The problem is, the part of society that you absolutely don't want owning these dogs are the ones that own them.

Bingo!! They shouldn't be allowed to own any breed of dog. Don't care how that sounds to be quite honest.

@@Dienekes678 Any dog has the potential to seriously harm someone. I read today of a young boy in Limerick who was in a park with his father. He went over to pet a little terrier and the dog viciously attacked him; he went to A&E but the face was so bad that stitches weren't an option and he needed surgery.
Dangerous breed or not, one of the biggest problems is people simply not training their dogs and allowing the dogs to act as their own alpha. Dogs need a pack structure, you have to be the alpha. Otherwise this kind of thing happens. But then you do have breeds like the Bully that were bred for a very specific purpose, and it's very difficult to control that nature.
I love dogs, but I think Bullies should be banned. How many attacks have there been by them here and in the UK?

Unless you can show that you can physically handle such a dangerous animal - have a test to prove that, you should not own these dogs. This breed should be monitored by breeders, owner should literally do a course to understand what can happen if these animals are not trained properly.

I've seen a guy one day north dublin with a American xxl bully. The size of it was unreal. Id say about 4 feet long and as wide as a large grown man, 3 feet tall and muscles on it like a bodybuilder about to go on stage. Dog was behaved and no issues but if that dog wanted to really go the guy hold it wouldnt stand a chance to control it. Probably need 3-4 grown men to hold it back I'm not joking.

How about Ireland introduces a reoccurring competency/behaviour check on the restricted dogs and their holders (in German Hundeführerschein). This is practice in Germany for decades. The behaviour of the dog in different scenarios and the holders competency to care for and the handling/control of the dog. If the dog is aggressive or the holder and/or dog don't successfully complete the checks, then the holder is not allowed to have a listed dog. As simple as. I do not know exactly what the checks are as I never had a restricted dog, but I think that those checks do make sense.

Because specific breeds are more used for security and protect. Take your German Shepherds, Rottweiler, Pitbull etc. They are better for this job, and thus these very specific breeds are the most common in these roles. You're not gonna use a Dachshund or Chow Chow to guard your home.
And because these breeds are used in areas where violence is a factor, obviously they'd have a higher association with general human attacks and damage. Because it's literally a major factor of their breed. Greyhounds are used in racing, so you're not surprised to see the list of racing champions and find a bunch of them are greyhounds.

I adore dogs. I have all my life. And i can say some dog breeds are clearly more aggressive and dangerous than others. We always knew that breeding different dogs together would produce dogs will certain traits. Some dogs are far more capable of aggression than others. That said, i also genuinely believe that "every dog has its first bite." It seems usually to be in old age. There are reasons, like the sad fact they cant tell us they are in pain. So you can get to a point where a dog may seem just docile with age, but could in fact be in pain from something as simple as a tooth, and this will affect their self control. Animals are animals. We, their owners, are responsible for anything they do to other humans or animals. Simple as that.

Its all about what you teach your dog and how you teach your dog. I agree, this breed is not for novices, people dont do theyre research, then this happen and its the dogs fault..... it is not fair. Its not the dogs that are the problem, it's the owners... no dogs are born aggressive. it's all down to the stupid owners who should not have them.

Yes, it should be banned. Unless the owners are prepared to serve prison sentences for the crimes their dogs committed.

Most people when they see any any kind of bull type dog they all think "is that an XL bully" the amount of videos you see of people asking that make me laugh . Its like when people see a dog that has the face of a lab and think its all the same. I saw someone once think a Frenchie was a baby xl bully and freaked out 🤣
