  • In part two we completely strip this amp down to the chassis. All the components inside this amp had to be replaced because of the oil that had been sprayed in to it. We rebuild this amp and solve some of the safety problems along the way.

Came in as a train wreck, and went out as a nice amp! Good solid rebuild Mart. Nice playing as usual of course.

I miss the old ironing board workbench and display shelf. You'd have ruined the ironing board with all the oily crud on the chassis though. This was a herculean labour of love. Well done! 😅👍

Hello Rob. Ah, the ironing board. I will have to dig it out. Yes, all that oil would have been a disaster. It was a lot of work but it was a fun one. Thanks Rob and take care.

Another well thought out restoration Martyn. I would love to hear it with a more conventional tone arrangement and reduced coupling caps. As it is, with the excess bass and reduced gain coming out of the the tone stack it would probably make a handy amp for a harmonica microphone.

Hello mark, thank you. I think you are right it would make a good gob iron amp. Stay tuned. I am waiting for call from the customer about the tone stack. Take care Mark.

    Awesome project !!
I can't imagine why all that oil was in there ..

Hello, thank you. It's not the first amp I have seen full oil. No idea what the logic is. Take care.

Banging an old drum here but... The preamp bypass cap controls the bass cutoff knee. Reducing that cap saves producing waste power and tone into inaudible bass frequencies. There is a calculator online that shows the cutoff curve with various cap values. How about a Marshall tone stack with a stack bypass toggle as a pull pot?

Hello Rob. I will have look online at that. The tone stack bypass is a great idea. I did bypass it with a jumper. The difference was massive. A Marshall tone stack off the 18 watter might be a plan. Take care.

You put an awful lot of work into that amp Martyn.. I agree with your final assessment . It has to much bass and attenuation through the existing tone stack arrangement. I remember a bass player in the early 1960's had a similar amp he used for practice at home. He ask if I'd like to try my guitar through it. My impression, ( don't forget we knew diddly squat about anything back then), was that it was 'muddy' with guitar, but sounded ok with his bass guitar. I wish I could remember the make, but I do recall it had a 'Made in Italy' tag on the front. It'll be interesting to hear the owners comments.

There's a way you can translate with your phone. You take a photo of the text and it can be translated.

      That's great, thanks Martyn.
The Elpico is running no problem but it definitely needs work to get it sounding it's best.
