He has been whining about this for 50 years. Fogerty's brother was the main one who was complaining about wanting more input and he had already quit the band. John was the one that demanded that the two surviving members write their own stuff and that he would refuse to sing on it. He said if they didn't do it that he would end the band, then Fogerty spends the next 50 years complaining about it. They also told him he should hire a lawyer before signing a deal with Saul Zaentz and he laughed at them.
I agree with your assessment, the others in ccr give john fogerty credit, they realize he was the engine but a car still needs wheels, a body and a transmission to work, and ccr was a sound only created by original 4, regardless of what fogerty says.

@subg8858 I think his bands were better after the breakup. Notice the rest of the bands careers died when he said goodbye. He wrote all the great songs and would have had as much success without them in his life.
Interesting that John says he's become more reflective in recent years. His latest memoir has some seriously nasty comments about both Doug and Stu, particularly Doug. He absolutely burned any possible bridge with that thing. He doesn't seem to be over it at all.
I'm a strong believer that if something isn't broken, you shouldn't try to fix it. The incredible success of CCR is ample evidence that the band was doing the right thing, whatever that was. Damn shame egos got involved and brought the CCR musical juggernaut crashing to the ground.
I still have my entire CCR record collection that started of course in 1968 with their very first album. Saw them twice, 1970 and 1972 in the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston Texas. Their legendary album from 1970, "COSMO'S FACTORY", is STILL, 54 years later.... the greatest studio-recorded album in rocknroll history. I love many CCR recordings, but if I have to name my very favorite, I will have to say it's the frantic, fast & furious rock shouter "Travelin' Band" 🎸🎸🥁🎸 R. I. P. Tom Fogerty
Read thru Fogerty's entire book before he finally confessed he was an alcoholic. Wonder how much this influenced his decisions? I think the real people getting hurt here are John's biological sons. Why do we never hear from the children of his first marriage? What about his current sons/bandmates? Especially the one that looks like Stu Cook; why don't they go on record and state their feelings about this family feud? Ok, maybe Uncle Tom died before they were born, but if it was me, I could not play CCR songs for a living on stage without feeling a kinship toward Stu and Cosmo. I would want to reach out to them, get to know them and hear their side of the story.
THE REAL STORY: John signed a bad record deal and then blew up his own band to get out of it. Then acts surprised and hurt when his unemployed bandmates (which included his own brother) sold thier interests in CCR to make money. A great band destroyed by one (1) man's ego.
John made made the band successful. He didn’t want it to end! OBTW, they all signed the “record” deal! OBTW, from the get go they denied selling voting rights, then they finally admitted it! Great comment on Fogerty selling out his band mates . Don't sign record deals when your in over your head. Great singer, great song writer, BAD at business management . And did'nt the bass player have a business degree ?
This is the most delusional comment section I’ve ever seen. Every single one of them completely ignored how Fogerty acted back then, which is weird because Fogerty admits himself the problems HE created. Maybe if the dude wasn’t a complete controlling psychopath this wouldn’t have happened. It always takes 2 sides, but apparently the commenters who came to this video have no clue what reality is actually like. So disappointed in humanity.
Finally! Someone else who knows! I agree with you, from what I’ve read Fogerty was a controlling dick who wouldn’t let his bandmates write anything. Why would they want to stay with Fogerty and the band if they couldn’t try to write songs themselves? Even if they maybe weren’t as good. It’s no wonder they took the money and ran. Nice to know someone isnt jumping on the Fogerty bandwagon.

The "management" went the same way that it has gone since the beginning. They were manipulated, lied to , and turned against each other. The culprit then runs off with their money. It's been happening for thousand of years and whenever someone spots it, they convince you that you are imagining it.

There was that famous tale about when Fogerty hopped onstage at a Taj Mahal show after being ribbed by Bob Dylan (who joined him along with George Harrison) that if he didn't play a CCR song, people would remember "Proud Mary" as a song by Tina Turner. Saul Zaentz and Stan Polley standing next to each other shoveling coal into the fires of hell. With CCR it was a combination of egos (ALL of them) and the ego of the main talent (John) had all of the leverage. In the end it was just a shame that the brothers never reconciled before Tom's death. The other two have told their side and, to me, John's carries a heavier weight of truth. But, as this comments section illustrates, everyone has their own opinions. CCR will always be my favorite band. Willy and the Poor Boys was the first rock album I ever bought and I wore it out. I soon bought all of the rest of the albums and loved them all, even Mardi Gras. Lookin' for a Reason, Tearin' Up the Country, Someday Never Comes, Hello Mary Lou, Door to Door and Sweet Hitch-Hiker were all pretty good tunes. Anyway, glad John got his music back eventually.

