The rule of thumb is hard on soft, soft on hard. Closed fist (hard) on soft targets (abdomen, groin, etc), open hand (soft) on hard targets (head, ribs, etc).
I am a 60 year martial artist with arthritis in my middle and index fingers. A full fist punch can be painful but vertical ones, not has much. The hammer is one of my go to strikes or back fist. Some palm strikes. Elbow strikes are my knockouts. Being a smaller man, I need to get in close and that's how I train. This is also great for grappling set ups. I will slap the piss out of you if it's an option. Sounds feminine but it hurts.
Being a medic in my early training and now in my training with self defense. I teach students to train with both open and closed hands. Most of my students don't have time to train their fists to strike hard objects. So I teach them to strike hard boney areas with open strikes and soft targets with fists. Great video. Thank you for all you do.
I like both closed fists to body open hand hacks chops to neck and face. Palmstrike as well.hammerfist as well.keep up the good work paul and kali center
Thank you for this video, Paul. This past Thursday in Premium class of Elite Martial Arts, I just started to learn Stick and Dagger for this whole month of November until I test for a blue belt next month in MMA class, Paul.
As a completely new person to kali and self defense. The soft method seems like a good way to start. Like anything else you practice, continuously learning is essential. And hard will come eventually for myself. thank you for your videos
I'm always going to start open hands, up as if I don't want any trouble but ready to cover or block. I never present a fighting stance! I don't want an attacker to know I'm ready to fight. Open hands raised, try to de-escalate but kept them just inside my power range. 2nd Dan here.
Nice combo, As a old life time Martial Artist it's instinct to throw boxing punches to the head. But I tell my students to use hammer fists or palm strikes for the head and save closed fists for the body. I believe Uppercuts can be closed fist, as the danger is in striking the forhead and breaking your hand! What do you think? I too think that Kali arm is a cool training aid!

There are many different styles of Filipino Martial Arts. They all differ from one another in different ways while having a few main principles that usually cross over.
@@kalicenter Something I love about FMA is that so many influences from Asia and Europe have influenced them. They've taken more formal and stylized systems, and given them more flexibility and spontaneity in the attack. The weapon influence is very apparent. I've studied some European arts, and FMA have very similar principles. Both cultures were influenced by edged weapons. And today both have adopted modern tools like firearms and collapsible batons.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love these empty hand fighting drills, whether it'd be closed-fist or open-fist, along with elbow strikes.
🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I am a fan of both strikes. This is an outstanding video. 🙏🏿🇺🇸
I like using both forms of open hand techniques.
Got to go with the flow. Which ever is appropriate.
I love the technique and combination.

2:51 Hammer fist or bolo punch and its depends upon the arm length
It's interesting you mentioned Taekwondo I have a Tkd back ground and ive always thought that Tkd blocks can also be used as striking techniques

So true! 👍🏻🙏🏻
I wish you would come to Turkey and teach us the kali style.
both
Both...
That hammer blow to the ear is very dangerous 😳
Where can I get one of the kali arms?
Closed or open hands, both are preferrable and useful for offensive and defensive strikes.
I agree
Open hands for the face. Fists for the body.
👍🏻👍🏻
Where'd u get the spring that holds the stick?
I'd say it depends on the situation
👍👍👍👍👍

GR8 vDo man
I myself like open empty hands.
👍🏻🙏🏻
Open hands to prevent broken metacarpals.
Was assaulted 2 weeks ago. Will soak this up now.....
Drop your elbows, relax your traps and lateral delts.
👍🏻
Who is your master? Johan Skalberg?
👍🌹
🙏🏻
Without a Partner it just look nice
Open hand
I think it's important to know how to use both. The rule of thumb for me is hard weapons to soft targets, soft weapons to hard targets.
