@tallusbateman8392 ghost typing does not, and i repeat, does not block explosion! The opponent will still use it, your pokemon simply won't be harmed! Idk how so many people think the ai just wouldn't use explosion. It's been like this since generations. Gholdengo against memento is great, personally i like using my Chandelure that knows memento, curse and imprison to block two ugly moves at once, then chip away with night shade. Incredibly useful video, thank you! Another way to learn Spore: Sneak up on a Ditto (catch it off-guard) while leading with a pokemon that can set up Electric Terrain turn 1 to not fall asleep. Ditto won't use Transform til next turn if caught off guard. Immediately Switch to a Pokemon that knows only Spore and allow Ditto to transform. Then switch to Smeargle and sketch without falling asleep 👍🏼
This is so smart, using another smeargle to sketch a move from something you own that you want to transfer. It seems so obvious but I hadn't realized it. Edit; you can use the same smeargle for all 4 moves. Wild smeargle unlearn what sketch taught them and reteach themselves sketch outside of battle.
The other way to do it is double battles in the league club room (if you already defeated all the duo battle trainers in the wild) since you can fight them without limit as soon as you reset the league club room. (this option is harder obviously since they have lvl 70-80 pokemon, but hey, if you are desperate)
For Taunt, you dont need to do a boubles battle 1. Give a Mental Herb to your Smeargle 2. Battle a Smeargle with your taunt pokemon, use taunt on it(use it two more times and on the third use a potion). 3. Switch out to your Smeargle, it will be taunted but the white herb well cure this. 4. Use Sketch All set.
Thanks, this advice really helped me out since I battled all the Terrarium trainers already. But it was specifically a Mental herb, not a White Herb that cures taunt. Understandable though.
But the thing is… if you taunt the wild smearlge it won’t be able to sketch lol The way that I worked around this is having a mon trick a mental herb on it before using taunt. But if you use trick, it’ll sketch trick. So you need to put it to sleep before. So you need a Mon with: sleep move, trick, taunt

@@SomeWhereInNevada. It's not just because of the color. I can not tell how many times i've overseen a Shiny, because it was not in your sight. For your consideration, I suggest adding a Clefable or Reuniclus with Magic Guard ability and Skill Swap to the stable of catching support. The Magic Guard ability will prevent any and all recoil or extra damage caused by the opponents moves, weather damage, etc. Clefable and Reuniclus can’t learn any good helper moves though so that’s why Skill Swap is key - you can give the target Pokémon the ability and then swap to a more useful Pokémon Golduck is great for a similar reason as it can skill swap Damp but it also gets Soak, Taunt, & Yawn. For Minior which can’t be skill-swapped, the only 100% safe catcher I can come up with is Smeargle with Ghost tera, false swipe, spore, imprison, and explosion. Imprison to stop explosion, ghost tera to prevent recoil.
I personally find Ceruledge to be one of the best shiny hunter, it's ghost typing helps with most recoil moves that are often normal or fighting, and its flash fire ability also saves from flare blitz too, and sword dance to false swipe harder if need be. critical captures have been pretty frequent, so I'm personally finding less of a need for status moves personally
Good video! Another alternative if you're worried about recoil moves that aren't normal like flare blitz or head charge is to put heal pulse on your smeargle. It can be a good alternative if the pokemon you're hunting doesn't need soak or taunt. I'd also say that if you have an ability patch handy, moody can really help with survivability and damage in the long run
Or you can use a skill swap clefable and then switch. That way is more reliable. It wouldnt really work only in mons like Minior but just use a ghost type instead
Who needs damp? Go Imprison, Spore, FS, Explosion on a Smeargle! (To give explosion you need golem and golduck (damp) t1 in a double, attempt an explosion, t2 swap golduck into the smeargle, t3 sketch, t4 profit Th golduck part is not needed with Imprison learning)
I use flash fire Ceruledge since he can’t be touched by moves like flare blitz, take down, and double-edge. Max attack EVs and choice band makes sure a single false swipe takes them to 1 hp unless they resist normal type. 👍🏻
also, you can rebattle the BB elite four if you already defeated the other npc's. you just have to keep talking to them in the club room and get through all the little talk events they have. it changes every day, so time skipping will speed it up. (note, they will offer you a trade before they start doing battles with you)
Skill Swap on Damp Golduck before before Smeargle comes in to defuse Exploders. Skill Swap on Magic Guard Clefable to prevent recoil. Tera-Normal on Smeargle for the damage boost unless you need immunity to a recoil move because they _also_ have an explosion move and you can't give them Damp and Magic Guard at the same time. Memento+Imprison on Smeargle to block Memento. Soak can be moved to Golduck. For Seedot who is a Grass type with Explosion *and* Memento put Taunt on Golduck. Taunt first turn to block Memento and buy time to Soak, Skill Swap and X Accuracy+Hypnosis to switch in Smeargle for the longer term Imprison solution. Probably want multiple Smeargle so you can have Tera-Normal for regular use and Tera-Ghost and Tera-Ground ready for recoil-blocking situations.