Meanwhile he's a successful musician and millionaire who lives in a 21 million dollar mansion in LA. Just give it a rest for fuck's sake. He acts like he's the only musician that ever signed a bad contract or feuded with his band.
I wonder if John Fogerty, Harrison Ford, and Steve Martin ever got to meet the birth parents who gave them up for adoption, thus splitting the triplets up.
Fogerty is one of the greatest songwriters & Rock n Roll artists. He also was/is a ruthless individual towards his brothers and band mates. read Bad Moon Rising. many greats are ruthless about their art, but Fogerty was a Statue of Liberty-sized jerk about it. he literally told the RRHoF committee that he would not attend the award ceremony if any of the other members of CCR were there, his brother Tom not being a problem because he was dead (not having received a kind word from John in decades). it was the most depressing book about RnR I’ve ever read, including for the one about Badfinger. I guess Fogerty just put every last tally whacker drip of soul, passion, compassion, love, etc. into his great (until after Creedence broke up) songs. he sings so powerfully that he could’ve been in AC/DC (where Malcolm would have killed him) but he talks like Mickey Mouse. and he let his wife talk him into doing the nerd gtr tapping.
You really need to read Fogerty's own book to get the other side of the story. Trust me when I say, there was enough fault to be spread all around in the tempestuous CCR saga. JC had no corner on that market, as his band mates were not without their own sins.
@@bjr4567 hello. You are absolutely right. I do need to read his autobio and I have it queued up now. It will be further interesting to see the real down in the weeds story about the publishing struggles from his perspective. Thanks, ha ha for not yelling at me for being an old grump.

The Creedence song Someday Will Never Come was written by Fogerty and is autobiographical. A self damning confession of abandonment of his wife and son to the allure of fame. Stark. Cold. It’s an important clue in understanding the character of these adversaries.
I play music. Have been in several bands over the years. Musicians are a different breed. Creative differences. Difference in personal prefered music. Just two of the obstacles in band life. Most bands are not long term. Enjoy them while you can.
I have heard over the years that JF was "a great songwriter for his time." Nonsense! An argument can easily be made that he was the best ever, because he never wrote a bad song. "For his time." His songs are timeless, and he's more than just a writer. His vibrato and melodies are off-the-charts astonishing! I suppose he and Van Morrison stand side-by-side as the two stalwarts that no one has yet to challenge as "the greatest ever."
That massive failure called "Mardi Gras" was the straw that broke the band up, and was a crystal clear illustration that Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford were NOT the brilliant singers and songwriters they thought they were.
Its sad and it makes me angry because even now most artists still get ripped off by record companies . There should have been laws passed to protect the artists after what happened to Credence Clearwater Revival . Van Halen never made any money for themselves for the first 4 or 5 albums .
The band mates never realized, They can all be replaced. Without him, there is no band. The band is John's band. Like Paul McCartney and Wings. John Fogerty and CCR.
I'm a drummer, many years ago Another drummer gave me great advice. He said there's only one star in a band and that's the singer. Think of all the great bands. would any of them be where they are without the singer , with rare exception , probably not.
The biggest losers of Johns hiatus from music was us, the fans! He was a prolific sung and wrote some great songs just before he stopped...such a shame!
All you need to know is this - Creedence Clearwater Revival had 5 top 10 albums and 9 top 10 singles. John Fogerty, despite all his self proclaimed magnificence, had 2 top 10 albums and 1 top 10 single. Nuff said.
They didn't really create a new sound or style as much as they adopted and focused their sound on an already made style of rockabilly. For example, Dale Hawkins' own version of "Susie Q" clearly shows what would become a CCR trademark sound.
I've long wondered if he has ever sat down with Dennis DeYoung of Styx to compare notes. Oh, the dynamic is a little different, but there was still tension between the other members of the band and the guy who wrote most of the big hits (I'm not forgetting about "Renegade" and "Blue Collar Man".). I'm not a big fan of "Kilroy was Here", either, I get it, especially the film and the stage theatrics, but I'd like to think that they all got big paychecks to go with the fame that came with the videos being in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day. Regarding Grand Funk, I've always said that I leave it to the viewer as to whether or not Terry Knight experienced karma when he was stabbed to death in Temple, TX.

