their first two experimental albums UFO 1 and UFO 2: Flying. What about 1980's No Place To Run that features the single "Young Blood." I saw them live on their You Are Here tour at the Club Casino Ballroom in Salisbury, MA. I also saw my favorite group Blue Oyster Cult there too.

Apt life but a warm up/run thru and i sorta still got 'em ;)
Mother Mary and This Kids are in my top 5, alongside Rock Bottom and Lights out. The 5th one must come from Force it, their best album in my opinion. Obsession is a great album, but the production is kinda strange. The guitars sound very different. Ron Nevison (producer) almost made them sound like the Babys on their Broken Heart album, which he also produced one year earlier. I test you, play those two albums side by side, and you will see what I mean. Nowhere to run is a great album. Very underrated and Paul Chapman does amazing filling in the hole left behind by Schenker.
Even more so on Babys Head First album. There are moments that I almost think I’m listening to the Obsession album. Don’t get me wrong, all those late seventies Ron Nevison albums are fantastic. But I prefer UFO with a darker production.
Sorry to insist. Just had a listen to Freedom at point zero by Jefferson Starship (same era, same producer). The guitar sound is again identical to the one in my other 2 posts. Works really well for the poppier rock bands, but it doesn’t do credit to Michael Schenker. His style needs a heavier, darker in your face production. That’s why for me Obsession always sounds a bit untypical for UFO.

The 70's had so many great bands. Not all can be as big as Led Zeppelin but I agree.. UFO should have been bigger! I like the fact that UFO is still going and so is Michael Schenker with all his projects. Damn shame about Ted McKenna too. Gone way to early! With UFO I might be in minority but I really love all the softer/slow tracks. Try Me, Love to Love, Lipstick Traces, Born To Lose, Belladonna, Dreaming of Summer, Martian Landscape. So tasty!

I like the Four Chapman albums as they were my introduction to the band. After Making Contact I went back and discovered the Schenker stuff. Great stuff. But I caught the Chapman years pretty much in REAL TIME!! Like they were MINE!!!

Hey, Pete!! First video I've seen of yours in a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it, of course. I like watching your vids on bands of whom I've been aware but never really got into them for whatever reason. Like with UFO. I only really know "Rock Bottom" and "Too Hot Too Handle." (Love them both, and I had figured that "Rock Bottom" was gonna take the top slot.) But with you covering the band here, I feel I know just a tiny bit more about them than I did. 👍

Strangers is my all time favourite live album, so could easily have just gone for 10 from there, but that wouldn’t be fair on Tonka (the live tracks on the original Headstone release were pretty special too). I saw them live and the whole time I was waiting for my favorite song Doctor Doctor. When their set ended I was ready to go home disappointed. But then then the encore started and that was the first song they played. Super underrated band.

I'll tell ya Pete I just recently started getting into this band because I know your love for them. They have a song called The Writer from Mechanix that simply rocks. What a great riff.
Hell yea Pete great choice. I mentioned Pack it up and Go right with with you. Schenker is absolutely merciless on that. I remember hearing Let it Roll coming out of my brothers room back in '75 and totally being floored and decided I wanted to play guitar. Me and you are on the same level. Walk on Water is an excellent album. It's more for the song and not so much crazy ass guitar solos. I thought . Check out the live set of all the live shows they recorded for the SITN. The Louiville KY set is just killer. You can find it from Amazon. Rock on!

Your assessment of Doctor Doctor is spot on. The solo on only you can rock me is for me the best, although not the best track on obsession. For me that is almost impossible to choose as every track is killer.

My band back in the day used to play "Makin' Moves." On occasion, we told the crowd it was an original... lol. Sadly, no one knew any better.
I love those albums, I remember when they came out, Michael with UFO and Rudolph with Scorpions awesome times. I've got Strangers in the Night on CD and LP, I like the LP better even though it is a little shorter. You could take the top 10 and mix it up every day and I would have no problem.

Hard to argue with your list so I'll just say that Boogie from UFO 1 deserves mention. Also, Space Child would rank really high for me. Schenker's solo in this song is one of my favs of his. It's atypical since it isn't a blistering jam, instead it's slow and more melodic but, damn, it works!
Although I don't own every UFO album on CD, my favorites are Force It and Obsession. I also like their first two experimental albums UFO 1 and UFO 2: Flying. What about 1980's No Place To Run that features the single "Young Blood." I saw them live on their You Are Here tour at the Club Casino Ballroom in Salisbury, MA. I also saw my favorite group Blue Oyster Cult there too.
former teenage Holland headbanger here -- as a teenager I always noticed the cool UFO album covers but at the time I couldn't really get into them, UFO seemed kinda tame compared to the other stuff that was coming out at that time (Ace of Spades; Killers etc). But recently I ended up listening to the live album and I got it, it's Michael Schenker's playing, full of attack

Mother Mary and This Kids are in my top 5, alongside Rock Bottom and Lights out. The 5th one must come from Force it, their best album in my opinion. Obsession is a great album, but the production is kinda strange. The guitars sound very different. Ron Nevison (producer) almost made them sound like the Babys on their Broken Heart album, which he also produced one year earlier. I test you, play those two albums side by side, and you will see what I mean.
Nowhere to run is a great album. Very underrated and Paul Chapman does amazing filling in the hole left behind by Schenker.
Even more so on Babys Head First album. There are moments that I almost think I’m listening to the Obsession album. Don’t get me wrong, all those late seventies Ron Nevison albums are fantastic. But I prefer UFO with a darker production.
Sorry to insist. Just had a listen to Freedom at point zero by Jefferson Starship (same era, same producer). The guitar sound is again identical to the one in my other 2 posts. Works really well for the poppier rock bands, but it doesn’t do credit to Michael Schenker. His style needs a heavier, darker in your face production. That’s why for me Obsession always sounds a bit untypical for UFO.

The 70's had so many great bands. Not all can be as big as Led Zeppelin but I agree.. UFO should have been bigger! I like the fact that UFO is still going and so is Michael Schenker with all his projects. Damn shame about Ted McKenna too. Gone way to early! With UFO I might be in minority but I really love all the softer/slow tracks. Try Me, Love to Love, Lipstick Traces, Born To Lose, Belladonna, Dreaming of Summer, Martian Landscape. So tasty!