You can also use a pokemon with the desire moves (make sure to forget the other 3), fight a ditto (after it switches), and switch to Smeargle and use Sketch
If anyone doesn't have the DLC but gets a Smeargle then you can learn moves by having a wild ditto transform into a pokemon with the move you want sketched. Also you can delete all other moves except the one you want to sketch so the wild ditto always uses the move you want to learn. Got all 4 moves on my Smeargle in less than 5 or 10 minutes.
Honestly if you're using an outbreak to shiny hunt smergal, and do want sparkling/encounter power. The BB cafeteria sells a level 1 version of them for 150BP
Another way to do stuff, is using the wild ditto method, just make ditto transform into your own pokemon ( while having only the target move.) Then switch to Smeargle. Saves time and the hassle of the double battle 🎉
It be way easier just to use a ditto so it transform into a pokemon in your party that way you can make sure it has the only move you want sketch and don't need to worry about it outspeeding
I use nearly the same build, but with Minimize instead of Taunt, and Moody as the ability. It’s to maximize the chances of Smeargle surviving the encounter. The evasion might also come in clutch against recoil moves or status moves with accuracy checks.
Before Indigo Disk I was using Shiftry with False Swipe//Imprison//Explosion//Take Down for catching pokemon who can explode/take down. I should look into some of the new options.
I personally have the same exact build minus taunt, I replaced that with Super Fang. A great partnet for the Smeargle is a Cloud Nine Golduck, it also can learn soak while shutting down the opponent's ability and also making them immune to weather conditions (such as sandstorm). This Golduck was my saving grace while I was catching Moltres is Asado Desert.
I’m pretty sure it’s just one of the stores in Paldea. I want to say Cascarafa maybe? But there’s only like 3 cities you can buy them from tho. So if it’s not there check Lavencia or Mesagoza. I bought it forever ago so I don’t quite remember but hopefully that helps lol
My smeargle: - false swipe - trick (with ring target to hit ghosts with false swipe) - spore - thunder wave Tera: Normal to boost false swipe Technician ability
Remove TRICK and put SOAK (turns your opponent into a Water-Type). After using SOAK, you can use SPORE on Grass-Type Pokémon and FALSE SWIPE on Ghost-Type Pokémon. Swap THUNDER WAVE and put MEAN LOOK to prevent possible escapes (like Teleport, Roar, etc.). Then replace the RING TARGET item with QUICK CLAW (to gain priority in critical situations). Best Smeargle for general captures: Move 1: Mean Look Move 2: Soak Move 3: Spore Move 4: False Swipe Hold Item: Quick Claw Ability: Technician Nature: Jolly (+Speed / -Sp. Atk)
i made a tiktok with a similar one i did however go spore, false swipe, entrainment, soak with terra ghost. will allow you to deal with all Pokémon without issues in most cases.
I prefer using a Gallade with False Swipe, Hypnosis and Trick, holding a Ring Target. Works against nearly everything! It also gets Taunt, but I prefer Psycho Cut to deal with unwanted mons.
Yea, I can try and get a short video together in the next day or so. But it’s basically using 2 switches and games and using the union circle so your main account never uses its herba mystica.
I run coil and ruination over false swipe with left overs but another move that can be good is ability changing over for overcoat and other users who can't be put to sleep and I always have moody as getting stats is good for longer battles
My preferred Smeargle build is Jolly, 252 speed, 252 HP, 4 attack, Moody, False Swipe, Thunder Wave, Cosmic Power, and Soak. Tera is mostly normal, but depending on the pokemon it can be either ghost for stopping recoil moves or even fairy to stop pokemon from using Outrage so they don't get confused. I prefer paralysis over sleep since pokemon can't cure themselves of it so means less times having to use spore to keep them asleep.
