How Quickly Can A Graft Bear Fruit?

This spring I added several more varieties to my multi-grafted apple tree. Each scion I grafted was split in two as each came to me about ten inches long so there was adequate material for redundancy. Since the grafts seemed to be doing well, I decided to allow the two varieties that pushed out flowers from the scion to produce fruit. Kerry's Irish Pippin bore apples on both grafts - not surprising as it is at least a partial tip bearer. But I removed the apple from one graft and not the other. Unfortunately bugs got into those apples before they were ripe and they were unable to ripen. However, the Carolina Red June bore fruit and that's what I'll show you today. While I wasn't terribly impressed with it's flavor, I had left it on the tree just a little bit too long so I am hopeful that next year will be a lot better. My guess is that just as my Gravenstein's flavor diminishes as it gets overripe, so does the Carolina Red June's. But overall, it was awesome to see that fruit had no issues forming on the newly grafted branch and that the graft is still growing very well!

I had Rubinette grafts two years ago that flowered and had apples the first year. Unfortunately, raccoons got them before they ripened. I have some Goldrush scions that I just grafted that are blooming.

Yeah, mine vary, even when I graft onto my mature tree. Some scions were too small, so they spent the second year growing bigger. Others had fruit 1 year after grafting but the fruit fell off. 1 of those had good fruit 2 years after grafting. I propped it up to prevent it bending. Some are vigorous and some not at all. So it varies, but min 2 years after gradting.
