Larusso, after winning the tournament against Barnes, remained idle for many years, without any training, just recreational practices (For example, when he did Kata together with Samantha.) Just like Johnny in season 1 appeared to be rusty with Karate (He stopped fighting after Karate Kid 1, 1984.)

If you want clearer evidence, remember how Robby attacked Johnny in S3 E10 and Johnny accidentally slammed him into the wall, knocking him out? Now imagine if Johnny was actually trying, exactly. Robby would be dead. That just shows the power level differences between a teenage student and an adult Sensei in the Miyagi-Verse.