Smeargle is pretty meh nowdays, while it is nice to have soak or block to go for flutter mane shinny hunts with false swipe, at lvl 100 Breelom has like 392 attak fully trained while smeargle is at like.... 190. Aweful trash stats. Only get smeargle if you need to shinny hunt ghost or grass pokemon, otherwise, not worth at all. The one exception would be for example, when we had the Eevee event all over the place and wanted to capture it in a special ball, if you false swipe a lvl 50+ eevee it could just take down and die, so now that we have smeargle we could of used Imprision + Take down to block the wild eevee from auto defeating and then freely spore (same thing for auto damage inflicters) or even capture a very tough hih defense steel type by changing its type to water. All of the above very niche cases tha are probably not worth your time.
There have been many bugs with auto battle. My Ceruledge would sometimes stand beside me while Im spamming R to get her to attack. Sometimes she would fall asleep. I would have to recall her to the pokeba and send her back out again just to get her to fight. Sometimes she just stands there. I could use a Smeargle but I feel like the same peoblem will happen.
This is really smart. But i feel like its unecessary. I’ve caught over 400 shinys and the only ones that have given me real trouble has been those with Self Destruct which this build doesn’t help with. Still a great idea.
I prefer Breloom, too. Mine additionally knows Swords Dance for bulkier targets, and more importantly, Substitute. Sub will prevent moves like Memento and Pain Split. Though, I did need a Soaker with Taunt (Golduck), once my shiny Litwick was Soaked, I immediately swap to Breloom and Spore then Substitute.
Honestly I prefer mew. Smeargle's stats are just too low and especially in the terrarium you need some stats. While mew can't learn any move it can learn a MASSIVE amount and relearn any of them. While Smeargle is more versatile it kinda ends up stuck with 1 move set where as Mew its as simple as going into the relearn page. Plus its got better base stats. Soak is an issue but its as simple as getting a very weak pokemon and giving it the quick claw. If all goes well it mives first uses soak gets KOed and you switch in free no wasted moves. If not reset to your save point.
I named one Isabelle bc my brother loves Animal Crossing. Then I was trying to think of a name for the one for my friend, and I just was like “You feel like a Gorf” 😂
Taunt isntaead fo hyonosis becaue saoaktturns graas tyoes to water types is a great idea. Gotta train up my shiny smeargle and say goodbye to my shiny breloom.
I have both versions of the game and a switch lite. I just do a union circle using both games and then use all the herba/ expensive ingredients on my second save. My main file eats the sandwich and gets the buff, then I close my second game without saving, so when i boot my game back up, all my stuff is intact.
If you have access to a second save file, whether you are a nerd like me who has maxed out a save on each version. Or just have a friend/ sibling with their own switch and save file. All you need to do is a union circle picnic and use the Herba Mystica on the “second switch” and after your main file eats it and gets the buff. Just close the secondary one without saving. You get any boost you want without ever using any herbs
Hypnosis just misses too much for me, and I just prefer sleep over para for the increased catch rate. It doesn’t make a huge difference generally. But when I’m catching a cool shiny in a beast ball or something else with low odds. I’ll take any % increase in catch rate, the less resetting for me the better
That's just not something I've been exposed to, and the stuff I do works for me. Ill definitely have to check it out and see if that's a process id switch to 👍
I got my shiny smeargle right when plopped down at my first outbreak. Thanks shiny charm 😁 Also, i used this set up for my smeargle: Ruination Thunder Wave Spore False Swipe I did ruination for ghost/resist types. However i didnt think about taunt so i may just get rid of false swipe for it.
Ayo! Does soak cause the net ball to have a better chance on opposing Pokémon? I caught Articuno too easily. I am glad this video blew up for you. I wish you continued success.
Since the point of hunting something shiny is to pass it down to another game my shiny hunter technically doesn't need to be passed down to another game would it be such a crime to gen just this pokemon... Provided of course I don't trade it to anyone

Oh wow Im not the only one that appears two shiny in less then one minute and i can tell that that is the same reaction that I did really great video
My shiny smeargle was a random shiny find. Had to save then encounter. Took 5 encounters with it cuz he'd struggle. Lol 😅
Golduck has the ability Cloud Nine, Skill Swap and Soak
Friendship ended with Breloom. Now smeargle is my best friend.
