  • If you've ever been discouraged from planting an apple tree because you only have room for one and thought you needed a second tree for pollination then look no further! Multi-grafted fruit trees are a great way to ensure pollination, extend your growing season, and save on space! Today I'll take you on a bit of a "tour" of my multi-grafted apple tree, or, "frankentree" that houses nearly 20 varieties so far. I'm looking forward to some new varieties of apples this year and even more in the future!

You've got some great varieties there!! I grabbed a bunch of mine from Steven this year as well. He sent me a ton of rare stuff last minute that I am super excited about. I'd love to do some trades next spring if you'd be interested? So glad I found another apple dude to watch!! Always fun to see what other people have going on!

I think so too, though I guess I won't know for sure until I taste them! I'm certainly open to do trades! I had some success on ebay this year, but hope to be on top of selling and trading a bit more next year. I noticed from your grafting video we have a few in common from Steven, but definitely plenty of good trading options if we can get them to grow enough! I guess that will be one advantage of my frankentree having nearly no fruit on it from the freeze - more growth to the grafts! Gotta look at the positives, right?

You actually remembered labels at the end there 😂. But seriously good luck with the Frankentree!

Yeah, I was proud of me too! That happens way too often... I was also lucky enough to have some old footage where I could see that King David was what I grafted on the first untagged scion and the rest was just deduction!

Where do you get your cuttings from? Thanks!

Great question! I've ordered from Maple Valley Orchards, Burnt Ridge Nursery, taken cuttings from trees at a friend's house, and traded with people on the North American Scion Exchange on facebook! There are more places than those though, I'm sure!

When do you take the parafilm off?

I usually don't. The buds are able to push through the parafilm and the sun can also cause it to break down. I clean up what parafilm is left often the next spring when adding in new grafts.

most if not all of the grafts will be thrown off by the stronger original branches: youjustwaitandsee