CCR was my first concert. 1972. Tony Joe White and Freddie King opened. Great show. Tickets back then were three to four dollars. We saw everyone back in those years. Dirt cheap until the '80s.
John initially trusted Saul Zantz. And he got the others to agree on the worst contract in the history of Rock and Roll. I really have serious problems with him because of it. He spent his whole life pissed off and blaming everybody else instead of looking in the mirror and saying, “maybe I should have sought advice from others and slowed down. And maybe I should have kept some friends.” He said the other three sold him out. He sold himself out.
@@davidkirkham6497 Oh, absolutely. And the other 3 understood that. I’m one of those who actually has the experience of reviewing one of those types of contracts and NOT signing it because, well, I did some math in my head and understood we would have to sell over 100k units just to break even for the recording, much less the marketing and such. And the take from tours and merchandising meant a choice between poverty and lower middle class. Yeah. Professor Flo and the example of Fogerty weighed heavily on me.

John Fogerty was the star of the band, the creative force and the true talent. The other members were jealous. There would be no CCR without Fogerty, but the others were all replaceable.
He tried to share the song writing responsibilities in Mardi Gras, and it showed that Fogerty really didn't need the rest of the band and he could surround himself with studio musicians and be better off. Tom, Stu and Doug, brought very little to the band.

It's a shame he withheld CCR on the Woodstock film. CCR was the top act in the world at that time, and the highest paid of any performer(s) at Woodstock.
I want comment about the issues in CCR as I was kid when all that went on..I’ll say this. I have drummed in several small club bands. Never a touring act. But I always took it seriously. In each band I practiced hard and rehearsed a lot. Out of five bands I finally got into one where we had no Prima Donna. I had a awesome guest house on my property. My music room. I graciously allowed ‘our’ band to rehearse there. I owned 95% of the PA and a practice pa…I owned the trailer and truck that hauled it. Never did I pull rank and remind anyone of that. Unless they said ‘my band’ Or took an attitude marginalizing the rest of us. My fav was this idiotic bass player who had the balls to say be was canceling rehearsal and had some guys coming over to my house to jam.. Gets better. And just whose gear do they plan on using. My drums. The guitar and keyboard players rig . Not to mention I had a 10 channel board. Crown heads, monitors Michs. Full la A perfect setup. Ignorant f@#$. I lol. Let me get this straight. Your canceling our practice and you think your bringing people i don’t even know into my home who you are volunteering our gear for them to use. ‘Im the front man. Its my band’. Oh snap I pulled rank. Told him you got one hour to get to your gear off my property or it will by out the road. I was rolling it up the driveway when he as he pulled in. Smh
I don't know how it is today, but back in the late '60s and early-to-late '70s: (e.g.) The Doors SHARED their writing AND publishing equally "Music by the Doors" (except for "Soft Parade") . Credence: My guess is that the leftovers after Zaentz got done pillaging Credence's publishing were NOT shared equally, but instead the majority of any remaining writing/publishing dollars went to John, who wrote the hits. I'd be willing to bet on that. Bands back then used to go through this all the time. In those days (not today) bands didn't make much money on the road (some bands LOST money), yet everyone in the band shares equally in the misery of traveling & touring. Back then the money was in songwriting and publishing. Granted, Zaentz was the bad guy iMHO, but I'll bet John Fogerty kept the songwriting credits and remaining publishing revenues mostly for himself. I've been in a few bands, and I can tell you that not sharing songwriting and publishing revenues is a proven recipe for inter-band squabbling and even eventual hatred & break-up. In our band 3 of us wrote, but we didn't "share" - so if we had lucked out (we didn't) and had a couple hits, our drummer (who didn't write) would have received essentially nothing - even though he worked just as hard (especially on the road) as the rest of us. That would really suck, and MAYBE that's what went on with the other 3 guys in Credence. It would be interesting to see which bands who are successful share, and which ones do not. Sting wrote most of the hits for the Police. Did he share with Copeland & Summers? You tell me. and PS ... if John Fogerty DID share WRITING and publishing dollars (the ones left after Zaentz took his share) with the rest of Credence then please accept my apology.
Wrong.. John shared his song writing royalties with the other 3 up til 1969, despite them not contributing one note to the process, so they became wealthy as a result of his generosity, and yet.. the 3 of them still screwed him over and sided with the record company that shafted him.. so id suggest that it pays to deal with the facts..
I think the other members of the band were correct. by the time they got their shot the band was already so established that it had become so recognized for Fogerty's sound that any attempt by the other band members to be creative would be viewed as a complete deviation from what the public thought the band was. CCR sounds like fogerty that says it all and Fogerty's music is not good enough to carry that band or any other band that's why Fogerty has done nothing but flounder since he left the band.
John needed the rest of ccr to have that unique sound, yes he wrote the songs and sang them, but lennon and mccarney needed george and ringo to make that beatles sound. to me fogerty has been a sour grapes ungrately type of guy. wish him well.
Attempting to equate band members of the Beatles to members of CCR is laughable. All of the Beatle members were successful beyond the band's demise...what the heck did CCR members ever accomplish without Fogerty? I rest my case lol...