We still love our Brelooms out here
I'll put my move set for it. Because why not I put trick with focus Sash. Floral healing. Hypnosis. And sheer cold.
Hey where'd you get that spooky tablecloth?
I’m pretty sure it’s just one of the stores in Paldea. I want to say Cascarafa maybe? But there’s only like 3 cities you can buy them from tho. So if it’s not there check Lavencia or Mesagoza. I bought it forever ago so I don’t quite remember but hopefully that helps lol
Hello!! I have the same tablecloth!! I'm at least 90% sure I picked it up in Levincia's Picnic Knacks!
@@thetoyboxgeneral Thank you for saving them from a wild goose chase and sadness 😂
do u remember what ingredients u used for the humongo sandwich??
My smeargle:
- false swipe
- trick (with ring target to hit ghosts with false swipe)
- spore
- thunder wave
Tera: Normal to boost false swipe
Technician ability
Remove TRICK and put SOAK (turns your opponent into a Water-Type).
After using SOAK, you can use SPORE on Grass-Type Pokémon and FALSE SWIPE on Ghost-Type Pokémon.
Swap THUNDER WAVE and put MEAN LOOK to prevent possible escapes (like Teleport, Roar, etc.).
Then replace the RING TARGET item with QUICK CLAW (to gain priority in critical situations).
Best Smeargle for general captures:
Move 1: Mean Look
Move 2: Soak
Move 3: Spore
Move 4: False Swipe
Hold Item: Quick Claw
Ability: Technician
Nature: Jolly (+Speed / -Sp. Atk)
i made a tiktok with a similar one i did however go spore, false swipe, entrainment, soak with terra ghost. will allow you to deal with all Pokémon without issues in most cases.
i found a shiny smeargle but accidentally fainted it because i didnt know pokemon with the synchronize machine thing could kill shinies
this was so helpful tysm i found a shiny smeargle and named it after my boyfriend and now he goes with me everywhere :)
You can also use ditto to learn moves
Really more like the best catcher than the best shiny hunter, but it looks cool and I might make it
Imprison + Self-Destruct / Explosion / Take Down, etc. is another option
I already did this strat a while ago for every move, except spore, that one i got from a tera breloom
I prefer using a Gallade with False Swipe, Hypnosis and Trick, holding a Ring Target. Works against nearly everything! It also gets Taunt, but I prefer Psycho Cut to deal with unwanted mons.
That definitely works, I just hate relying on hypnosis, and I don't even bother knocking out wild Pokémon unless I am EV training lol
@@gareyysenpaaiii fair which is why I mentioned it also learns taunt, psycho cut is just how I deal with the arena trappers
Are you going to do shiny necrozma photon geyser?
Breloom & Golduck are better. Damp is such a useful ability.
Both holding Leftovers.
Bredloom:
Ability: Technician
Tera: Normal
Spore
False Swipe
Drain Punch
Rest
Golduck:
Ability: Damp
Yawn
Soak
Skill Swap
Taunt
I just chuck an April ball first turn at whatever shiny o want and if it’s not a crit catch I just reset 😂
Your Pokemon won’t knock out a shiny, but it can de-spawn f it uses teleport, roar, and explosion when encountered
Can you explain the infinite herba?
Yea, I can try and get a short video together in the next day or so. But it’s basically using 2 switches and games and using the union circle so your main account never uses its herba mystica.
Breloom is easier and it can use spore, stun spore and false swipe without those extra steps.
I run coil and ruination over false swipe with left overs but another move that can be good is ability changing over for overcoat and other users who can't be put to sleep and I always have moody as getting stats is good for longer battles
I have a non shiny smeargle and a shiny smeargle with different moves 😅
persian. breloom, gallade, venasaur and now smeargle. those are my shiny hunters.
Dang was about to ask someone if they wanted to shiny hunt smeargle but got him with the thorny mark on top of it
Hi so cool video I want to get into shiny hunting but kinda don’t know what I am doing any tips?
How does beating 60 Smeargle beforehand affect anything? I thought that only increased Shiny odds in Gen 8?
