In this song creep, where she says "what the hell am I doing here", I didn't notice the break in her voice. However, it works for emotional purposes. One of my favourite performances of last season.
I love having the artist there during the analysis!! I always wondered if the singers at that high of a level put as much self-analysis as what Sam describes in the other videos. This is so fascinating!! Love it
I find it interesting how Ada speaks in a similar way to Mitch Grassi. Lighter and in their bridge.
I definitely think there’s something about doing so which gives them the ability to thin out on top to access their high notes with as much clarity and ease as they do

I think it helps them mix as they are essentially practicing doing so every time they speak.
The way I see mixing or the bridge is as an unstable configuration between true voice and falsetto.
Most basses and tenors speak in their chest voice and not a mix. I think speaking in a mix gives Mitch and Ada familiarity navigating the bridge and allows them to thin out high notes better than most other singers.
Ada Vox's vocal cords never developed as she aged (as per Ada on the show Queen of the universe) . So she has immature vocal cords which may allow her to access that range easier?
I love the conversation that him and Ada had. It was so constructive and eye opening to hear Ada speak of how she was feeling. I love it so much.

I was having the same thought while watching this video. Before, for me he was just very good at explaining singing skills, and I enjoyed that... Now I enjoy that and seeing him, he is indeed handsome. .
I think it’s because people who are passionate about what they do are attractive. He is not just good at what he does, he enjoys it too.

it’s so cool how comfortable ada seems to be while watching herself. that’s a very useful trait for any good singer to have. the best thing for any singer is seeing and hearing what they look and sound like while singing, even if they’re overly critical of themselves sometimes. it’s important to still be comfortable and proud watching.
I absolutely loved having the artist there during the analysis. Maybe it worked so well because she's also good at talking about the process but it was wonderful, I don't watch American Idol so thank you for introducing me to this incredible singer.

Wow, I never realized how technical singing is!
A lot of people don't realise how technical singing is. How much work and time and thought goes into every note that is sung, every breath taken, the shape of our mouths, what vowel sounds we use, etc. It's really a lot of work and that's why not everyone can really do it or do it well.
Me neither until I started watching his videos last year. As someone interested in Linguistics and languages, his attention to how sounds are made is very enlightening and educational.

When she sings at 11:30 it sounds like there's some vocal doubling or some other effect. Would have been nice to hear what her opinion of the show doing that to her voice was.

The show didn't put any effects on her voice. That's a natural effect because it was right on her bridge.

YES! I was hoping for this! Even posted it to Ada's Facebook page months ago yay! Gurl, cut out all foods with added sodium eat a bunch of vegetables preferably raw - and you won't need to hydrate nearly as much for a day or two before performances and day of. :)
This is interesting, because you're obviously talking about the physiology of sound production, but I think I followed most of it. The false falsetto got me; I would have called it head voice, even though it was in the front of the face, because it was still in the dome of the palate, not up in the sinuses. Back when I was singing (in school, not for reals) I never developed that separation; I could stay out of the nasal voice, but my transition from chest to head and back was "just do the best you can, honey." I didn't have a whole lot of crossover, which I think is what you're calling "mix," where the same tone can come up from the chest or in from the head, whichever, whatever carries you where you need to go....