EXACTLY.
I agree with your assessment, the others in ccr give john fogerty credit, they realize he was the engine but a car still needs wheels, a body and a transmission to work, and ccr was a sound only created by original 4, regardless of what fogerty says.
stu cook his dad was some what of a music industry Lawyer and stu was suppose too have his dad look over the contract....i guess he never did take it to his father .. he said he did to the others... john was 22 i think and he was the youngest in the band by months only to some others besides his brother he was older by years
john had heard that if people end the band the contract goes awayy and it did for the other members of ccr but not him ..that contract should not be legal simple as that .. write a contract too enslave some one is absurd '' a judge should have decided the contract is unjust and voided it
Not true! They all signed!
They needed John. He didn't need them. This is what John knew, and they realized too late.
If he didn’t need them. why were all the bands that he formed to back him so vastly inferior and he never had anywhere near the level of success again

Stu and Doug were not worthy of wiping Johns boots ... They should have considered how lucky they were to have him ...
Pretty sure other drugs were involved besides alcohol.
No management. The contract they signed was pretty much slavery - no way to get out of it.
The "management" went the same way that it has gone since the beginning. They were manipulated, lied to , and turned against each other. The culprit then runs off with their money. It's been happening for thousand of years and whenever someone spots it, they convince you that you are imagining it.
@@Valkonnen and not a small amount of the poor management came from Fogerty himself who, despite his genuine creative genius, was not up to being the manager of everything else that was going on. He couldn't trust anyone. Not the fault of the other three band members.

Butt-hurt until the end.
I saw an interview where he said he was happy he could sing CCR songs again. He stopped singing CCR songs because he didn’t want to pay royalties to Fantasy Records. When the Fantasy Records owner died, the new owner was more sympathetic to John. I didn’t know the backstory before. It’s great everything turned out well for him
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing this info about John and CCR. Which CCR song appealed to you the most?
There was that famous tale about when Fogerty hopped onstage at a Taj Mahal show after being ribbed by Bob Dylan (who joined him along with George Harrison) that if he didn't play a CCR song, people would remember "Proud Mary" as a song by Tina Turner. The video mentions "Zanz Kant Danz", which had to be redone as "Vanz Kant Danz" after Zaentz sued, although "Mr. Greed" remained untouched.
John Fogerty sued Clarke and The Hollies, and they settled out of court for Long Cool Woman in a black dress. So for a guy who cries about being sued for Old Man down the Road he sure had no Qualms about suing other musicians...

many greats are ruthless about their art, but Fogerty was a Statue of Liberty-sized jerk about it. he literally told the RRHoF committee that he would not attend the award ceremony if any of the other members of CCR were there, his brother Tom not being a problem because he was dead (not having received a kind word from John in decades).

An argument can easily be made that he was the best ever, because he never wrote a bad song. "For his time." His songs are timeless, and he's more than just a writer. His vibrato and melodies are off-the-charts astonishing!

I've long wondered if he has ever sat down with Dennis DeYoung of Styx to compare notes.

(e.g.) The Doors SHARED their writing AND publishing equally "Music by the Doors" (except for "Soft Parade") .
You tell me.
and PS ... if John Fogerty DID share WRITING and publishing dollars (the ones left after Zaentz took his share) with the rest of Credence
then please accept my apology.

My favorite song is Long as I to see the light ❤
It’s sad money disagreements cost us some great albums if they would have stayed together
Neil Young got sued for not sounding like himself and Fogerty got sued for sounding like himself..You can't win

He has made 100 times more money than the other few guys in Creedence and he doesn't want them to make a dime😮

Really, other than being the rhythm section, what did they contribute?
He was justified in his position. He’s the only person to ever get sued for plagiarizing himself.
Wrong.. John shared his song writing royalties with the other 3 up til 1969, despite them not contributing one note to the process, so they became wealthy as a result of his generosity, and yet.. the 3 of them still screwed him over and sided with the record company that shafted him.. so id suggest that it pays to deal with the facts..
Well and they went ahead and called there new watered down band creedence clearwater recycled

CCR "Hot Stuff" Greatest Hits changed my life in 1997.
John where do you get your hair plugs and dye from?
However, I often wonder why the others turned against John en masse
Funny how it was three against one

He wrote a new album and was sued by CCR because it sounded too much like HE wrote it. Fook those guys.
Attempting to equate band members of the Beatles to members of CCR is laughable. All of the Beatle members were successful beyond the band's demise...what the heck did CCR members ever accomplish without Fogerty? I rest my case lol...
This is like ringo and mal evans taking over the beatles! Fogerty is CCR! John didn’t even need these guys! Glad he’s back!!