Unless I misunderstood Outbreaks for over a year, I thought you had to knock out 60 for increased odds. If not then whoops lol
@@gareyysenpaaiii It's possible that you're right and I'm wrong, but this is seriously the first time I've heard of something like this in Gen 9.
I got 3 with 1 sparkle level 3 in the same area i caught shiny litten with 0 outbreaks
Doesent help when it despawns after Using Sync machine from too far away from your character.
It took me two and a half hours but Gobstopper the Shiny Smeargle in a Dream Ball has joined the team
Edit: I caught another one
…Time to put that Shiny Smeargle I got traded years back to use!
Why disable on trev tho ?
I caught two of em as well a male and female. Scarlet and rouge lmfao. One was when I was looking for a treecko.amd the other was an out break of em
This is really smart. But i feel like its unecessary. I’ve caught over 400 shinys and the only ones that have given me real trouble has been those with Self Destruct which this build doesn’t help with. Still a great idea.
I use a breloom with false swipe and spore. Works perfectly
I use a team of Breelom, Golduck, Palossand and Grimmsnarl. It's easier to shiny hunt with them. Just wished Jellicent was in the game.
Coulda made the humungo shiny sandwich with one chorizo and 2 spicy herbs only.
Another option is to have a pokemon learn only one move and then encounter a ditto
I use dittos to teach smeargle moves
I'm having a weird image of volunteer Ditto teaching at a community center for underprivileged Smeargle
welp guess I know what im doing with my chain master smeargle from sun and moon
Honestly I prefer mew. Smeargle's stats are just too low and especially in the terrarium you need some stats. While mew can't learn any move it can learn a MASSIVE amount and relearn any of them. While Smeargle is more versatile it kinda ends up stuck with 1 move set where as Mew its as simple as going into the relearn page. Plus its got better base stats. Soak is an issue but its as simple as getting a very weak pokemon and giving it the quick claw. If all goes well it mives first uses soak gets KOed and you switch in free no wasted moves. If not reset to your save point.
How do we both have a pokemon called Gorf. Thats so random lol
How do you have unlimited herba mystica?
I have both versions of the game and a switch lite. I just do a union circle using both games and then use all the herba/ expensive ingredients on my second save. My main file eats the sandwich and gets the buff, then I close my second game without saving, so when i boot my game back up, all my stuff is intact.
Auto battles don’t knock out shinies. It’s how i got over 2 dozen hard to spot shinies
Auto battles don’t, but when you control your Pokémon with the syncro machine, you can knock them out
Wait... what do you mean infinite herba with 2 switches
SCOTLAND FOREVERRR
What evs should i add to it
I do Attack and HP, but Attack and speed works too
Thank you!
I'd figure twave or hypnosis not spore
Hypnosis just misses too much for me, and I just prefer sleep over para for the increased catch rate. It doesn’t make a huge difference generally. But when I’m catching a cool shiny in a beast ball or something else with low odds. I’ll take any % increase in catch rate, the less resetting for me the better
why not use the 0 ingredient sandwiches instead?
That's just not something I've been exposed to, and the stuff I do works for me. Ill definitely have to check it out and see if that's a process id switch to 👍
I got my shiny smeargle right when plopped down at my first outbreak. Thanks shiny charm 😁
Also, i used this set up for my smeargle:
Ruination
Thunder Wave
Spore
False Swipe
I did ruination for ghost/resist types. However i didnt think about taunt so i may just get rid of false swipe for it.
Ayo! Does soak cause the net ball to have a better chance on opposing Pokémon? I caught Articuno too easily.
I am glad this video blew up for you. I wish you continued success.
Im not 100% sure on that. It feels like suck a strange interaction that I could see it go either way lol.
Thanks for the support!
thx a lot
Haven't even finished 2nd dlc been playing fire red and emerald on the analouge. More fun to me, also shiny locking the main pokemon I want = no fun.
Learn spore by gave smeargle safety goggles
Kill 60 then sandwich?
You can definitely do a sandwich before the 60, I just like doing it separately so I don’t use the union circle as often lol
Since the point of hunting something shiny is to pass it down to another game my shiny hunter technically doesn't need to be passed down to another game would it be such a crime to gen just this pokemon... Provided of course I don't trade it to anyone
I just came across a shiny smeargle in my first hour or so of the game.
Quickballs.
Are ugly IMO :/
On mine, I run:
- Spore
- False Swipe
- Soak
- Gastro Acid
