  • Following up on his essay “Lessons from a Simple Fly,” newly published in Fly Fisherman and Trout & Salmon magazines, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard sits down in his living room to show how he combines just a few simple materials to tie the pheasant tail and partridge soft hackle. Whether you’ve been tying for years or you’re leaning over the vise for the first time, it’s a pattern that can change the way you think about what makes a truly effective fly.

Love the background on more than the fly itself, master craftsman sharing his insight and transferring his knowledge on what works for him…old school on just how to be a regular guy (person) no nonsense or glitzy flash…just showing you a great all round pattern that will catch fish.

I could just listen to Yvon in the background while I work all day. He's like the cool grandpa every kid wanted growing up. Thanks for everything you do!

I distinctly remember discovering your wonderful outdoor clothing back in the 70’s. Very light , the most comfortable. It changed the joy of life for me. Up the elevations full pack and gear sweating like wet, remove a layer or two, shake vigorously back to dry in moments. The very best gear hands down. Yes, I love your fine video

I was watching an interview of Yvon on "Ireland on the Fly" where he discussed a pheasant tail and partridge fly tying book he is working on and was wondering when it will be available as well as will Yvon be doing a book signing tour as I would love to meet him. In the process of trying to find out more about his book I discovered this nice pattern that I will tie up tonight for some landlocked salmon fishing tomorrow.

Great fly, great video! Can't wait to try the method of tying the thorax last. Cool idea!

BTW, I did it, and it KILLED! Fish can't stay away from it. SH PT was always a go-to fly, but this version now rules that part of of my fly box!

This is a great video. I remember reading about your climbing in National Geo when I was in my teens. A new idea for me with the thorax tied in after the hackle, I'm sold.

Somebody said the more you know the less you need, and that’s what I’m working towards, just more simplicity… to me it’s the most satisfying method of fishing because it’s the simplest” -YC-
I remember as a kid we would go to the lake and not have anything, we would scavenge old line & eagle claws along the bank and tie them to sticks bare hooks. Somehow we’d come out of the woods w our bags full

This catches fish. I spend a lot more on my flies and it is for my sake and not the trouts. Simple life message preached by a simple fly tying video.
